I had a portable Federal AM radio in the early 70s. I loved that thing. They had jacks for an ear piece.

Transistor radios were around since shortly after the transistor was invented in 1947. But in the mid to late '50s, as in all technology, they started to get smaller. I had one about this size for Christmas in '59. It was my pride and joy and I carried it around everywhere, except school, of course. It was AM only as FM really didn't have much on at that time. I loved this show as well. Even as a kid, I was blown away by all the beautiful women in the show. Thank you for posting this.

I had a radio similar to Maynard's when I was a kid. Mine was a Philco, a gift from my Uncle Paul. I used it to listen to music after my bedtime.

Many shirt-pocket transistor radios of the late 1950s and early 1960s were designed to be the size of a pack of cigarettes, because, everybody smoked then, and was familiar with the dimensions.

We had these in Junior High School in the late 60's. When the teachers came by and saw you listening with the ear plug wire they took it away and you had to get detention in order to get it back. Zenith and Motorola way years before Sony Panasonic and RCA tramsmitter radios. Nowadays they have ipods ipads cell phones and laptops and they allow them in every classroom. Why!!, I have no idea?...

My father had a Zenith portable radio like that, and it was maroon, which i bet this one is also. My mother had a similar-sized portable of a different design, and it was turquoise. Very '50s colors in plastic.

I wouldn't say the "first" transistor radio. Maybe the poster meant the first to be "shown" off and exposed on a regular sitcom T.V. program. I've never seen one prior to Dobie Gillis.
