I backed this - getting the starter decks and a couple booster boxes. I'm super hyped - worst case scenario I'll have a couple boxes of cardboard rectangles with cool art. I also signed up for our Sorcery subscription. Right now just one box - but after the game comes out and if I love it, I might change it to 2 per release (especially since I heard they're only planning maybe one release a year instead of 50 sets a week like MTG right now)

But I've seen people over simplify elements in general as a thing, so it's all just spell flavor at the end of the day.

One thing I read in the rules is that, to cast a spell, you need to nominate either your Avatar or one of your minions with the Spellcaster keyword. It's an action that Spellcaster minions or your Avatar can take. I couldn't find further clarification within the ruleset so I'll ask here: Is the amount of spells you can cast in a turn further limited by the Spellcaster keyword? e.g., if you only have your Avatar on the board, can you only cast one spell per turn, regardless of mana? Additionally, if a minion takes the Spellcasting option, can they take other actions? (e.g., if you use your Avatar to cast a spell, can you still tap them to play a Site?)

@@foyoGames MTG is miles more popular here and outshines everything else as TCG. I think berserk does ok financially as a board game, but it lacks official competitive support and degraded into kitchen table game without massive public events. Card prices for new version are laughable, while some of the classic cards are chased after. There are small communities that play classic berserk (akin to Old School magic format), but their numbers are really few. Which is sad, because in 2008-2010 era there were a lot of tournaments and the game seemed to go parabolic in terms of attracting new players.

I am so in! Backed the kickstarter and subbed with ya'll, and cannot wait for release to crack packs. Firmly in the "nostalgic millennial" demographic myself, and I've been chasing that old feeling of classic MTG for soo long without realizing I'd just lost it, joylessly grinding away on MTGA in search of something that's just not there anymore... This video reminded me of how WoW classic snapped me out of so many stale MMOs, and back into some good, silly, clunky fun. I think classic game design has so much to offer us right now - one the reasons we play TCGs and not more purely skill-based games like chess is that feeling that one draw/one well-timed play could alter the story of a game. That and the high-fantasy element that this game has in spades. Love that this game seems to appreciate that, and I hope it finds a niche among people who want to collect, check out the art, and have some great kitchen table-style fun!

100% love the art, biggest selling point, by far. However, I'm still not convinced on gameplay. Stacking cards gets confusing quickly from the how to play videos I've seen. Big learning curve versus Magic, Metazoo, Pokemon or even D spirits (conversely, even though D spirits is very silly and the art is more for children, the gameplay actually pushed me to back the kickstarter). Also, with 400 cards out of the gate, that is a huge pool for collectors who want full sets. I don't really see myself playing this game over Magic, MetaZoo or D spirits, but the artwork and Kickstarter rarity just may be enough to pull me in for a case and the starter decks.
@teamcovenant
@teamcovenant 2 жыл бұрын
We had no issues learning the game, and the stacking was one of our favorite parts. Gives a physicality and visceral appreciation of the mechanics. It was much easier to learn/understand than FAB, or a number of classics, like Star Wars CCG, Middle Earth CCG, etc. But even so, these "chunkier" games having steeper learning curves is not a net negative. There is significant upside to increased granularity/theme/flavor over the streamlined rulesets that competitive Magic spawned. There will be some collectors that want full sets, but the beautiful thing here is that we're not really seeing it as a "buy X boxes to get X copy of every card". Open packs, discover new cards, integrate them into your decks; call us old fasioned, but that has a lot of appeal. For instance, there are four of us here at Covenant splitting a case by faction. We'll then build decks with those pulls and have a wonderful time. Plan to do this with each new set. Having full playsets isn't even a consideration!

Decent art, nice concept trying to be more old school, Middle-Earth CCG is my favourite CCG art and gameplay-wise. Something about the layout of these cards I'm just not feeling it. They look like cards you get in a board game as to use as tokens? if that makes sense. Maybe it'll grow on me.

I hope I remember to look back on this comment in 5 years. Crowdfunded, dead TCGs are a dime a dozen. Why do they happen, and which ones have stuck around or gained any traction at all? Why would you design and sell a random, lottery game in the modern era? Not to mention all the smaller TCGs or LCGs which hang on, which could use more players, like Exodus, Exceed, Star Realms, etc.

You could always set a Google Calendar event for yourself or something similar :-) As for the random booster approach, I guess while it's definitely true that it's kinda scummy it's also true that my best memories of MTG from when I was a kid are pre-release tournaments, etc played with random drafts, so I guess there is one thing that random booster type games are good for ;-)

I'm not so sure about this one. Listening to the recent Covenant Podcast about this game, and in comparison to other recent games that TC has looked closely at/added to their store, it just doesn't seem to reach the bar that has been set previously. Skytear is an awesome game with engaged designers/publishers, a solid plan for the future including tie in games and awesome community engagement. FAB isn't for me but I appreciate that high bar of quality that TC seems to have set for it before diving in. The FAB team have solid plans for the future, and seeing the guys play it it is clear that the game is deep and enjoyable. Sorcery however seems paper thin in almost all regards. The designer will be making releases really far apart (because of the art) meaning the chances of a meta stall is super high. He says it's a game suitable for a games night with friends, but that seems to work against the idea of a TCG, with new and changing rules added with each set. The designer seems unsure about almost all aspects of the business and in the podcast the guys seemed to be driving the discussion as he was mostly talking about how grid games usually fail, low profit margins, and wanting to get a million on Kickstarter. He also says the game can be swingy because of strong unique cards and calls using them a 'feel good moment', but which sounds like a feel bad moment for your opponent (thinking of the groan when there's a board sweep in MTG) All in all it just doesn't seem to hit the bar of what TC has highlighted to us previously. Art might be great, but I don't think it will be enough to keep people interested in this game and keep them coming back for more.

Thanks for the detailed comment here, James! Here's a few points from our end: 1. Erik has monumental experience with Path of Exile. He's not good at marketing himself, but we have absolutely no concerns about his aptitude, business or otherwise, based on his experience and private conversations. 2. Thinking about the meta *at all* isn't where we find value in Sorcery. Four of us are splitting a case and having fun with it. If people want to get a full playset of everything and then grind out the *absolute best* competitive deck, they can. But that's not the audience or approach being cultivated by the publisher, and not the one we'll be taking. 3. "Game night with friends" can absolutely accommodate a TCG - that's kind of the point. That's what all TCGs were before the "tournament" focus became the expected standard. You're right in that this is a different kind of game. It's not aimed at super precise design with tournament meta games in mind (FAB). As we've said everywhere we've talked about it, this one is about re-capturing and improving the experiences that were happening in the mid-90s - that is, Magic before anyone knew what the Pro Tour was. If you're looking for a game that is going for the Big Three, with massive tournaments and exceedingly high attention to a competitive metagame, there are good options out there. Sorcery won't be for you, and that's totally fine.

One more thing to add to this going through YT comments this morning - this comment on our recent Lord of the Rings TCG throwback gets at the player type we are talking about: "[Watching these throwbacks] revamped my love for these older games where the focus was Theme and immersion over an engaging and competitive environment. I think in the last 15 years a lot of that focus was shifted to the Board games and Miniature market with the boom in that decade of high quality production compared to the 90's. Coming from someone who competed at Worlds for SW: Destiny and currently a PBA (bowling) member, i appreciate the competitive scene just as much as anybody, but there is a space in the customizable games market that still has not quite been filled in these last years, although the cooperative LCG/ECG's have come close. I absolutely love Ashes but it is just not the same feel. I could not even begin to imagine the possibilities if Marvel Champions was designed in the way that decipher approached their games just how immersive it could be compared to what it is now. I think there is definitely space for more games like the upcoming Sorcery TCG, and others where the focus is put back on immersion and FUN, rather than being designed to fit a model that suits Organized play as the space currently allows."

Well the art does look extremely good, and it seems pretty fun to play. Honestly though I think they do their game a disservice by focusing on it being old-fashioned rather than, well, high quality. I'd probably pick it up if it wasn't for the price tag; as a one-box game with a less ambitious amount of cards I'd have been sold.

completely right, Zach. as elder millennials, we have a unique perspective of remembering the pre-internet gaming and seeing the aftermath “So your grand play is a 1 cost camel?” Camels are a useful and majestic animal, Steven, and they will destroy all those who doubt their prowess !! Blue players are the worst. But it is due to cancels and counters. When blue is just because its water and not doing the typical blue hyper-control stuff. Steven, seeing that move you were thinking about, and that something like that is potentially possible; a wizard teleporting and dealing crazy damage, is awesome. Those types of plays in games are always so much fun to see and play!! The deck construction is fascinating; the more common the card, the less copies you can include. That is mindboggling to me and yet genius!! Steven, I hope the later is true about card creation that cards will be designed for the kitchen table gaming and if people break it competitively then so be it. I feel like I’ve been hearing about this game for a bit now and was on the fence. The art is truly gorgeous and a high selling point for the game. Seeing you two play it and hearing your commentary, definitely is pushing me over the edge on this game. Not to mention its a subscription so I wont even have to think about it when thr next installment is available, it'll just show up at my door!!

So I’m reading the rules and with words likes ‘mana’ and ‘tap 90 degrees to right’ seems like Eric is opening himself up to a potential lawsuit from WotC even if it is permissible as they can just force a lawsuit and make smaller game co that looks successful to fork out legal fees vs developing their product - I’ve seen this a few times over the years but I am not in the US and not a lawyer, just voicing some concern.

We'd put good money on nothing coming of that - do not think it would end in WOTC's favor, and it would reveal the emperor has no clothes. Most have speculated that legally protecting these terms, and similar facets of a game system, would not hold up in court.

It doesn't look anything like Quest for Dominion, at least the one we found on KZbin. The Pokemon looking one? There are tons of similar ideas, execution matters.

Using Frank Frazetta's art is downright disrespectful. His art has been way overused. My God, did we really need Death Dealer's image on yet another item? Since he painted it in 1973, it has been on trading cards, comic books, t shirts and playing cards
@teamcovenant

It's not disrespectful. It was a desired partnership. --Our project had a strong focus on the art and aesthetics from the very beginning, and this conviction has only gotten stronger with time. Our appreciation for hand-painted art and the special feelings it evokes naturally led to collaborations with the legendary artists we now work with" says Founder Erik Olofsson, former Creative Director at Grinding Gear Games (Path of Exile) "When it comes to seminal fantasy art, nothing is more iconic than the work of Frank Frazetta. Bringing this into the trading card game space was a personal dream come true. We are delighted to have reached an agreement which will showcase Frazetta's art in the way it was always intended to be appreciated, by the biggest fans of the genre he helped create." Sara Frazetta, granddaughter of Frank Frazetta and owner of Frazetta Girls LLC was delighted to announce the partnership. "Erik's Curiosa was our choice for a licensee who approaches our body of work in the way we feel it should be handled, to elevate our property and position it with Frank Frazetta’s biggest fans. We are delighted that iconic pieces such as Death Dealer and Egyptian Queen will come to life in Sorcery: Contested Realm for fans of collectable card games.” “To see the Kickstarter achieve funding of over $1,000,000 USD at this early stage, is an incredible achievement. We can't wait to see the reactions from the community when we introduce Frank's art to this incredible project."

I'm not particularly impressed from what i've seen thus far. Drawing at the beginning of your turn instead of at the end is an outdated method of drawing, the cards themselves don't seem to have many interesting effects, basing the avatars around elements is plain boring, and worse of all the rules language is unclear. This is bound to create problems as the card pool grows with time. The cards don't even say what kind they are. And yes, the art is good as far as polar bears and angler fish go, which aren't interesting creatures to play. Oh, but i do like that the lands come from a seperate deck.
@lystic9392
@lystic9392 2 жыл бұрын
The rules are currently at version 0.3 and they are working on them full time to make them more clear and complete. Right now there are legitimately some things simply not in the rules. (For instance that besides Ranged attacks, most spells cannot cross the Void.) I think it's the part of the game that needs the most attention, at a high priority. I really like this game and if I have the energy I will make sure, somehow, that there will be clear rules for this game. If not me, I am sure considering the love for this game there will be others who will clarify any major rule questions with the designers and get it documented. The cards do say what kind they are. It's in the typeline. So if it says 'Ordinary Mortal Beasts of magnificent grace,' it's an Ordinary rarity, a Beast, and a Mortal. And if a card says 'Earth guides the flow of Water in one Elite Site,' it's an Elite Site, -an Earth Site and a Water Site- . !!Error!! I had to correct myself here: The element(s) of the site is determined by the type(s) of threshold it gives you. So a site giving you a water threshold is a water site, no matter if the typeline mentions it. The avatars you see here are the 4 avatars exclusive to the preconstructed decks. In the set you'll find many other avatars. But don't expect them to be the star of the show like in FaB. They have a unique trait and that's pretty much it. For instance you have an avatar that gives you a threshold in every element from the start to play with. So you can more easily build a functional deck that uses 3+ elements with that one, or play very high threshold cards more easily. It's more like a Console card in Netrunner. It gives a hint to what your deck is wanting to do. Whether the effects of the cards are interesting is subjective, right? I respect that and I think that's a very personal thing. One of the main reasons that I am interested in this game (besides the style) is because I think the effects of the cards are lovely and wild. There are cards that are tethered to the site they are played on and can be let loose. There are cards that grow in size and strength as they move. Spells that can bounce between targets if you can keep paying for it. Minions that move Sites. Sites that only have space for one ground minion. And a lot of these effects can be used in ways someone might not initially expect. The grid together with submerge and burrowing leads to new interesting decisions for me, but perhaps that's because I haven't played as many card games as maybe you have.

@@yrusomad6 Not totally true, it depends on the type of cards that they intend to design. For example, some games have hand disruption strategies. If you draw at the end of the turn, that means you could lose that draw to disruption before you even get a chance to play it. Or, imagine if they design some cards that gain bonuses/effects while your hand it empty. If you draw at the end of your turn, those cards would never have their effects enabled on your opponents turn. Drawing at the beginning of a turn can enable entire archetypes that would not exist if the draw phase was end of turn.
