We just adopted Quinn, and Italian Greyhound, into our pack, we have three other dogs. Quinn is 8 mo, VERY playful, has separation anxiety, and is a landshark, if it's anywhere he can get it, it's in his mouth!! One of our dogs, a Pug/chi, is jealous of him, and snaps at him a bit over toys, resting places, or for no reason at all. Not that often, he also plays with Quinn and will sleep next to him, so I'm hoping nothing big comes of it. We give all food, treats, and let the older dog out the door first and so far Quinn is fine with it. Thanks for the video, Quinn is learning all of these things as well.

I suggest teaching Quinn and the Pug to leave each other alone when they have toys. If you see one has a toy just say "get your own" and show them an available toy of their own

This motivates me so much! I have two german shepherds, the older being very laid back, while the younger is very socially anxious and extremely "into" resource guarding. While they are very comfortable around each other and don't argue, my more social dog is suffering under the social aversion of our youngster. This gives me ideas for training with both of them and also with my anxious dog in the presence of other, well known dogs (from a distance), in ways that vary from what I'm already doing anyway. ;)

Wow, I had no idea Wish struggled with that, Thank you for sharing! What do you do if your dogs start to become on bad terms? You’re such a master at preventing bad behavior, but I’ve done a terrible job.... My adopted Chihuahua mix got along perfectly with my Maltese mix until we moved houses a few months ago. Now my Chi mix bullies my poor Maltese mix, growling at her, charging her, and snapping at her if she gets too close to me, the couch, or her kennel. My poor Maltese mix is becoming cautious about walking by the couch and the kennel, trying not to provoke my chi mix. =( I don’t know why this happened, or how to reverse it.

I’ve been watching your videos for a while now and I was recently talking with my service dog trainer and funnily enough she suggested watching your videos! This quarantine has been very hard with training and I’m less optimistic about his chances at successfully being certified (my country has a certification system). But I’m trying my best under these very difficult circumstances.
@kikopup4 жыл бұрын
Well, I think if a service dog has the right temperament it will be ok :) There are lots of things you can do like this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5yVmXpjf7agnrs and you can practice with dogs and distractions with friends socially distancing, and noises etc. Not sure what your main concern is.

@@kikopup ah unfortunately I live out on an acreage and it’s difficult getting to the city to get him exposed and comfortable with distractions such as children and other dogs (he does well with adults). The only thing I have out here are donkeys which he’s actually pretty good with after training him around them (between a fence). I guess since he’s a heeler mix his impulse control is random, sometimes it’s good and other times it’s really bad. I don’t have much to work with out here.

Hello. Any advice on introducing a bigger puppy to a small older dog? We have a smaller 12-year-old mini foxy and are getting a ten-week-old border collie cross very soon. All advice assumes the bigger dog is the adult. She(the puppy) will be the same size as him (the elder) when we bring her home, and only get bigger. The mini foxy is a fairly quiet dog, the kind who will go quiet and hide in a corner when overwhelmed or stressed, and is now very low energy. He’s used to being an only dog these days, but he grew up with a pushy older sister twice his size and was then known to snarl at her in order to stick up for himself. Fortunately, he is not yet arthritic. He is primarily my mother’s dog, and her priority. The puppy is, according to the breeder, pretty calm but also outgoing, and from a very chill mother, for a border collie (this is true, I’ve met her). But she’s still a puppy and will be high energy. She will be primarily my responsibility, but she will still need to share the house with the mini foxy. We are concerned about stressing out the older dog, and want to make the transition as easy as we can for him. Also, your dogs look so lovely and happy.

Yes. Similar but you coudl use more management and prevention like having both on harnesses and leashes and starting further away and also have a barrier between. Here is a video about introducing a new puppy to other dogs and it would work for a cat. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6CxYpetdrGYbLc I would just teach the puppy that playing and chasing the cat is off limits but spending time near is perfectly ok.

I just just subscribed to your video channel . You're very helpful and I like the way you show how dogs interact. I have 2 dogs. Both are BMD. My male is a little older 1year old and my female is 6 months. My female is constantly barking around us as I start to get both dogs out for their a.m. walk. What would you recommend to help this young dog to not bark or nip at my older dog? Thank you very much.
@kikopup4 жыл бұрын
Practice when its not walk time and build the behavior you do want. Perhaps you want your dog to lay or sit on a chair as you harness the other dog up then put the harness on the other dog. You could practice in training sessions. It will take at least 10-12 sessions to condition a new behavior to be stronger than the one that exists of course

Great video. Love the trust and intentionality. Question: at two minutes 50 seconds, you begin feeding the two Chihuahuas individually, starting with the older dog. What are the pros and cons of starting with the older dog versus the puppy. Could feeding the puppy first create a conditioned response in the older dog, or could it initiate jealousy which would be hard to undo? Thanks.
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
The reason that I feed kiko first is to teach the puppy not to bum rush her face thinking kikos treat is for her. Once learned then you could feed the puppy first then the older dog. Or if you have helpers start out the older dog at a distance getting treats for seeing soemone else interact with the puppy.

I have a 4 1/2 rescue dog. I was told he was a pointer/ lab but as time goes by I think he has part pitbull and pointer. He is so sweet. He was fully trained by me and he knows all his commands in two weeks. I got him when he was 4 months old. He gets very excited when people knock at my door. He jumps and I usually have to put him in our kitchen that has a gate. ( large kitchen) I’m thinking of adopting a chiweenie puppy. I am starting to get anxiety about the whole thing. I’ve read where chihuahuas can be aggressive and there can be a very sad ending. I am a huge animal lover and I want peace and had money for all my fur babies. Any thoughts? Love your videos. Hi there! I have a new puppy and your videos have been such a big help. Do you have any advice about what to do when your puppy does not introduce herself to other dogs calmly? I have been doing a settle in public spaces at distances from other dogs to make her calmer around other dogs, and it has helped with her reactions to other dogs around her, but I was wondering if there is anything I can do for when I actually let her approach other dogs. Is there anything besides feeding treats calmly with each step toward the other dog?

I love this, especially the tips about coping with the socially anxious dog. I got my first two dogs together, and one was reactive and the other was pretty confident. I put a ton of work into introducing the reactive dog to my 3rd dog, and it paid of well and they get along great. I wish I had been more proactive with the two more friendly dogs, because I had to do several years of remedial work to get things okay after a few arguments. It's really nice to see how well Splash is doing and how quickly she recategorized Lil Sproingy into a "cool" dog. Do you aim to eliminate the excitement shivers for Miss Bouncypants as a sign of overarousal about food, over time, or is that an acceptable level of excitement in a Chi?
@kikopup4 жыл бұрын
For chi puppies they can shiver so easily, for example if I am holding her and someone enters the room her ears shake and shiver. With my chi kiko it was just in puppyhood. Im not concerned about it I believe with the reducing arousal over food it will disappear. Gosh the first day I got her I thought she might be a resource guarder, but it was just shed never had anything but kibble and so she hunkered over the food and scarfed it down like a guarder, but after a whole day of getting tiny treats she started eating normally.

Hi, I was wondering if you have any advice on socializing older dogs, because I have an old dog who is not social at all and I’m giving all my effort to work with her, but nothing seems to work :(.
@kikopup4 жыл бұрын
I suggest first teaching her to feel comfortable settling around dogs, at a distance and then closer. Its ok for dogs to not want to interact, but you can teach them at least to feel comfortable and safe that you wont let the other dogs bug them. Sometimes when they get to that point they then feel safe enough to want to interact.

Please HELP!! We have a new puppy as well (he's 9 weeks old as well). He's not only mouthy, he's VERY mouthy. He chews, chews, chews, and chews--on us. We are doing the "be boring" routine and, of course, not playing with him in a way that encourages chewing and biting. We're providing him with a variety of chew toys (hard and plush). But he continues to chew, chew chew. Not sure what else to do to put a stop to this. I hope you're right and that he'll be very social!

As soon as he chews or looks like he is about to chew on your interrupt- pick him up if need be, then show him his toys, during those times that the puppy gets over excited, put him in a large pen and encourage him to play with his toys. I suggest playing 2 min games 2 times a day for at least 12 days in a row on these two games: biting skin kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZWwfIVrnp6chLM biting clothes kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqivl5WhmJ2BaJY You can also work on behaviors the increase impulse control like stay with distractions and leave it kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWG9ZIZ8iZ2IZsk&vl=en kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJaZZ6SFntiiaJo These will really help too. 1- You can try saying the cue, then waiting longer and longer to do the hand signal to see if the puppy does it without waiting for teh hand signal, or making your hand signal smaller and smaller after saying the cue. 2- kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2rXgJejf7GJopI 3- Some puppies grew up peeing on a specific surface and so will prefer that. You could try some other toilet like grass in the litter area, then switch back to the pads when the puppy is going in the box reliably

Hold your hand under the lid, do that for some time. Dont hold the paw when the dog puts it in as that can make them not want to do it again. One thing you can do if the pee pads are in the pen, is put the bed in 1 corner and tape pee pads down over entire pen, so the puppy has to go on them. Then as the puppy starts to go on them, tape less down until you have 1 in the corner the puppy goes to the toilet most.
