@@hengloose I had to replace ALL my 19" rims due to damage from unmaintained roads. The Trans Am in the 80s had big rims for its time: 16". Bring back 16" rims!

@@GerardPinzone You can't fit brakes inside a 16" wheel. Other than looks, the main driving factor in larger wheels in performance cars is being able to fit larger brake rotors.

Note that at least the 19” and 20” wheel can handle 45 sidewall, have them on my model Y now and have seen them on a 3

Does a completely blocked off wheel affect brake cooling? Is a bulletproof wheel really that relevant when it's surrounded by an obviously not bulletproof tire? The black wheels are very good looking, however.

EVs don't use the brakes much. Don't race with this and you'll be fine. As for the tires, there are ones that designed for exactly this purpose. Standard run-flats should work too.

Yes, if you use the brakes often then these wheels will make them hotter. There is a reason why most street wheels are open, to cool and vent brake heat. Reminds me of Centerline wheels from the late 70's that a friend of mine had on his car. They looked great but he constantly complained about how hot they got. There is no relevance to having the wheels bulletproof, that's more of a gimmick playing on the Cybertruck bulletproof steel thing.

This was actually Armin's company and got the Delta wheel patent years ago. I think he signed up with Sandy for the name and maybe some financial support to it. That's a good thing but Sandy didn't come up with the company.

I love the Tesla-logo look of those Signature wheels. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of such low profile tires. I wouldn't want bigger than 19" on my M3. But realize I'm probably in the minority. Overall I do like what I see.

how does the cooling for brakes work if wheels are completely closed off?

I am not so sure its a huge concern for daily drivers as regenerative braking do 95% of the work and the brakes see little to no use outside of racing type or emergency braking situations. In fact I have to remind myself to once in a while to use the breaks just to knock the rust off of the rotors on occasion.

I'm happy to hear in multiple replies in this thread that smaller "Signature" wheels are coming. And naturally they will be lighter. It would be great to have a direct weight comparison in the same size as the factory part they would replace. And I've still heard nothing about aero properties. I'm not willing to give up miles for aesthetics, and I'm currently running my custom-painted aero covers for max range. I'm not gonna change out the wheels for less range, though I love the idea of lighter AND not having plastic aero caps (which in my case make all sorts of rattling noises, and wear the paint off the rims).

I doubt the gain from aerodynamics and reduction in rotating mass will be very significant on the Cybertruck because the tires are pretty inefficient and have a lot of mass. Tire and wheel mass matter some because energy is stored in the rotating mass. The further the mass from the focus of rotation, the more energy it stores. The battery has to supply the energy to store in the wheels/tires. True, you get some of that energy back through regeneration when slowing. Also, there is no additional penalty while maintaining a steady speed. The issue manifests with frequent start-stop.

Sweet! Hope you guys make out like bandits! If you start making a 19" for the model Y I will keep you in mind if my OEM wheels ever get damaged or if I decide to change out my wheels/tires during the Winter with a set having traction tires on them. If you get some business you might want to see if you can team up with a top tire brand and offer a package deal?? Something like Tesla offers with Winter tires on the set of rims.

Nice wheels. While you are doing mods for the CyberTruck, any chance of a collaboration on a range extender battery with someone like ONE (Our Next Energy). Their tech would be ideal as a range extender. Maybe using the storage well in the truck bed? Just a thought. Keep up the good work.

How is the wheel not going to clog up with Mud? The inside of the wheel I assume is open and will pull in mud. Now with a closed outside you have no way to clear the mud from the inside of the wheel.

Do you not have any experience in the off-road or rally world? The caliper clearance to the wheel barrel is what prevents any substantial buildup. If it's a real serious application, you build a scraper into the caliper carrier.

I was lucky to find some old school Prodrive 18" wheels for my Model 3. 18"x8.5 with a 32 offset. They weigh 18lbs even. A hell of a lot less than the standard 18 wheel that comes for the vehicle. Fully forged wheel by Rays Eng. I guess due to its size and offset, they were being offered with no one being the wiser. Got them for a steal too. 🙂
