OMFG. Decades ago Eric S Raymond gave a talk at my college, and he also unironically said that if we wanted to make money and write software we should get a job at McDonalds. This was in the 1990s when Bill Gates was on the news for being the richest person in the planet. Dude single-handedly turned off the entire CS class from OSS. I'd forgotten all about that talk XD

It did went down from that point in time. Yes. However we got 2000% more efficient. But I think only 30% more paid. Minus inflation, you get most likely a negative growth in salary vs 1980 ;P

I like "rewrite to rust" phrase. In normal company rewriting and refactoring already working and decent code just to show up is a good way to get fired - it's bad in many levels: waste of time that could be spend on wanted new features, and disrespect for work done by others rather then educating them. Then there is some free software that needs optimization and refactoring, but it's nearly dead and no one wants to touch 25 year old core part which works or original code is academic "reference implementation" with way too many memory (de)allocations which is relatively clean, but slow and no one dares to touch it.

I am a junior engineer and I think this way. I didn't know there are others who also have this kind of a vision, but also end-up destroying their finances by not executing it in a sustainable way. Fortunately, I haven't started to execute my plan. It's a hard truth to accept that OSS isn't it what used to be. It just makes me sad about the modern day software/tech world.

I think he's criticizing employees in startups that exploit people, not OSS. There are lots of things that you do without being paid because you enjoy doing it. Some people are paid to watch movies (movie critics), but you don't expect to be paid when you watch one. You do it because you enjoy doing it, and it doesn't matter if other people are doing it for a living. It's the same for OSS. You can code because you enjoy doing it, even if other people are doing it for a living. It's just as fine as watching movies without getting paid. As long as you are not somebody's slave.
