Iraqi Forces Take Back al-Nuri Mosque

West Mosul, Iraq - As Iraqi military recaptured the al-Nuri Mosque Thursday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory in the long fight against ISIS. Retaking the mosque was symbolically important - ISIS used the site to declare a so-called caliphate in 2014 - and Iraqi forces have fought a grueling battle to claw back lost territory in the three years since.
VICE News' Ben Anderson has been following the Iraqi Army’s painstaking fight against the terror group, as they trying to cut the route between two of ISIS’s last remaining positions in west Mosul: the al-Jamhuri Hospital, which gives ISIS snipers a huge military advantage, and the old city, where most of the remaining fighters are hiding among civilians as they take their brutal last stand.

The Iraqi government soldiers are more competent and professional than any other arab fighters I’ve seen, the gunner was in complete control of his weapon, he fired bursts instead of spraying blindly. The soldier who fired his M16 down the alley was using his sights and laying down accurate, steady, semi-auto fire. Amazing, I wish the Afghan forces were this good!

Yes, the US put SOME effort into improving the Iraqi army but all of that went to waste because of the Iraqi government that was created by the US. If the US has taken time to think about rebuilding the country after invading ISIS wouldn't have happened. And what you are saying is not true. US did NOT invade Iraq to create a democratic thriving state, the us invited Iraq because they didn't like how Iraq was becoming powerful and they saw Iraq's expansion as Germany's expansion before WW2. The main points I'm saying is 1) the US did not invade Iraq to improve the country or freedom of Iraqi people 2) The us did not know how to build the country after invading that is why the war cost 2 trillion dollars 3) Iraq hasn't been improving in the last decades because of the IRAQI government that was created by the US 4) YES the US tried to improve the Iraqi army but they didn't train the full army, only a fraction have been trained probably. Yes, I am one of the fighters in this fierce battle in the province of Mosul and I was in charge of the snipers faction. The terrorists were using explosive devices and car bombs, and they used mosques and holy places as a safe haven for them. They expected their survival and their victory would be achieved in this way, then we used elaborate plans to liquidate them with minimal human losses and we, the Special Forces men, did it. Hands down, my favorite Vice reporter. The amount of time he’s spent on front lines is incredible. Notice how he barely even blinks an eye when shots are fired or air strikes land? He’s scarified his nerves and now has PTSD due to all his amazing footage/reporting on the front lines of the fight against Isis. The way he interacts with locals, remembers everyone’s names and families, learned much of the language and culture beyond what was just “necessary” put him in a league of his own. I’d be willing to bet that his time spent on front lines exceeds many of the troops that have done tours out there. He’s just as much a hero as any of the soldiers fighting. Ben Anderson, IMO, is a legend among reporters covering the fight against Isis.
