vim works all the time, 3 plugins is enough to do most of my development - vinegar, matchit, buufexplorer, plus redirect compiler outupt to the text file and use gF to navigate to error lines, plus `egrep -lre *` for searching. Neovim used to suck, but it's getting gradually better and better, language server providers just work out of the box with minimal configuration.

I am a junior engineer and I think this way. I didn't know there are others who also have this kind of a vision, but also end-up destroying their finances by not executing it in a sustainable way. Fortunately, I haven't started to execute my plan. It's a hard truth to accept that OSS isn't it what used to be. It just makes me sad about the modern day software/tech world.

You go through all of this and then when you start you have to ... do a few CMS updates and sit in meetings about a project that has been being planned for months but there is "no budget" to actually do it. There is only budget for the meetings to "plan" it. Which I'm pretty sure that is why the interviews are so in depth. Because its the only times devs feel like they are important. That, and they were never picked in gym class so they have to take it out on someone.

Wot no "representative testing"? "If you don't plan to sell your company you don't use children's magic like micro-services" boom... Micro-services don't mean your architecture loosely coupled...they just punish you when it isn't... and if you think it does, then it definitely won't be, and you will be punished. If you are aren't planning on having at least ten servers and have a massive budget then don't use a technology with a 10X comms overhead. Microservices are not "horizontally scaling" by default - unless you have an infinitely fast network. They are also not the only way to horizontally scale. Truly asynchronous processes with queues will clash with any ACID requirements in ways you will never comprehend. Message queuing systems only get you over spikes, they don't increase capacity... in fact they reduce it (Oh, and they cost money). After 35 years you have had a lot of zeitgeist kicked out of you, and a lot of pedentary gets baked in - today's special explanation to a relatively recently appointed senior dev "the reference implementation is not the specification - it is informative not normative - you are suggesting we make assumptions that mean 'backwards compatible' will not necessarily apply to our code".

You know how C++ devs just "code it all themselves", yeah is is why. I wrote an XML encoder and decoder in 1 page each. Xerces was 50 times the size of my 50,000 line codebase. I don't even want to know what it's doing I'm not.

This is exactly what is required in a regulated domain like healthcare and medical device software: the V model, V&V, tonnes of testing, design control and everything!
