One note: The trees described in this presentation are those documented by the Woodland Guard in the specific region where the story takes place. Plenty of other trees exist all over the world and have their own varieties of Charmwork to give to creatures born by them. The story won’t explore those since the traveling distance of my characters won’t go *that* far, so if you have any local trees to you that you’d like to imagine powers for in this world, feel free!

I shall have to visit the hospital where I was born and examine the nearby trees.

This is awesome I've never seen a magic system based on trees before. Also I think this magic system is far more subtler, than what I usually see. I can't wait for more! P.S I looked up the most common trees in Brooklyn NY apparently I'd be a maple user so that's cool.

Gosh, I LOVE creative magic systems like this. A few thoughts: -It's really cool that all animal species are technically capable of magic, not just the ones that are the focus of your story. Nobody is excluded or innately "superior". It also gives the opportunity for different species to have different relationships to magic (like squirrels basing their life cycle around it while humans don't even know it exists). -I can easily imagine, among creatures that know about Charmwork, pregnant/nesting mothers doing their absolute best to stay in close proximity to trees while their young develop in hopes to be in the right place when giving birth. Even if not sure of the tree species, just making sure they're close to a tree, any tree. -In the future it would be easy to expand the magic system simply by focusing on a different part of Earth and imagining what powers the tree species in THAT area would grant. -The Charmwork Report being written from an in-universe perspective is super fun as well. And it's really interesting that the Woodland Guard wants to keep some of their knowledge about Charmwork private and "for internal use only". Why those pieces of information specifically? What do they hope to gain, or what harm are they afraid of?

I briefly told my dad about this magic system. He asked what happens if a creature is born on an airplane in the sky, on a ship in the middle of the ocean, or even in outer space. I told him being born too far away from any tree at all means no magic. Dad: Also, what's the definition of a tree here? me: What are you thinking about? Dad: Like, is bamboo a grass or a tree? At what point is it "tree"? At what point is it "rose bush"?

Having the healing magic only accelerate natural healing is a good way to keep magic compatible with disability representation. Lot of magic systems struggle with that

Holy moly! That’s an amazing magic system, Sunny! I’m always one for symbolism and I’m incorporating that stuff in my own fantasy stories, but this.. completely takes the cake! The different types of trees and the different Charmwork they hold are completely unique and amazing! Can’t wait to see how your characters learn how to use their Charmwork as the series goes on! 🤩 Also, minor note, if I would’ve been born in your world, I probably would’ve been an Elm user. I’ve always been an empath, and I try to offer advice to others on specific occasions (that rarely happens), but I try to console others whenever I’m pulled to, and I get past my social anxiety to do so. 😊

Based on best guess I'd have been born closest to a Palm, Palo verde, Mesquite or Acacia tree, none of which are defined in this system. Mystery powers it is!
@EverythingTheorist9 сағат бұрын
I keep turning this system around in my head (I just think it's neat) and now have a couple of questions: -For birds, reptiles, or amphibians, is the Charm Force type determined when the eggs are laid, or when the eggs are hatched? -Are littermates inevitably going to have the same Charm Force type as each other, since they're all born around the same time and in the same location? Or perhaps slight shifts in their mother's position make enough of a difference? -How specific are the tree varieties? For instance, do Red Maple and Silver Maple give the same powers? How about American Beech versus European Beech? -Just to check my understanding: Every creature has to be touching their Home Tree (or in very close proximity) in order to do Charmwork for the first time ever. If they don't train, they will have to be in contact every time they want to use their Charmwork. If they do train, they can learn to access their power away from their Home Tree.

because you have to touch your hometree to recharge if the hometree is destroyed would the creature have limited unrechargable power? also if a creature is born touching or close to a variety of trees will they have multiple low level powers or will it be chosen randomly. also for necromancy can it be used to speak with past love ones or is it specifically only for physical commands? im very curios about the world and im very excited to learn more about it!
@Sunnyfall14 сағат бұрын
The hometree refers to the species of tree you were born around rather than the specific individual tree, so you should have more chances to recharge your magic. However, if it’s a rare enough tree in the area you inhabit, you may lose access to your magic if you can’t find another.
@Sunnyfall14 сағат бұрын
It’s very difficult to be born *perfectly* equidistant from multiple trees. If someone was born even a molecule closer to one or another, that would become your home tree. If it really is equal…well there’s some debate but no one has ever received multiple home tree connections.

After that report I can definitely say I know a lot more species of tree the than I did before. I think if I were born in that world I'd be a birch user just like Lotta because my whole family and some my friends have told me that I am an empath. I think they're right because I seem to understand and feel others emotions very strongly.
