Been meaning to tell you, I love your hair style. I could never pull it off but you wear it well. Your overall confidence in how you train comes off so sweet and friendly but very effective. Love all your puppy videos -- it's been so helpful to see you start from the ground up and see their progress through adulthood. It's really helped me to understand just how much impact we have on our dogs during their first year of life, and the importance of making sure that impact is deliberate so you can lay the firmest foundation possible. Learning to recognize the source/cause of so many common behaviors and traits, both desirable and not, as well as being able to understand how my current dog's behavior was shaped by my "parenting", is going to be really important when raising my next puppy.

Can you try and show some videos where your puppy is actually doing physical mouthing or jumping up and grabbing in order to show people what to do when their dog does the incorrect choice? Your puppy is adorable but already so calm and focused in this video because your training is so great. I would love to share you working with this puppy with clients but I’m sure the first thing I’m going to hear is “ no matter what we do he still jumps up and is mouthy when the kids are playing “ etc - probably the way your pup was initially. Of course it’s much harder for the typical family with kids to set a puppy up for environmental success the way we do as trainers. Just a thought… Would be very helpful if he has any bursts of imperfect behavior you can catch it on film lol!

"not mouthing is a worry" - I was hoping you'd expand on this a bit more. My puppy never mouthed, even a little bit. At the height of her teething, she still didn't mouth anything inappropriate - just bit at the air until I supplied an ice treat.

It doesnt necessarily mean the puppy will be antisocial, sometimes the mother has really trained the puppy not to bite, or its just personality. But puppies that don't interact with people or dogs sometimes also don't tend to want to approach to mouth on them.

I had a keeshond pup for a week (long story short we returned him to the breeder after 5 days because our elderly cat stopped eating from the stress and I busted my knee and couldn't carry the pup up and down the stairs for him to potty) and he bit me, to the point of drawing blood, constantly. Toys were interesting for about 2 minutes and then he wanted FLESH. He didn't care about chew toys and only food distracted him, for a little bit, from biting me. He also barely wanted to sleep. I wish I knew what I did wrong. I tried your methods with calm training on mats and he enjoyed that but as soon as we stopped, he'd get excited and bite the heck out of me again!
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
Awe. You know I find that often with puppies in a litter with think coated puppies, they bite harder sometimes, and my theory is that they bite eachother and the other puppies dont feel a thing because of the thick coat. I am sorry for the disappointment. I am a big fan of finding the perfect match of the dog for the person and also the preexisting dogs. Thats actually why I wanted this puppy because he would be good for my dogs, not stress them out etc. Have you considered a small breed? You know I am a big fan of tiny dogs as well hehe.

I'm at the same point right now with our Akita pup (9 weeks old). He won't stop biting us and looses interest in all chew toys after max. 5 mins and starts biting again. I wish I knew what we're doing wrong. Redirecting doesn't work as he looses interest in every toy we offer after presenting it twice. So he chews on everything and no chance of redirecting, unless it's a new toy he hasn't been introduced to before. I don't think I can take it much longer. It's so exhausting and the biting hurts so bad it makes me mad.

My puppy (just 9 weeks, and also a border collie), isn't food motivated (she had some tummy issues but is feeling better today). How would you train this if you can't really use treats? I've been redirecting with toys and chews and being calm around her. But toys obviously increase her arousal (I use them when she gets bitey outside). Any advice? Should I just wait till she has more of an appetite to train?
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
Actually you could just hand feed her her meals, playing the handling and grooming games, calmly reach and touch and feed at the same time, then reach touch mark and feed a piece of her meal.

Hey Emily. How do you have enough hours in the day to take care of so many Border Collies at once? I was taught that every BC is a bundle of energy that needs lots of stimulation every day to prevent boredom/destructive behavior. I realize this is basically your full-time job, but I'm still wondering how to put that into the right perspective. Do they all exercise at the same time? Do you take turns? How do you not become exhausted and overwhelmed? Or am I seriously overestimating the anecdotes I'm hearing about BCs?
@lindsayjackson11203 жыл бұрын
For a puppy who is already an established “mouther” of clothes, hands, etc, would you approach the training in the same way? Ie start stationary, items of interest laying but not moving etc? And then progressively make the items more interesting (ie with movement) once they are able to succeed with the easier stimulus?

Wow I’m new to your channel, already learned a ton, love your approach to all of the behavior training you’re establishing since day one. The petting calmly that is so helpful even for adults. Looooveee your puppy and the other border collies on the sofas. Is there a preferred spot to pet a fearful dog ? I was told once to pet under ears, it’s better than what i was doing before but I’d love to hear your approach. Thanks
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the dog. Generally around the chest, under the chin and the shoulders but I would suggest to with a fearful dog to teach them to interact with you first using a game like "touch". and then start to touch and feed the dog like in my handling video.
@Lucamitm3 жыл бұрын
@@kikopup Thanks for the calming spots to pet. Oh I guess I didn't express myself properly, my dog gets fearful of other dogs at times and that might end in reactive aggression, like he growls. He used to crawl behind me now he's getting "brave", I didn't pick on his cues when he was a puppy and now he doesn't like high energy dogs and I think he has been afraid of them since a puppy. Back then I just let the other puppy play with him without realizing my dog didn't want to and needed me to "protect him", instead I thought he would just learn if I kept having him with puppies

I don’t know what the rules are in your region, but if it is possible, could you do a vet video? My older dog recently had a health scare so I’ve been going to the vet 5x in 5 days now, and the stronger she gets the more difficult she gets going there. I want to do right with my future puppy, even though that might take a while since I’m scared to get one after this health scare 😅 Your pup looks wonderful

If you always redirect puppy biting, do you think this hinders them developing good bite inhibition?
@kikopup3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. The main part of the training is teaching the puppy what to do around hands and feet and clothes, and I didn't mention in the video, but when training with food, the puppy is learning to open and close his mouth around the fingers delicately to take the food. With worrisome puppies I recommend getting a trainer involved. For puppies that have been a singleton, or suffered some trauma or stress, they can bite abnormally hard and need a very careful approach so they are not rehearsing the hard biting.

Do you have any suggestions for when friends/family members come over to see and play with your puppy in the first weeks?
