I have to say, whoever builds those trailers is a huge fan of Henry Ford; clearly, you can have any colour you want as long as it's black. I have a mate with a Hot Pink trailer - he says it's a security feature. No one would ever steal it, because who'd wanna be seen towing a trailer that colour...?😂👍🇦🇺

Just need 4 chain rings in the center. Then stack 4x4 lumber and chain it in place. We used that as a bulk head to keep steel bars from sliding on a semi.

Only thing I can say right now about trailers is that you'd ideally want one where the floor is one continuous piece of metal and no welds, because welds breaks. And: we have bad weather and salt here in germany too, and most trailers you see are galvanized unless its like a big semi truck.

I agree with a lot of the comments, low trailers are very low but make loading a tractor easier and safer but in your case with unloading wood, I bet you'll have to maybe move a few more feet forward verses a taller deck over trailer when unloading wood. I'd just go with a 14ft with the taller sides and head rack. Our dump trailer is 16x7 and I can loosely throw about 5 face cords in it with no side boards and slightly mounded, hope this helps.

Here's my two cents. I think the deck over units are more suited for dumping cord wood. With the low pro you'll have to run out the load more when you're dumping. But the low pro is better for loading your tractor. There's a lot to consider when trailer shopping. I would have a hard time deciding if I was in your shoes. Good luck chris. I'll be interested in seeing your trailer upgrade when you pull the trigger on it.

Low profile trailers suck for firewood delivery I converted mine from underslung to over-slung suspension. A 7x14 with 4ft tall sides will hold 6 face cords loosely thrown in. It will be heavy and a half ton will pull it but you’ll get tired of it very fast

6x3x14 is 252 cubic feet. For 16" wood 180 cubic feet is considered a unstacked cord buy a weight and measure department. 252 cf would give 4 1/3 cord sections in the trailer. Make 2x6 removable walls for each part of the trailer. And a dump setup for the pickup would be a good idea, making your current bed dump not a replacement. Just ideas 0.01c

You have a tractor cant you stack wood on a pallet and load it to your truck to save you a step or two of stacking. You can use plastic wrap to wrap the pallet and keep it from falling over. Just curios Ive seen other people use other types of containers to carry firewood.
@InTheWoodyard

You would need to stack it on the pallet perfectly and wrapping it would not allow it to dry. Using the tractor on my end would work but then unloading at the customers???

From my experience….. like have a 14x7 trailer… great all around for most tasks. One thing I wish is that the deck was higher…. When dumping the low deck restricts wood from dumping out so you have to pull forward quite a bit to empty the trailer….. not a huge issue, but most customers want their wood in a pile, and not covering their entire driveway. Another thing I would look for is flat folding gates….. some tight driveways make it impossible to dump cause of the doors. Finally, while my trailer is from a reputable manufacturer, the overall quality leaves much to desire… Sorry, one more thought for your consideration…. Get something that will allow you to tow your tractor if needed. 7x14 14k trailer will do it

Well Chris it's a catch 22 if you go up much in size in a dump trailer then you should be pulling it with a 3/4 ton truck and if you want to be able to transport your tractor your really going to need at least a 7x14 14,000 gvwr dump trailer. That's what I use for my kabobs L47 which is about the size of your tractor.. But like you said bigger trailer bigger truck, and more money it will cost you .

We have a very large PJ dealer down here in Edgerton. The only complaint they have about them is the paint tends to fail pretty fast, it peels off pretty quick. I have a 7x18 Bwise trailer and the whole thing was powder coated. I have used it to haul everything including bulk road salt to sites and the paint is holding up great for being 5 years old. Just something to consider.

There's a reason why many trailers are rated at 9,990 pounds. In Wisconsin, 26,000 pound vehicle/combined weight needs a Class B CDL, and if the trailer/towed vehicle has a weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more you need a class B CDL. Even if you get a 14,000 pound rated trailer and never load it up over a combined trailer/cargo weight of 10,000 pounds you must have a class B CDL. Basically it doesn't matter what your truck and trailer GCWR is if the trailer is rated at 10,000 pounds or more when it comes to Class B CDL requirements.

I build trailers- make sure you take the one you like out for a test drive before you buy. Most people dont realize how heavy those dump trailers are and that their bad ass Ford wont tow it loaded. I built myself a 4x4x8 foot cord hauling trailer with fold down sides, not a dump but its a measured cord so I dont lose and the customer gets an exact cord- what they paid for. Two cords at a time and the trailer your looking at around 10,000lbs or more you will be towing around. Light loads save the truck, gas and trailers are cheap compared to saving a trip. My 5x10.5 7k dump trailer weighs 1800lbs- lightest heavy duty dump around.

I had two pjs and the only thing I would say negative is the paint sucks and even with washing they rust. I bought a midsota and it’s got a real paint job and it is a better built trailer especially the hinge system on the rear pivot. 14 foot trailer weighs about 4200 and a 16 is 4700. Not sure if you have a midsota dealer but we’ll worth checking it out. Also the scissors ram is the best bet in my opinion.

Chris, absolutely love the videos! Those are nice trailers and I'm sure the decision won't be easy. If I had a prosperous and growing business as yourself , I would be very inclined to get a 14' or even 16' and refurbish the old one for smaller loads. Good older model single axle dump trucks are everywhere if you search for them. Many are less than $10,000. I'm sure you're searching surrounding states for trailers. I started with a 10x5 very similar to yours that I borrowed from a friend. Then I bought a used 12x6 that I used for a bit and sold it and went in on a 14x7 with my son. The 14x7 is a monster compared to the other 2. You definitely need a 3/4 ton truck if you're going to use it to it's full potential. Something you'll find with the non-deckover trailers is they sit lower than the deckovers like yours. What happens with that is your pile is lower and has to be spread out more when you dump. Something to consider with some of the loads you deliver. you'll be at the end of the driveway in some places before all the wood is out..lol I didn't see any galvanized trailers on that lot. Painted ones don't last in my area (SW Ontario, Canada) either if you use them in the winter. Dave

Chris if I were you I would keep the trailer you have. It wouldn’t cost to much to fix it up and would be nice to have a smaller trailer. There are so many more trailer companies out there. The companies I like are Diamond C and BWise trailers. They are both made extremely well and built to last. The issue with getting a more heavy duty dump trailer that can haul your tractor is your Toyota is not going to cut it. You would need at least a 3/4 ton HD truck. The other option is when you need to move your tractor hire a company to move it for you. I still think you should get a truck that can legally tow your new dump trailer. Good luck

I once pulled a semi out of a ditch with an Oldsmobile. Easy does it, less acceleration than racing to the next light would be. Saved that poor guy a tow bill, maybe his job. Didn't hurt the car at all! Keep the trailer brakes healthy, your speed reasonable for weather and traffic, and your Toyota will do fine.- I like the PJ scissor hoist, but the other brand has the high up taillights. That was your reason not to back up, shorten your dump stream. Torsion axles are pretty nifty too. You can always keep building your sideboards higher for more capacity, as long as your GVWR is big enough. The taller front panel with those wonderful tarps is a new config to me. Sweet ! - Blast and paint the one you got, or not. You know all about the one you got. Some maint, it will last a loong time. More value to use than trade. - Say 'hey' to Tony. Bet he'd have some good ideas.

My personal experience with trailers I love my cam superline advantage 10k trailer. It’s plenty big for me and my operation. I have 18 inch sides on it for tossing in wood and it can still be tucked in a garage to store it it dumps pretty good to with it’s fairly steep tip angle. Two cord is what I’ve been loading mostly but I’m sure it would load a full cord of seasoned wood nicely. If your truck has the capability of hauling higher a 6x12 would probably be the way to go. I only have a 3.5 eco boost F150 with 11,000 gcvw so I don’t want to prematurely wear it out. That’s why I stay under the 10k load. Plus it hauls nicer not being as heavy.

For those bigger loads, instead of a dump trailer, have you looked into an older mason dump truck, would be more maneuverable and less wear and tear on your half ton truck. Yes they are more expensive but you can definitely get away with a bigger box on a mason dump than a 1/2 ton towable dump trailer

On the trailer size how often if you had a bigger trailer would you deliver more wood? Many of your deliveries seem to be a cord or less. The photo of the wood is a nice touch and also if they get home and nothing is there it may give you some credibility.

Given the price of trucks now, it may be a bad time to look at any trailer that requires a truck upgrade. In an effort to kick the can down the road, can your existing trailer have some repairs done that will keep it in service a bit longer? Renting or leasing a trailer so you can give it back when it's worn out? Tax issues going forward? So many variables. Keep on Chuckin!

Taking pictures and sharing them with the customers is a great way to confirm and document the delivery. I do the same with seasonal awning cover installation and removals. I looked at Moritz, Suretrac, PJ, and Diamond C trailers. Pros and cons in design features between each. Bought a 77” x 12’ MDT low profile Diamond C trailer rated at 9990 lbs gvwr with 7,000# axles, single post front 3 stage lift, I beam frame and cross members, self storing 10k drive on ramps, and baked on epoxy enamel paint system. Had to drive 4 hrs away to PA to locate dealer with sufficient inventory to compare brands side by side. Happy trailer hunting Chris.

I've had a dozen or so dump trailers for roofing and on some of the longer ones like 14' there is a bigger overhang in the back (axles further forward) so they tend to drag the load out further down the driveway. Not sure if they are all like that or not. I opt for a shorter one and put higher sides on them.

7.000 capacity total. trailer weighs about 2.000 lbs or more, With barely 5,000lbs capacity you are almost overloaded with a cord, dry weighs about 5000 lbs. You should be looking into a 10,000lb trailer. You may have to get a larger truck, to keep the wear down on it.

From my experience the low deck is too low.. wood always gets trapped under the back doors.. when this happens you pick up the back of the trailer usually causing damage to the back end... bigger is better.. remember 60 square feet for 1 loose facecord.. 300 is 5 face cords

11:42 that's the rim size. lol. Honestly its your money so do whatever you want obviously. BUT if you want a trailer you can put your tractor in, then you're gonna have to get the bigger trailers with the heavier axles and then your truck would probably either be on the limit to feeling in control or over weight (I could be wrong, I'm not sure of your tractor weight or truck towing capacity and all that stuff ) If you have to go that big and keep your current truck then I would really consider an aluminum trailer. Save trailer weight and get more load capacity, but those are also very expensive. I've had a few trailers on my day and i actually ended up building one so I could get exactly what I wanted. So, Yoda Chris. Question. I have mostly oak, all hardwood, that has been split and stacked for 2-3 years. What is the "dust" that shakes off the splits. Granted some may be from the actual dust blown on to the logs over the years. But, it seems like a lot. Could it be decaying bark? Or ? The wood itself is in excellent shape. It has been stored uncovered. Thank you, Master.
