Intro to Carabiners... by "UnclippedClimbing" ... Not sure if trying to kill us all...

Interesting, some good things, some mix-ups. First, if someone is here for an Intro to Carabiners, avoid technical climbing terms they may not know, or SHOW them: Top-rope masterpoint, clipping rope, quick-draws, cams, building anchors, aid climbing, big wall climbing, etc. More show, less talk. 1:08- you say horizontal but your finger points up (vertical). Usually called major axis and minor axis, not horizontal and vertical. The nose of the carabiner, not the tooth. Wire gate is not just a lighter carabiner but the lighter gate doesn't flutter or bounce open from impact or vibration as a metal gate carabiner does. Sometimes "bigger, older, heavier" may be prefered if a larger capacity is needed. At 6:43, both carabiners are Ds, what you meant to say was, "...except this D carabiner is locking." I believe the last carabiner is a modified or offset D since one side is wider than the other. 8:20 "D-ring?" Take these in the helpful spirit with which I intended.

***** Apologies if I missed my goal of providing constructive criticism. If you didn't find anything I said helpful, I'm sorry. LOL- actually, I HAVE uploaded a video a few years ago, but I would put it in the category of how it's NOT done! It's pretty bad, wasn't meant for the masses, just for a few friends, and yes, I talked incessantly, didn't have a script, didn't rehearse, said a couple things wrong... Now that I think of it, I should take it off-line, except I think it's on an account that I can't get to anymore. Anyway, sorry if my points aren't helpful, although I don't see why I have to have great videos to have valid comments.

Holy crap, thanks for correcting 50% of my newly-gained knowledge. I just came here to understand the numbers on the side of mine but walking away with a wealth of knowledge, thanks to you and OP. Thank you.

Keep in mind, the kN rating is a force rating. When you fall, you are putting more weight on the system than just your body weight. This is why rope stretch is very important to distribute the work (from kinetic energy) out over a longer distance (work=force*distance). And reduce that peak force exerted on gear. Its also why shock loading static systems is very dangerous, as static lines, like dynema and webbing, don't stretch (much) so all the energy of a fall has to be absorbed very quickly once all the slack is out of the system. These are the moments you need these seemingly absurd force ratings.

We once tested a few Carabiners between a 7.5 ton truck & an 9 ton truck. The 9 toner had to tow the 7.5 toner into motion using 4 loops of polyprop atached to 1 of 4 different Carabiners. Only one took it, 2 snaped & one actualy shattered into 6 pieces like shrapnel. Even the fourth one broke in the end. It wasnt very scientific but it was fun.

Excellent video. Very instructive. Thanks for good information! Wondering about strength of biners in a fall with sudden impulse forces though.

" 23 K.N. is a lot of weight or a lot of force.." That's a very precise statement :-)

Mine says for rock climbing and mountaineering only but I used mine for my keys. What's going to happen?
@lauraduke28693 жыл бұрын
That is so funny ! Your keys may rebel against being carabineered together , and in protest lodge a key war and ,banning together ,exert their brassy muscles to break the carabineer into tiny little slivers of what they once were , therefore returning freedom to the key players involved! IT COULD HAPPEN!!!! LOL!

HMS is also called "pearabiner", in reference to the pear shape. I've only heard this in the arborist community, though.

Which would be best for hammocking leisurely with a double hammock and for hammock camping also with a double hammock? I was thinking maybe a wire gate would be good.

Which one would I need for a homemade calisthenics suspension setup? It needs to support my bodyweight, under 200 lbs at the moment, but may add external load dor pullups qnd dips. I need to calculated acceleration, I assume, which would increase tolerance, too.

can I use 12kn carabines for climbing or I will need more Kn ?
@Miminyte5003 жыл бұрын
12 kN is not regarded as acceptable for climbing purposes, in general it isn't advisable to go with carabiners below 20 kN, with most reputable brands going for between 20 and 30 kN for standard use climbing carabiners. 12 kN carabiners should have a warning stating they're not for climbing.
