Always a good thing to know how to work on your own stuff :) I had been meaning to do this for a while now but got time today to clean out the carb and replace the oil too. Now the generator runs like a top. I had slacked off on running this every month so it needed some TLC Oh and ooops, I meant Varnish from Gasoline not Motor oil!

I have found that with any portable generator shutting off the gas and letting it die is the best way to shut the unit down and keep the gas lines clear.

Thanks for this, did it in the garage in Fresno,TX during the end of hurricane Harvey,we never needed it but it's ready for hunting season. Your vid inspired me to get to it instead of the death and destruction on TV. I pulled the float bowl. Used a copper wire strand rodded out every port and carb cleaner spray,buttoned it all back and 2 yanks then smooth running.

We have a Groban 5600W generator with the B&S Vanguard 9HP OHV engine and it started doing the surging thing and that means it's running too lean. I started feeding it some 'Sea Foam' additive and that is clearing it up. We bought the generator when we moved here in 1997 and I do a test run of it every few weeks. It had it's first real work out in January or 2007 when the power was out in Pahrump for almost 14 hours, I think it used 6 gallons of gas that day. B&S recommends 30W non detergent oil for the engine and I change it once a year. It's electric start, just turn the key unless the 10 year old battery is run down. Then just pull the cord and it starts on the 2nd pull. Stabil in the gas along with some Sea Foam to keep the carb clean and do a test run more often as when the power is out you need it to run perfectly. The only bad thing about this rig it it weights 350# and it's so loud when I fire it up all the birds in the trees take flight.

Iridium242, have you noticed anything around the carburetor that would cause a slight fuel leak. I got one of these recently and had taken it down to replace the recoil start and when I put it back together I notice there is a fuel leak. I am unsure what that little tube directly behind the carburetor is that faces downward but I thought it seemed like the leak was coming down in that area

Nope, no leak in mine, I just checked and I dont even see the tube you are talking about but I will look more in the AM when I have more light.

@@Iridium242 ask my buddy who does Small Engine he said it's just a breather. It seems to leak more when I tip it up on end but there is no leak in the fuel lines

the bolt in the bottom of float bowl has 3 holes(2 on sides,one on top)If any varnish/dirt plugs any of the 3 holes,it won't run.Float bowl will stay full,& then leak gas.

Hi there, Do you know of this generator is a bonded or a floating neutral?
@johnshissler6316

Mine says it’s floating

I have an 1850 Powermate pulse (it's grey instead of red). Mine is floating between neutral and ground AC receptacles also. This is good because it means you could connect it to a transfer switch.

When and how did you add sea-foam? I disassembled the carb on mine and blew everything out with carb cleaner. No passages were clogged. it surges no matter where the choke is and sometimes when the governor goes to full throttle, it just stalls out. Needs starter fluid to start.

I sprayed it into the carb while it was running. Mind was not all that bad, just some surging, I was not sure it was even the carb, I changed out the gas to new gas and it went away.
