They are not in the same league as you excellently explained 1:18 in the beginning: Surface Pro 8 is a desktop replacement, a workhorse even for professional application development. I happily used an Surface Pro 4 (i7/16G/500G) as my main computer for office, development, video, drawing for 6 years or so. The ipad and Android are "just" consumer products with very limited use. Of course, when you want the best drawing experinece and you love Concepts, Procreate or Affinity Designer, iPad is the way to go. After watching your videos, now my primary drawing gear is Concepts on Samsung Tab S7 FE, brutally excellent combo, the vector art coming from Concepts is mind blowing. All this while I see other students carrying around both a laptop and an iPad / Android tablet. Samsung's original s-pen is mainly made for taking notes. The pressure sensor is not very good. If you want to use it for professional painting purposes, please buy a better wacom EMR pen. The initial activation force sensor has two data items, one is the grams of initial activation pressure, and the other is the percentage value of initial activation pressure (subject to krita pressure percentage test. The lower the percentage, the greater the pressure change of the drawn line) I have tested the wacom UD EMR technology pen with many enthusiasts. At present, only zbook x2 stylus has reached the 0.01% pressure percentage value of 1 gram IAF / krita of propen2 level, and the slightly worse is the 1-2 gram IAF / 0.01% pressure percentage value of conceptd 9 stylus / conceptd ezel 7 stylus, while the rest of lmay / Staedtler / wacom one are generally 3 gram IAF / 2% - 5% - 15%, Galaxy Tab S7 stylus is the 3G IAF 13-20% pressure percentage value.
@马永军-h6y2 жыл бұрын
In addition, the 0 gram IAF advertised by Apple pencil is not the real 0 gram IAF. Apple uses a water leaking pen mechanism. Apple pencil starts inking when it is about 0.5-1mm away from the screen and does not touch the screen, which makes it look like its IAF is very low. But this has side effects. It's easier for you to have unnecessary lines when writing or lifting your pen. The advantages and disadvantages depend on your artistic style
@teohontech71412 жыл бұрын
Low initial activation force is just one of many factors that produce good drawing performance. The other important feature is whether it can detect changes in pressure when applying minimal pressure and that is where Apple Pencil is good, and you can see that with quick strokes that start thinner, become thicker, then tapers smoothly as the pen lifts. There are pens with low IAF that can draw thin lines, thicker, but can't go back to becoming as thin. Active stylus will have no unnecessary lines because there is pen mode (strict palm rejection) where lines can only be made by the pen. There is no way to introduce stray strokes even if you want to. There are measurements, and then there's real world performance.
@马永军-h6y2 жыл бұрын
@@teohontech7141 You should try to buy a better EMR stylus, because the pressure sensor of the EMR pen is on the pen. For example, the HP zbook x2 stylus is the best wacom EMR pen with pressure sensor that Samsung can use, with performance close to that of wacom propen2. We have tested that under the default pressure curve in the clip studio paint program, the change control of the lightest pressure sensitivity of a 600 pixel pen g brush is significantly better than that of applepencil.

My experience as an artist, go for Samsung. I've Samsung Tab S7+ as well as surface pro and the working experience with Samsung+dex+S Pen is amazing and I dont think I ever leave it for Surface or iPad. But the surface is not as impressive as you think simply because windows is not the right OS for a small tablet. It lags and the experience is noticeably less enjoyable compared to Samsung. The ipad (the one I tried belongs to my friend) is really weird in file management and multi tasking. It does not have anything like Samsung dex so you can never truly use it as a laptop. The pen also feels like you are scratching on a glass surface and it does not feel natural. However the available apps on App store are much more than google play for an artist. I''m going to replace my Surface Pro 6 with Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 13 inch model which has also a fanless mode and therefore a longer battery life if needed. As it comes with the S Pen included and the keyboard while weighting less than the others with keyboard, I believe it to be the better option for me. I have also the S8 Ultra. Thank you for the review man! I'm an Artist / 2D Game Artist too, and I'm still doing my research between Tablets vs a 'professional tablet' like Huion Kamvas / Wacom Cintiq. I'm leaning heavily towards tablets right now. Cintiq 16 with Touch is mad expensive - 2500CA$ (Canadian), and these tablets are half that price 1200-1400CA$. Cintiq requires a wall socket and USB-C, must be powered at all times, not standalone, requires a decently powerful machine to render the 4k monitor, if you have limited desk space it's too much of a hassle to use a mount / push your keyboard aside, can't have cozy art sessions like sitting on the couch / bed and drawing. Overall I think a Cintiq would make me draw less vs one of these tablets. As you mention, Samsung has windows live streaming, and can be connected to Windows and used with Photoshop! It uses WiFi, and no wires. The implementation is still rudimentary, so everyone mentions that a 15$ software called "Super Display" works much better and responsively, with very minimal lag. I love the display of the Samsung over the other two. The thin bezel looks so nice. I like widescreen too, since I make games for PC in 16:9, and as a plus, could also watch videos / anime without scaling issues. Lastly, I hear that Tab S9 / S9 Ultra will be revealed and ready for pre-order this month. Do your own research, but this could mean a better device, or the S8 Ultra going on clearance. Thank you for your great videos. My intuos broke recently, and you've really helped me become informed before buying anything.

Great comparison video. Funny how everyone gives their subjective opinion. The Surface is clearly better car it can also be a laptop, the iPad is clearly better cause it's the best tablet. Truth is they are all great devices with pros and cons and how good they are and what's best depends on what your priorities are... what other devices you have etc. I am glad I can afford to have them all and get the best of each
@astephup2 жыл бұрын
If someone broke two of the tablets but you get to choose the two that get broken. Which tablet are you keeping?
@_Digitalguy2 жыл бұрын
@@astephup It's not a straightforward answer, since they are not specced equally. The S8 ultra is the maxed out 16GB RAM version, while the surface is the 8GB and the 12.9 iPad pro is 4GB version. So as they stand I would keep the ultra, simply because it's the most expensive (to repurchase). Now suppose they all have 16GB RAM and 1TB like (that's the minimum to get a 12.9 M1 iPad pro with 16GB RAM), the iPad 12.9 and the Surface pro 8 would both cost around $2000 with the respective keyboards (the surface pro would be a bit more, but not too far) and the ultra would be 1400 (but with 512GB, there is no 1TB option). At this point the choice is between the pro 8 and the iPad pro. I would take the iPad pro simply because I have already several Windows devices (including surface book 3) with 16GB RAM and a desktop with 32GB while my other iPads are not as well specced. However, if that had to be my only device (not Windows / Macs) then I'll pick the surface pro because it can do it all, despite its shortcomings... As you see, you first need to align the specs and then take into account your other devices before you can give an answer....

@teohontech71412 жыл бұрын
These are all battery powered and don't have to connect to any computer. Main advantage of Wacom is you can use it with desktop software and pen is slightly more accurate and sensitive compared to the pens that come with all these tablets. Ultimately, I recommend you choose based on the software you want to use.

Still, apple pencil is the best experience for notes. Feels quite natural. Samsung Notes is the sencond one, very nice and sweet, but I have found some issues when writing in the borders of the screen, there is a drift. Then Windows tablets seem to be the best choice in general, but I could not test the microsoft pencil, and in other pretty recent laptops like lenovo yoga 7, the pencil experience on windows apps is not quite fine at all. It is great for most people, but I definitely don't enjoy using pencil on it. I enjoy using pencil on iPads and Samsung tablets but not in windows. Maybe I should try surface pro 8-9. It is a pitty there is no device for everything when they have the power and hardware to do it. Ultimately, yuo end up buying an iPad just to use it for handwritten notes and so. 1000$ for a digital paper sheet...

Mine is very obviously a hardware defect. The flicker is most obvious when displaying gray background. Mine also has the issue where the bottom surface of the glass at the flicker area has a white brushed texture. Weird. If your flicker is very obvious, it's likely a hardware fault and should be under warranty. Many of the old Surface Pros I've tested have flicker problem. If I am buying a tablet I would want the best and that is the iPad, and that can be easily bought with 20% off now in the UK. I need a tablet with a great keyboard as that is my focus and the Apple keyboard is the best by some way. I would never buy a Windows Tablet just for tablet use, and instead would get a good laptop to compliment my tablet choice to avoid compromises. So the SP8 is more for a workflow around laptop use and minimal tablet work. The Ultra is just too big for me, so comparing the Tab S8+ would be better and that is a solid device and if it had a great keyboard option (backlit and not floppy) would run the iPad close. Samsung needs to maybe make a bit of effort there, even though it took Apple sometime to work it out, Samsung should be better in 2022. But that is my subjective needs and others may priorities other factors. Thanks!
@PhazonBlaxor2 жыл бұрын
What I hate about iPad keyboard is how chunky it is. iPad loses all thickness and weight advantages compared to SP8 at that point, considering the keyboard is almost as thick and heavy as SP8 itself - it becomes thicker than Macbook Air with the keyboard, which is kinda ridiculous for a tablet that I need to carry around quite often. Which tablet is the "best" really depends on what you expect to do with the device, iPad is great for drawing and general media consumption surely. I personally need a tablet that can do much more than draw though; develop games for Android, iOS and iPadOS on Unity and/or Unreal Engine, full Adobe software suite, Davinci Resolve for occasional video editing (beats Premiere Rush 100-0!) Asperite for pixel art, Audacity for sound edits, etc. So the best tablet to me is easily SP8, and it can also replace my old Macbook Pro, Samsung Tablet and even desktop PC and gaming consoles with eGPU attatched. It offers crazy versatility that iPad lacks and is really a 4-in-1 device for me.
@andyH_England2 жыл бұрын
@@PhazonBlaxor Yes, I agree with all you said, it is very subjective, and for me, a good keyboard is essential and although it adds weight and thickness, that is a small price to pay for a better typing experience.
@PhazonBlaxor2 жыл бұрын
@@andyH_England Totally agree. If you prefer the typic experience on the iPad keyboard and can do away with iPad itself, it's an amazing device. I personally prefer the keyboard on SP8 though, it feels really good to type on. Just not a huge fan of the trackpad, I'm way too used to the trackpad on MB Pro and as we all know Apple makes the best trackpads hands down.
@SourStrawberrys2 жыл бұрын
The iPad OS is too restricting to be anywhere close to the best tablet. That is a myth. It isn't even the best at multitasking yet. The other two tablet is by far better at that. The iPad is too expensive to not to at least excel at that.
@SourStrawberrys2 жыл бұрын
@@andyH_England Adding weight defeats the purpose of it being a portable device. The keyboard for the Surface pro works great, is back lite, has responsive tough pad and is most importantly light weight. To have something thin and lightweight it is going to be more flexible/flimsy. That is just common sense.

If you already have an HP laptop (or whatever the laptop) , you can just buy a Wacom in the new cheap range called "One By Wacom" (around 70 euros, so, a bit more in dollars). BUT... be very sure to purchase the MEDIUM (M) size. With the Small it's terrible in all the tablets. Is pretty good enough for people starting, and better than many cheap alternatives. Use it with the HP and this way you train hand-screen coordination. If you can, purchase PaintTool SAI 2, (around 55 euros) because that app will allow you to work in big canvases and large brushes even in very low end laptops. This means the experience painting is going to be fluid no matter what, in that app. And that is very important. Another one, a bit more complex and not as incredibly good in optimizing for hardware (but still very good on laptops) is Clip Studio Paint (also around 50 bucks). If can't purchase any app (but I really recommend it) you can then just use free apps. Among those I mostly recommend Krita. It might go slower in your laptop, but if you really really really can't buy an app, then go with it. Another tablet that could work for you, but is a bit more expensive, is the Wacom Intuos Medium(M). Yes, after defending the alternatives for years, I've gone back to recommend Wacom no matter what. Simply put, the pen control and accuracy is that much better. But you have a not too terrible option in XP-Pen Deco Pro MEDIUM (again, don't pick the SMALL model). Training with a classic tablet will make you more adaptable if get contracted by a company which does not use Display-tablets (like Cintiq). But if you try and there's no way for you to draw in a classic (this is more related to patience during years, as IMO everybody can get used to it) then you can go to a cheap display tablet. The Wacom Cintiq (non pro) 16" is what I would recommend. The 22" would be my best advice, but then you go to a 1000 euros purchase, and surely that's to much for someone starting. The 16 model is at an ok price. For a cheaper model, but never smaller than 16 inches screen, you could buy a XP-Pen of 16 inches, the smaller model they might be selling. Again, strongly recommend Wacom, much better. IMO, the greatest value here would be using your HP laptop + "One By Wacom" (not "The One", which is a 13" display tablet) MEDIUM + PaintTool SAI 2. If you can afford it, the top best would be Your laptop + Wacom Intuos (non pro) MEDIUM (M) + PaintTool SAI 2. The laptop option has tremendous advantages as can coordinate with very high end pro software, have more compatibility with professional software in general. Can truly calibrate the screen colors later on, etc. The one thing that is not great at all, is pretty bad, is that laptops tend to have terrible screens. Not the case with Apple laptops, and also, some modern laptops do support 100% sRGB, If it says so in your laptop specs, then you are lucky! and quite setup. Much later on, after some years of basic art training, you might want to connect the laptop to a half decent desktop monitor, very easy by laptops HDMI, USB-C or Display ports, a monitor that you can then calibrate its color by hardware. But as that calibration is a science on its own, typically just having a monitor that supports "100%" sRGB (and I recommend that you set the "sRGB mode" in the on screen menu; kind of is a trick for those not knowing how to calibrate a monitor, to have at least some decent color to work with). For drawing on the go, I echo what others say : Samsung Galaxy tab S7 *FE* is the best value. A big screen and big surface area are much more important than people think. The colors accuracy situation is best out of the box in the iPad Pro, but it is a tad expensive. Samsung tablets... you do need to set the colors in settings in the "natural" setting, but that's just about it, can't do a lot more, but serves very well for someone learning and even doing commissions. Indeed, the Samsung S7 FE is surely gonna have a better screen than your laptop. Altho some laptops form last 5 years DO have amazing screens. In Android, I can recommend tools like Infinite Paint, Ibis Paint, Artflow, Medibang and Art Rage. Not in this particular order. Indeed, Art rage is probably the most professional of them. Realize that you only need to be comfy with one of them, so I list them all so that you can try and see which fits better your preference. If you hadn't a laptop already, I'd very much would recommend Surface Studio pro 8 (not the 7. The pen is WAY better, they fixed everything in 8). With the pen and keyboard , that is. So, yep, some conclusions : Laptop + "One by Wacom" Medium + PaintTool SAI 2 Samsung S7 FE if it really really has to be a tablet (I can only see that if portability requires a very light thing). Also if you need to paint "over the line", just like in traditional paper, and don't want to train with a classic digital tablet (which I recommend). If money (for this quantity) wasn't an issue, I recommend having BOTH solutions. The first for bigger and serious projects, the second as a very good solution on the go (I have it, btw). The laptop solution is by very far the cheapest, as u already have a laptop. Also, the one you can scale to more serious work later on. Specially if at home you connect the laptop to a better monitor (with better color accuracy than most laptops, with some brilliant exceptions) , than you already have your desktop studio. And still, the laptop and a medium-size Wacom tablet is still sth that fits on a side bag or back pack; it's pretty portable. Working long sessions, for long hours, it is much better a laptop (indeed, for that best is a full desktop PC) + a decent 22-24 inches monitor. You will draw much better and better pose. Some people even just purchase an extra keyboard and mouse , but desktop ones, and hook the laptop with them and a desktop monitor. Then, the experience is same than with a desktop. If you tell me here what exact model is your HP, I can easily tell you how good is its screen for drawing (as if it's already 100% or 90% sRGB then it's WAY good to go for someone starting, Even if it's the crappy 45% sRGB, to learn how to paint and draw, you can be fine). Also to tell you which software it can run. Unless the laptop is very recent and large amount of RAM, Photoshop 2022 might run slow in most mainstream laptops. But PaintTool SAI 2 works great even in very old laptops and PCs. Clip Studio will work very fine (just not is super old laptops like SAI does), as well. You young people have now a lot of options that were impossible in my time, hehe. For digital art. As remember: to paint on a large paper or canvas with acrylic paint (special for fine art, not regular wall paint, lol) is way cheaper (oils are more expensive and difficult to handle, even if it's the best technique), or gouache paints if that's easier for you... and trains you the same or more. And does not have to be one thing or the other (traditional vs digital), you can do both. There's a ton to learn with only cheap paper and any pencil, before you can say "hey, if I can't paint digital, I can't do art". A lot of the basic stuff can be trained and mastered with only a pencil and paper. Some pros I know only touch the PC to scan (and do some levels or hue fast corrections in Photoshop or Affinity Photo) their outstanding colorful illustrations made fully in acrylics or oil paints. So, there's that. :) I hope it helps.
