Hi guys, in this video I'm going to show you some excercises to practice your alternate picking, there are 100s of these! 😅but just had to pick out a few...Remember to take it slow at first until you build up speed, use a metronome and just have fun! 🤗

It is fantastic to see a young Nigerian women so fluent in the universal language of guitar, an instrument that gets so little attention in Nigeria, unlike in the Congo, where guitar players like Flamme Kappaya, and Olivier Tchimanga, are mega-stars at home and abroad. Hopefully we will be hearing a lot more of Ms Helen Ibe's guitar mastery, and that she in turn will help awaken in Nigeria, a guitar revolution that will enrich the music industry. Any amateur performer can play recorded rap beats, leap about and shout rhymes while waving their arms about, but it takes many, many hours of disciplined, dedicated music theory and practice to become a true guitar master, of the caliber so eloquently demonstrated in Ms Helen Ibe's youtube videos. My humble prediction is that within a few short years, Ms. Helen Ibe will attain monumental success as a guitar player and performer, if not in Africa, then most certainly in the USA or Europe.

I'm glad that you are using the pinky with your excersize. Myself like a lot of guitarists have avoided using the pinky. Hopefully these excersizes will get me to use my pinky more. Thanks.

Great advice Helen. I would say that 10min of alt picking practice per day, every day, will yield amazing results for most guitarists after a year or so. One thing that you mentioned - but worth saying again - is to relax the picking hand/wrist/arm/shoulder as much as possible while doing these exercises. It is so easy to tense up (esp if sitting), to hold one's breath, to clinch teeth and to have a lop-sided "up-shoulder" thing happening - sometimes play in front of the mirror and check for this last one! Thank God for the metronome too, gotta play in time ...

Thank you beautiful, this is helpful with my nearly seven years of guitar, including what you said about the elbow on the " picking "arm. Unfortuately , I haven't used the metronome,So I need that to finally improve my speed. I'm glad you were suggested. And thanks for the new finger excercises

I must confess that I came here just to discover your voice and I am positively surprised. As for the guitar, I think I should master basic cords before involving in crazy picking and fingerstyle madness. I come back to this nice course later.

I play the guitar the rhythm style, from my childhood days, but the picking has always given me problems. I guess the reason is that i never sat in a guitar class, hence being badly self-taught, worked against me. I therefore see this internet lesson as a means of improvement.

A question in my mind is, on an average practice of say, one hour a day, how often should the strings be changed?

Wow, this is amazing, a woman teaching basic guitar methods and the use of plectrum. Oh, in fact, I know that the first lady virtuoso guitarist was a black American. I don't recall her name but you can google it. Most male guitarists were outplayed by this woman and they ended up bowing down and asking for lessons!!! That black woman would KICK ARSE on guitar playing even the legend ELVIS Presley begged her for lessons!!! Thanks.
