Comsumate professionals. 5 regiments of foot guards make up the household division. Coldstream guards (English ) Grenadier Guards (English ) Scots guards (Scottish) Irish guards (Irish) Welsh guards (Welsh) Blues and Royals cavalry Life Guards (cavalry) All these regiments perform public duties and state ceremonies in and around London .However they are all professional soldiers some of the guards regiments dating back hundreds of years.

@ggarlick46
@ggarlick46 Жыл бұрын
@sandra huntington No the regiment was based at Coldstream. They were recruited from the towns in Northern England they passed on the march to London. Thats the tradition. Its not a Scottish regiment, nor has any Scottish traditions or music. "The origin of the Coldstream Guards lies in the English Civil War when Oliver Cromwell gave Colonel George Monck permission to form his own regiment as part of the New Model Army. Monck took men from the regiments of George Fenwick and Sir Arthur Haselrig, five companies each, and on 13 August 1650 formed Monck's Regiment of Foot. Less than two weeks later, this force took part in the Battle of Dunbar, at which the Roundheads defeated the forces of Charles Stuart. After Richard Cromwell's abdication, Monck gave his support to the Stuarts, and on 1 January 1660 he crossed the River Tweed into England at the village of Coldstream, from where he made a five-week march to London. He arrived in London on 2 February and helped in the Restoration of the monarchy." The regiment traditionally recruits from the north-east of England where it originated, and from the south west where Monck had lived. It can be distinguished on parade by red plumes on the right of the bearskins, the Garter star on the collar, and buttons spaced in twos as the second regiment of foot guards, a position they have never accepted as they are older than the Grenadier Guards, hence the motto Nulli Secundus or Second to None.

There wasn't much honour in what British and American soldiers did in Iraq, Libya Syria, and the rest, all over outright lies and false flag events. Remember that no weapons of mass destruction were ever found in Iraq despite Tony Blairs assurances to the British public that Iraq had them, but they still got invaded at high cost, not only to the Iraqis and their country, but also to the British and American troops who were killed or maimed for life when they invaded a sovereign country without cause.

@Andy Williams That is entirely my point, front line combat soldiers shouldn't be prancing about on horses dressed up like it is still the 18th century. Time to move on, the time of Kings and Queens are over. All these royal estates and palaces should be handed over to the National Trust to run. And if they want to carry on this charade, then they can employ ex-soldiers to do it for the tourists..

@@billbhein2949 The time of Kings and Queens is not over. There are 43 countries in the world which still have a monarchy. Statistically the countries with monarchies are happier and more stable than countries without monarchies. Those Royal Residents are among the most visited places in the world and generate a significant amount of income for the UK economy precisely because they are still fully working active Royal Palaces. It's not a charade. It's a fully working political institution and business and an extremely successful and profitable one.

@@billbhein2949 There are about 32.2 million taxpayers in the UK. The entire Royal Family and everything involving them cost each individual taxpayer just a minuscule £3.17 about in tax last year, about £102 million in total UK tax. In return, the Royal Family directly provided over £1.8 billion to the UK economy. An over 1664% return on the total UK tax contribution, plus numerous non-monetary benefits. For £1.8 billion in return and all the other massive good the Royal Family does, I don't think a minuscule £3.17 from each taxpayer last year is that bad. It's actually a massive bargain. To put it into context. The NHS costs each taxpayer about £6000 last year, about £216 billion in total UK tax. The Royal Familly is massively inexpensive in terms of tax. It's significantly cheaper in terms of tax per person than the Governments of most nations, such as the USA, Germany, France, etc. It's doesn't matter whichever way you try cut it. The UK is much more advantageous with the Royal Family than without it. As is the case for the vast majority of nations which still have a monarchy. The profit and benefits the Royal Family provide the UK as a significant public and private business far outweigh the cost and disadvantages.

Very disappointing: the Guardsman in the middle swung his arms bent. His arms should have been arrow straight. The Guardsman who opened the gate swung his arms straight but not up to the horizontal. That’s two sloppy mistakes from just four soldiers. Now, if you think I’m being petty, you’re right! These soldiers are not popping over the road to a chip shop, they are the King’s Guard, on duty! There are no excuses in the Guards Division, the only standard that matters is perfection. In my day, we’d have been on the mat for such sloppy drill.

And this is why the young are not interested in the views of grumpy owd pensioners. We no longer live in a world where perfection is standard, get into todays world and smile. Thankfully we don’t have to move coal from one area of a yard to another, paint the wall and floor and move the coal back because the paint is now dirty. We have grown up a little. These young people were an excellent example of what can be done with the youth of today. Look around you, walk into the city and observe, no amount of pointless old fashioned mind destroying discipline and childish pettiness will change todays youth street culture. Try a compliment, it might, just might make you and others around you feel good. Are you related to Alf Garnett by any chance?

@@andycapp8843 This is the King’s Bodyguard: good enough is not good enough. There has to be a pinnacle of perfection up to which others can aspire or admire. The first and third Guardsmen get it right, they are indeed a credit to their regiment. They are exactly what I would expect from a Guardsman, and they certainly don’t need a compliment from me. They know they’re the best. In contrast, the middle Guardsman is not pushing his wrist down, which would straighten his arm. It’s pretty much the first thing you learn on the drill square. Sure, it’s tougher than it looks to march smartly at a pace. (Try doing it at 150 paces a minute for quarter of an hour on your way to the guardroom!) Being a Guardsman isn’t easy, that’s the point! The mindset of a Guardsman is not to aspire to perfection, it is to start with perfection. You don’t get medals for turning up in this Brigade. If you wish to compliment mediocrity, where excellence is required, go ahead. I will continue to admonish it. As for your dismissal of today’s youth, I couldn’t disagree more. Everyone can aspire to excellence. The problem is not the young, it’s people like you who compliment mediocrity, encouraging them to sit on their laurels. Most young people are sponges who will suck up whatever they are given. Feed them mediocrity and that’s what they’ll become; feed them excellence and watch them bloom. It’s not about punishment, but enlightenment and actuation.

@@crashrr2993 The display by these young people deserves praise. The drill sergeant has done a great job and should be complimented. How easy it is to live with tunnel vision, where sitting on the fence where all that occupies the mind is to pick fault. We are in the 21st century and times have changed, essential to move with the times and not live in the past with it’s ridiculous routines and stupid, mindless discipline that broke the spirit of so many good men and women. Who is to say that one, maybe two of these soldiers were out for the first time; criticism serves little purpose where encouragement can achieve greater goals in a shorter time scale. Living in a time warp of yesteryear is the main reason why young people of today shun the old school thinking as invariably it comes with little or no explanation, justification or qualification. I will compliment and encourage as and when it is relevant or necessary and redirect rather than criticise in order to create greater efficiency and willingness from the people with whom I associate, young and old alike. Negative nit picking is destructive and should be left to history, especially in the armed forces where so many leave prematurely. Getting the best from the recruits is a skill, we no longer “break” a horse with a rod of iron or train a dog with commands alone for instance. Global thinking is far more efficient and useful than tunnel vision. Enjoy your week end, I will leave you to have the last word.

No, they look like what they are serving soldiers in His Majesty's Armed Forces wearing ceremonial dress and carrying firearms fitted with live ammunition. These men are fully active soldiers who have fought in places such as Afghanistan wearing their normal combat uniform. In no way, shape or form could they ever be mistaken for "little boys playing dress up" and it is an insult to them to suggest it. By the way, it is not your age I am a pensioner. Edited for typo.
