50 years ago I would have chosen a 4”, 44 mag. Today being older I would chose an ar-15 with 14 1/2” barrel with 10 mags. Can add a .22 lr bolt.

@@M240-q5j EXACTLY what I came here to say! I don’t get why people don’t think of this more. Get two guns in one really, with a lot smaller footprint. Personally, I’m thinking a WWSD (What Would Stoner Do) build, a CMMG conversion kit (I need to see if it’ll fit in the buttstock compartment, if it does that’d be even better), a muzzle device that allows for a quick attach/detach of a can, a can of course, and some Aguila 60 grain sniper subsonics. My thinking is, those rounds will work a lot better and be more accurate with the typical twist rate of a 556 than a lighter 30-40 grain 22 projectile. Plus, being stupid quiet and delivering more energy on target than most 22 subsonics. Just my thoughts, not sure how well it’d all work in practice.

Excellent choice! I have two CMMG conversions and they are well worth there weight for the price. I agree with Bear. 22 for personal defense. No. I have seen the thick cardboard, like what a washer and dryer come in, stop a 22 round at 25 yds. Not good. For varmit control and small game procurement, yes. But to have the capability to do varmit control then back to personal defense in under a minute one cannot go wrong with the CMMG conversion set up. But spend the extra money and get the Bravo Elite kit. The standard Bravo only comes with one mag. The Elite comes with three mags for like $40 to $50 more. Well worth the extra.

The 16" is nice for in and out of vehicles and buildings, but end of world? I have to argue the 20" AR platform with a lpvo. I run 45g HP projectiles in my .223 and fps wise is kicking at 3800fps, not a plate I have yet to shred, the 16" comprises too much fps. 100% I keep a cmmg 22 conversion in my go bag.

I would choose the 12 gauge mossburg 590 pump action. It can be used to hunt birds, rabbits, bear, deer and self defense. Just depends on how you load the shells. You can also load the shell with black powder if you need to.

12 gauged pump shotgun. You can kill everything from birds in flight to grizzly bears. Many load options and choke options. Reloading shotgun shells is way easier and more forgiving that rifle or pistol ammo. Also, you can use almost anything as shot with good results.

For a SHTF situation, hands down a drilling. All the diversity of shot including any shell length, mini shells, and cut shot plus a rifle round. Plus being a breakdown style shotgun, it is super reliable. Not the best for force protection, but long term hunting, nothing beats it.

Here is a question for you guys, since you touched on the dilemma of mission specific weapons. You could even make a series on this topic. I would like to know all the possible scenarios after SHTF and the weapon or kit you would carry. So far I only hear you guys talk about what one gun you would carry if bugging out or bugging in. One example would be I’m bugging in, but now I have to venture out for whatever reason, so what do you take? Another, bugging out and now have to recon a town you just came up on. What do you take? Another, days after civil unrest, need to go out and see what resources are available. Low key light or armed to the teeth heavy? A lot of alternate scenarios surrounding bug in or out.

5.56 for all basic engagements and food purposes. No shots past 2-300 yards, anything further is inviting attention and possible tail. 5.56 to bug out of the bug in location. .308 to DMR in the event of tail bringing trouble to bug in location. Upon, rolling out after force on force pull bolt carrier from .308 stash if time alots for it. Or separate.308 upper with me and lower with another with spread load of ammo. Everyone has 5.56 with full load out plus.

The likelihood that you're ever even going to shoot at anything outside of even 50 yards in a SHTF situation is EXTREMELY low. WHY would you? If it's that far away, it most likely isn't an immediate threat, or you can easily get away from it.... Most hunting kills are inside 50. Actually per P&Y record book, the average whitetail kill is 19 yards. Less than 5% are over 40. That being considered, I'll never leave home without my 12 gauge.

I agree with them. There will be stuff laying around, and if you're on your own homestead or land anyway, I'm sure you'd have plenty of back up guns. But if I was on the move, I'd definitely take a 5.56 AR. Like the 12 gauge, it can be a versatile hunting gun, and it's lethal for 2 legged pests. Rounds are available, and now "fairly" inexpensive, and you can carry multiple magazines on your person. It'll take care of anything you want dead and you can make them compact.

I would take my AK, so long as concealability is not an issue. I've got a cheap but durable flashlight on it, a solid stock and pistol grip, both with storage compartments, and the 7.62x39 takedown power. I only have about 700 rounds for it currently. If gun weight and ammo weight were a problem, I'd go with a 9mm Ruger PC Carbine. I do know that the simple solution to this common debate, whatever you are best at using. You could have the "best" tactical super expensive AR, but the old mosin you take to the range all the time will serve you better.

AK47 is a good choice, but 556 ammo is lighter weight and the AK47 isn't a standardized platform like the AR15 so if you ever needed to replace a part you would likely need to do some gunsmithing to get the part to fit and function properly. You don't have that problem with the AR15. Choosing a 9mm carbine to save weight doesn't give you much ballistic advantage over a 4" 9mm handgun like the Glock 19 and it likely weighs 4-5 times more than the handgun. In case you didn't know 556 ammo is lighter weight than 9mm ammo so if you're wanting to save weight AND have real rifle ballistics the AR15 is the better choice. Those are just some of the reasons why it's America's most popular rifle. Another big reason is the modularity of the gun being able to push out 2 pins and swap out the entire upper to a different caliber. If you wanted to do some big game hunting or needed grizzly bear defense you can swap out the upper to shoot 450 bushmaster or if you wanted to hunt small game with 22lr you can swap out the bolt to the CMMG one.

I owe my life to a Mossberg 500A. I have hunted successfully everything from crows with birdshot to bears with slugs. My Grandpas and Dad carried 12 gauge pumps from snowy Europe, the burning Pacific and the wet jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam. Zero problems getting the job done. With proper training a slug will reach a few hundred yards and still pack a punch. Plus the cases upon cases of various 12 gauge ammo properly stored I have with replacement parts, I already made my choice years ago.

It's too heavy, try running with one and not hating yourself. The most important skill other than the firearm is reloading, which gets ignored alot. Reloading can recycle your brass, just stash gunpower & primers. Bullets you can cast from junk you find. Revolver Is the best over all weapon. Can do basically every good enough, if you can reload , you can even turn your revolver into a mini shotgun

Ive logged a lot of miles hunting and a break open is about the lightest long gun available. And in a survival scenario I think a shotgun is far more valuable than a rifle cartridge. Especially, when you factor in the 12ga adapters.

I'd want my AR. The sheer availability of parts and ammo makes it my to choice. I'm assuming in an end of the world I'm going to need to hunt, fight, scavenge. I'm thinking borderline Fallout type of scenario where there's so much violence and uncertainty. Assuming a lack of violent gangs in that scenario seems a dangerous misunderstanding of people. I've got a lot of experience with it The AR platform so that's my ideal platform.

Depending on where you live. A shotgun is a very good tool in bear country. A 22 or a 5.56 is a little light for defense against bears. Also with a shotgun hit probability is greater in a static position defense with # 4 or 00 buck. 👍😊🇺🇸✝️

@@JoshSmith-mm1fi if you put enough rounds into any animal you will eventually kill it with a 5.56. The story that comes to mind (true story) is of I believe a Marine Patrol in Viet Nam. A Bengal Tiger threatened the patrol. A Marine or Soldier dumped 17 rounds of ball into the tiger before stopping same. A tiger weighs about 400 lbs. A bear weights, depending on type from about 400-2000 lbs. Also a bear has about 6” of skin. That is why a bear wins on videos the actual fight with tigers. A good friend of mine was a former state trooper & then became a hunting guide. He has seen several bears killed. If the bear is aware of where it is being shot from usually the bear will charge. With bear’s head lowered in a charge they have a very thick skull & a steep angle for deflection of a projectile. My friend states he has seen bears take up to 5 rounds of 375 H&H before stopping. Also they can run up to 35 mph. My little old body can only run about 7 mph on a good day. So if I was hunting bears I would carry 105 mm. But that is not practical so I have to settle on 7.62 or larger. One last story another friend of mine (now deceased, GOD rest his soul) used 8 rounds of 300 WM to put down a brown bear mauling his father. He was right next to the bear shooting same. I would definitely rethink that a 5.56 is adequate in bear country. 👍😊🇺🇸✝️

My Maverick 88 security, it's a common 12 Guage, you can fire an array of different types of munitions, it can be used for hunting anything that walks crawls or fly's, and home defense and if you run out of ammo you can use it as a club. It is easy to use and maintain , easy to teach someone to use, you don't need to be a Marksman to hit a target.

I have to agree with the 12 gauge and 5.56. My go to is the 590 shockwave with a pistol grip and arm brace, because it has a variety of different shells I can use for a variety of different scenarios and its not very heavy for a 12 gauge.

Interesting story of the racoon. Heard their heads are so strong, but never shot one. I am a farmer, when we slaughter pig or cattle, we use a .22, from 3 to 10 yards, never had a problem. In fact, as i child i saw my dad did the same, with the crappy .22 rounds back then, also never had a problem. Looking forward to test my .22 on a racoon😄

I would take a 357 magnum. It can be scoped. It will take shot shells, 38 special, 38 +P, and various levels of 357 magnum from light to heavy. Very easy to carry. Ed Mcgivern shot them 600 yards, so that’s it. I cannot carry a long gun every day conveniently everywhere I go. It will also, properly loaded, kill everything at proper distances. PS: it can also shoot 38 super, in an article I read, I think, Sandow, many years ago.

.300 BO 7.5" good prepper round. Recycled. 556 brass with .308 rounds. .30 caliber is a great knock down round for large game for food and defense. Wide range of bullet size.

My .308 M1A Loaded with boiled linseed coated walnut stock and my stripper clips for my 5rd flush mag. Sidearm is my 10mm 1911. If needed, my 2 20rd mags for my M1A.

I have a Remington 700 308, a Remington 870 12 gauge, a Bushmaster AR 223, a Glock 21 and a Ruger 44 magnum Redhawk. It would be hard to say which is best, but the Ruger most likely. I can conceal it and hit out to 100+ yds with it.

The Mossberg shotgun absolutely! It's the swiss army knife of fire arms. As Allen and Jason pointed out, you can kill a squirrel or a bear, or anything in between. Versatility is the key!

Shotgun is the king for versatility, but the ammo is the heaviest and most bulky choice. With an AR15 the modularity of the gun being able to push out 2 pins and swap out the entire upper to a different caliber makes it very versatile too. If you wanted to do some big game hunting or needed grizzly bear defense you can swap out the upper to shoot 450 bushmaster or if you wanted to hunt small game with 22lr you can swap out the bolt to the CMMG one.

Awesome question... toughest one of the day. But in the end your mind is your best weapon. I like the 22... why.. indestructible, dependable can carry a bunch. But man, I love the shot gun do it all argument as well. Just a little tougher to lug around all the ammo if you had to hike... but still good. The M4... hard to beat this one. It is a do it all gun.. Surprised no one was sold on a nice hand gun.... great concealed. easy to carry... effective.. Looks like I will have to go with at least one each... lol

You need to factor in reloading if bugging in is an option, and in that case .223 in carbine makes enough sense as one can stock pile some bullets, primers and powder and have shoot-ability for a very long time. 16 inch barrel with a 1 in 7 twist with suppressor (not an absolute necessity), for reaching out just that little bit further with good enough optics and possible night vision optics a plus. There are also a couple of bullet types and weights available that a 1 in 7 twist will stabilize which will allow slightly bigger targets to be taken with the 223, for example greentips or up to 80 grain pellets in hunting configurations, if you can get them, run of the mill stuff, and light very fast rounds for varminting of all kinds. AR-15 for me all the way (M4 not an option for me as I live in South Africa).

I love all the gun talk and each of your own perspectives, however 5 years or more past the "SHTF" event ammo may be extinct due to many or large engagements to keep you and yours safe and alive. Primitive weapons may be just as viable after that point, more men have died from arrows and edged weapons than bullets throughout history.

I'm going with my 12 gauge bullpup. 18" barrel no bigger than a Mossberg shockwave. Can be shoulder/ aim fired. Have a twenty round drum and ten round mag. Is very reliable and can clear a house easy being that its so short.

Single barrel break open shotgun. More versatile than any other gun. And while you think you need a gun to kill people, that’s fantasy. What you need is a gun that gives you the most choices in getting food. A single barrel break open shotgun gives you the most versatility and when needed can be used as a muzzle loader. Assume you have run out of ammunition, and you will. Shot shells can be re-used indefinitely, hand re-loaded without a press or machined tools and so can the shotgun primers. And with knowledge you can find the components to make both the black powder and the fulminate for the primer in nature. (Yes, I have made both) And in a pinch you can shoot pebbles in place of lead shot or balls.

One thing that comes up a lot in these discussions is the fact that some people worry about defending against greater numbers than yourselves. I am an actual combat veteran who has been in overseas theaters with people trying to kill me. Here is the reality of the situation. There is such a thing as tactical retreat. If you find yourself outnumbered or overpowered you leave that area undetected if possible. You try to avoid greater numbers or greater power if you want to live to fight another day. I was involved in actions that many times the enemy never knew we were there and we left without notice. That is the prudent course of action. If you have a handgun and the other guy has a shotgun you might lose or get lucky. If you have a handgun and the other guy has a rifle you are probably gonna lose. If you have a 5.56 and the other guy has a 7.62 you have a good chance of losing. If you have a handgun or a shotgun or a rifle and the other guy has a sniper rifle and he sees you first you will lose. If you have any type of rifle or handgun and the other guy sees you first and he just has a shotgun you still are gonna lose. I think people can follow my line of thought now. Take what you want and be real good with it and travel carefully. Think about this hundreds of thousands of deer have been taken with a simple bow and no one heard the shot. I have had bad guys in my sights many times and I could not pull the trigger for one reason or another. I would probably be that guy with a good spotter scope or set of binoculars and a simple shotgun or handgun until I could upgrade to something else that fit the job better at that time. I am a very dangerous man with pretty much whatever I have at hand until I can upgrade to something better. Having skills is more important than what you find yourself carrying at the time.

For me it’s a Mossberg 500 shotgun. I can configure it for the situation. I own different shells for small game, big game, or self defense. Rifled Slugs with a changed long barrel that came with the gun will allow me to reach way out if needed. After that, a .22lr for all the reasons listed in the comments.

A .22LR with a suppressor. 10,000 rounds can be bought for a few hundred dollars, you can carry 2,000 rounds and walk all day, you can take deer-sized animals at 50 yards in a pinch, and if needed, bad guys too, all while drawing very little attention to yourself.

I've got a 12 ga, TWO Ruger 10/22s, a .22 WMR bolt action, a 30-30 lever rifle, a .357 lever rifle, an AR 16", several 9mm pistols, and a Red Ryder BB gun from my 10th birthday. They all have their place, and I have the luxury to pick the best tool for the task at hand. But if I could only have one, it would be the AR. Second choice would be the 10/22.

Having looked at this a lot, I’ve come to the conclusion that it depends on the SHTF situation. Different scenarios require different tools, even with jacks of all trades. So much to consider: do I need to conceal? Are there other people? What game is available? Am I close to home or going long distance? How much ammo can I carry? Shotguns are versatile only if you have all the different ammo and chokes. 22lr is low power for bear defense or even deer. .44mag destroys small game. Handguns are hard to hunt with. Rifles are not easily concealable. Break actions suck for fighting. Semi autos are pickier about ammo and maintenance. It’s a matter of what is best for a specific situation.

A bare bones 16" 5.56 ar with a flashlight and forgrip will take you a long way. For myself I'm running a 16" 5.56 with a 1x4 scope. Currently have a modlite on it. I like it pretty well but for you money the surefire dual fuels are the way to go in my opinion. Also if you're someone who's in the air of first thing to buy for any new firearm. Get a solid flashlight first thing. Can't shoot what you can't see. Stay safe out there everyone. Also don't forget some spare parts for your firearms.

This is the easiest question in the world: AR-15 in 556. It's perhaps not PERFECT for anything, but it's PERFECTLY FINE for virtually anything, from moose to squirrels, and from 1 attacker to 10. It's also the most likely to find parts and ammunition for. A 22 would be a fair second choice, but is very weak for self defense.

A combo long gun chambered in .410 and .22lr. You could take down everything from bird to deer. Possibly larger game with an accurate headshot. The rifle and ammo are both lightweight. Something to consider when you’re potentially trekking miles to stalk game.

While I agree that shotguns, and ARs, and 22s are great I wouldn't pick any of them for my one gun to build civilization with. For me it would be a .50 hawken flintlock rifle. I can make powder, shot, buck, ball, and whatever else I need. I can use certain leaves, inner barks, wasp nests, plant fibers, and animal fibers like wool for wading. I can even fix any part of the gun I want with a little knowledge of metal and wood working and flint knapping. Is it perfect, no, but it will still kill anything in north America and pretty much the world with the right powder and bullet pairing.

I would take my combination gun. It's Haenel 8.10, upper barrel is 12cal shottie, lower barrel is .223. It has Zeiss 3-15 scope with qd and back up open sights. Pretty versatile and simple firearm. It was expensive but lasts a lifetime. European thing..

I think a Ruger 9mm PC Carbine would be a good choice for handling most things but my personal favorite is a Marlin Model 94 chambered in .357. Has good range in a long barreled gun and will take care of just about anything out there. Right now .357 ammo is too expensive and hard to get but hopefully that will change before SHTF. Long term dependability would be a top priority too. POMO

I would go with the mossberg mvp in 556, mainly for weight of both the gun and ammo. Living in the upper northeast there are a lot of hills and is very rocky and forested. It'll give me good enough power for 100 yds and less and will not being super heavy also ill allow me to use any AR magazine i might find

That's a really tough question . If I could only own 1 Carbine . It would have to be 13.7" 6mm ARC. It can HANDLE all my applications / requirements for do all be all AR15 . I would pair it with 1-10× , Top Hat 509T , YHM K Can , Cloud Defensive White light , and 2 point sling ..
