All of them are essential, actually! However, I would say: 1. AR15 in 5.56 2. Glock pistol in 9mm 3. Shotgun or PCC. 4. 10/22 or a .22LR caliber rifle.

I would have to agree with you the most common rounds are by far .223/5.56 9mm 12ga and everyone needs a .22lr in both a rifle and handgun for training purposes and in a bad situation to gather food cheaply and with reduced sound report.

@@Extra_Ordinary_Gary The problem is, the more successful a gun channel becomes, the greater their financial means and sponsorships become and it gets to the point they can afford to buy or are given very expensive firearms most people won't be able to get. So you get less and less coverage of low budget and middle budget items on more established channels over time. In 2012 most of the channels were much smaller and of more modest means.

I have tons and tons of training when I was in the marines with my rifle, BUT for some reason I gravitate towards my 12 gauge for my main gun. I just love the versatility of it. At the same time I just love all guns.

@little drane With my experience in Afghanistan blowing through ammo was a pretty normal thing to do because of having to give covering fire while shooting and moving to a better position. Its just as easy to shoot out your ammo no matter what firearm you use. I personally fire and train with shotguns more and in a given SHTF situation I will not be in a militia or trying to be an army of one my goal is to evade and become a ghost as best as possible. I live in the least populated state in america so the chances of someone hearing my shots are really slim out here.

I'm not saying that I will live forever through out a crisis as the one you might be thinking but it's worth a shot but just like doing anything risky in life ie combat deployments or trying to live in chaos here you have to realize that you might not make it through but you might as well try. Its not going to go as planned and never will everyone should know that.

Paul Harrel recently covered 12ga wax slugging with bird loads , and their effectiveness. So those cheap bird loads are not completely useless for home defense in a pinch. And never forget the cut shells 😉😉 We still miss you Barry. Cheers boys, stay safe.

I bought a svarog slug mold for lyman slugs. You can take and empty the bird shot out, melt it down, repour it as slugs and put em back in the shells for about 20 cents a rd. Im acurate to about 60 yds with em before they start to drop.

I watch alot of toafleaduremouse and the lyman slug seems to be the winner for accuracy overall so i went with it. Poured 200 rds and came out with a little extra lead from 1 1/8 oz heavy load winchester wesern 12 guage rds. Its super economical

Yes, and no.... As stated in a separate comment: Respectfully disagree on sling for home defense... if strictly for indoor use, it may not be needed or actually be a hindrance. A bedside AR in an apartment, for example, a sling could possibly get in the way more than anything else. However, for a potential indoor/outdoor long gun where you live on a couple acres, a sling is almost certainly a good idea. All depends on specifics! Generalizations are lazy thinking. One size never fits all.

I got out the Army and I have tried some slings in civilian use and I have 1 only, on a Hunting bolt action rifle cause I have walk to and from the stand.. but I dont sling it all the time I Dont like slings for most long guns.

@Right Round Thank you for the advise. Yes, I am very caution with my guns. However, I am no longer "unsure" like I was when I first shot a gun two years ago. I understand more manual of arms. I know how they operates and learning more and more as time goes on. Dry fire when I have the chance with all the safety steps. Owned a bolt action T/C compass 5.56 and a Mossburg 500 12gauge pump at the start of this year. So far we have added 2 pistols (G43 and M&P shield.45) a CZ Bren 2 in 7.62, and just added a Ruger 10/22.

Living in an apartment, I've completely switched to 1oz # 7 1/2 lead birdshot 12ga 2 3/4" hand loads, loaded a bit on the spicy side. The longest distance in my apartment that I'd have to shoot someone isn't even 5 yards, and under 5 yards, that shot is gonna hit focused like it were a slug, but dump its energy real quick. If any pellets have over penetration, they ain't even going through the first wall they hit. In the highly unlikely event I miss, again, energy gets dumped real fast in the first wall, and would likely be non-lethal coming out. Birdshot's a great home defense load, and anyone who says it isn't devastating at close range needs to get them a rack of pork ribs and shoot it at about 10 feet away. It'll change your mind.

Eric I can respect your idea of using an auto loader but from my experience and others I have talked to go with a pump for reliability. My first shotgun was an 870. My buddy who duck hunted had a semi auto, a Remington 1100 I believe. Every time we went to the range he had an issue with his shotgun. Some people say working the pump can be tricky, I am 6’4” and 290 so working the pump with authority isn’t an issue I guess.

Agreed 100%. I have had zero luck with semi auto shotguns while shooting skeet. Maybe they cycle more reliably with defense loads but I’m jaded at this point. I can put 5 accurately placed shots through my 870 in well under 5 seconds, and it simply doesn’t jam. Did I mention it’s likely half the cost of any reputable auto loader? I’m sure some guys do great with their autos, but I’m sold on pump guns for the foreseeable future.

@@natedog1619 Gas operated shotguns need cleaning and "inertia guns" are actually spring delayed, recoil operated guns so no wimpy loads, if either of these types of shotguns need to be expensive for them to work; you are buying the wrong shotguns, a $200 autoloader will do the job, a $1,000 autoloader will usually make the job feel better or come with extra features, thats all.

My go to is the shotgun but I grew up hunting in the Midwest and have the discipline in using it . Many of my old school police friends pounded it into me that the sound of that 870 getting racked and that big black hole pointed at the problem settled down just about everyone with a clue. Simply put no doubt about it with the AR15 being on the top of this list. I do have two modern equivalents for the handgun & shotgun in my arsenal (Glock 30SF & Rock Island Armory VR80) Two rock solid firearms. yeah just added a box fed shotgun last Jan. 💪🏽The Rock Island Armory VR80 semi, very affordable, very AR like so very easy to run ie (excellent muscle memory) having built several AR's over the years if you know what I mean. Very satisfied with the VR80, lots of fun but treat as a very serious self defense weapon. Complements my 7yr old Mossberg 590A1 well. Also complemented my dinosaur M1911-A1 with a modern Glock 30SF in 45ACP of course, having stockpiled thousands of rds yrs ago along with shit load of 12ga buckshot & slugs. My auto-loader of choice is either a V.E.P.R. 12 or another shotgun that is fed with an interchangeable external magazine. Drop one of the mags out and pop another one in. There are also frangible slugs as well. As for my preferred AR pattern rifle caliber that would be 6.5 Creedmore or .308.

For shotgun loads in apartments and mobile homes I found #4 bird shot a great round in both 12 and 20 Guage guns. When you factor the short ranges in from those two types of homes it's deadly with minimal over penetration. Fired from a full choke makes it even better and safer. In my mobile home 15 yards is the longest shot possible and that's well within the lethal range of the larger bird shot such as #4. And if you can get it in your area, look for Rio shotgun ammo, loaded hotter than Remington or Winchester. Made in Texas so for me it's sold everywhere except big box stores which is fine with me.

I'll also note, as an apartment dweller my considerations are the same. It's not valid, speaking for myself, to take a potential shooting situation outside of my known tactical environment. Birdshot to Buckshot to Slug, or whatever order of shells fit for you. I totally get the notion that my surrounding apartment dwellers have to be considered if a home defense encounter happens. It's pretty sobering when thinking about over penetration.

I more than likely would just grab the AR if I needed more power, I use speer soft points and they expand the second they make contact and stays in one piece. My first gun was a .410 shotgun, but in my area we were more likely to shoot a pheasant than crackhead. For that reason, I would have to recommend a Taurus Judge. Self defense requires less than six rounds 99% of the time. It fires both .410 and .45 slugs. There is more reliability and safety in a revolver. Keep in mind though, my idea of a warning shot is the first one aimed at the navel.

Can you guys do a longer video on the 5.56/.223 conversion options? I've been looking at AR-10s because I'm more interested in hunting with the AR, but a good one is fairly expensive. It sounds like you can get similar results when converting the AR-15. My state is one of those where you need a higher caliber to hunt deer, so I would definitely need the conversion kit on the AR-15 to make that work. That said, I would really appreciate a video on how to properly cycle uppers for the AR-15 to go back and forth for hunting purposes and home defense.

For a shotgun that overcomes your concern about low round count and slow reloading, you should look at the IWI Tavor TS12 15+1 12 ga. bullpup (28.34" OAL, 18.5" barrel). And it has 2 loading ports that can be refilled without interfering with its firing (since there would be a STRAIGHT FED loading tube forward of and on both sides of the trigger). It's a little more costly than most shotguns, but its reliability is excellent, and there's no better CQB or home protection shotgun.

Ive been touting the benefits of a 20ga for years . Lighter weight with nearly the power of a 12ga . My 88 year old grandpa , my 70 year old mom and my 17 year old neice can shoot a 20ga better than a 12ga. Both gauges can be readily had , but when things get tighter, the 12ga will dissapear off the shelves before 20ga does .

S&J Hardware in Ontario, Canada has a barrel brace that clamps between the barrel and the extended magazine tube. There is a bayonet stud on the bottom to clamp an M-9 or an M-7 bayonet on your 870. Must have a Remington extended magazine or a S&J Hardware magazine tube. These have that plug that looks like a wine bottle cork. The bayonet clips on the bayonet stud and the hilt surrounds that magazine plug in the front. Plus, the clamp bolsters the weak magazine tube at the muzzle area. Get the full wrap clamp. The other goes around half of the circumference of the mag tube and barrel.

I have certain tools I carry in my truck. My truck is not a city truck. I have fence stretchers, a shovel, an axe, a bow saw. a 4 foot jack, fence pliers, fire, a blade and a rifle. There is generally a rolled up tarp in the toolbox, too. Everything I would need if I get stuck out in the pasture and have to spend the night. All I deer hunt with now and for the past 5 years is an ar15 started with a 16” 223/5.56 which worked just fine 62gn federal fusion or 62gn core lokt (and a bunch more load) work fine. Then I went to a 300 blackout but didn’t like the reduced range now I have a 12” 16” and 18” 6.5 Grendel and it absolutely will get the job done on white tail at pretty extended ranges for hunting. Also got the 16” ks47. Still keep the 223/5.56 around for bad times but I love my grendels and the new 6 arc would probably make a good hunting round too.

Love my Sig P365XL with the RomeoZero on it. Yes AR is a great platform and can swap out uppers. Just be sure that you don't go to short on that upper or you will have an SBR.
