Thanks for posting this. The sincerity with which she explained the situation of cinema and cinema advertising, her language, her expression, her entire persona or should I say aura, all of it moved me greatly and made me miserable again that she passed away so early. I think half of my misery was thinking about the mostly utterly superficial interviews of film personalities( barring a few actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Sanjay Mishra, Irrfan Khan ) today with neither good language nor depth of thoughts. Well, at least we have these old interviews to look at. Thanks for that!

Undoubtedly one of the finest actors India has ever produced. Smita Patil along with Shabana Azmi redefined the perception of women during the parallel cinema movement. This interview says a lot about the time & the people of India back then. We weren't a liberal economy back then. We didn't have multi channel tv networks. We didn't have internet or social media. For the rest of the world india opened only in 1990s. But the discourses on our TV were more open than what they are today with plethora of 24x7 news channels. The quality and nuances which a lone doordarshan was able to strike is proving impossible for all multitude of private broadcasters of the day put together. The openess in our society & the willingness to discuss realities albeit uncomfortable was what characterized post independence india till the 1990s. The intellectual moorings of debates of DD are unmatched today. Unfortunately DD is regressing from its progressive, ahead of its time approach to toe the line of the government & acting almost as a state media house of China or north korea. The space of open ended discussions on topics that actually matter in the lives of Indians indiscriminately has been hijacked by socio-religious Rhetoric funded by corporates & aimed at creating an alternative narrative of majority vs minority communities.
