A lot of Sonic locations, but not all, have picnic tables outside for people who want to get out of their cars to eat and/or aren't in cars. A very few actually have indoor dining areas. Roller skating carhops used to be a lot more common at Sonic, but they mostly went away starting in the 90s due to insurance. Yes, there is meat in Sonic chili. The onion rings are hand-breaded each morning in each location. But then they're fried, like any other onion rings. I'm astonished that you were able to drink any of the blast through the straw - usually those go out the door with a spoon, and they're eaten like an ice cream dish rather than drunk like a milkshake.

@@debjorgo Yeah, the chili-ized dish (or the chili cheese-ized dish) is a fairly standard American thing. Burgers, hot dogs and fries are the usual bases. As the fast-food empires fight it out with the same fairly limited range of menu items, chili-cheesing has expanded to chicken things and onion rings. The variants of "Cincinnati chili" (a meat sauce with allspice, cinnamon, cumin, clove that nobody from the Southwest or West acknowledges as chili; the flavorings are Balkan, not Mexican) in Ohio are in the same territory: Spaghetti covered with "chili" (a "two-way'); spaghetti+"chili"+cheese (a 'three-way'); spaghetti+"chili"+cheese+onions OR beans (a 'four-way'); spaghetti+"chili"+cheese+onions AND beans (a 'five-way'). We put chili in/on all kinds of things. If you're making nachos at home, canned chili is a quick and dirty way of getting there. Back when I was young (60s-70s) before all the breakfast places got fancy, it wasn't unusual for diners in California and the Southwest to serve chili con carne omelets. And yes, Diane: Chili means meat. In fact, to hear Texans tell it, if there are beans in it, it's *not* chili. New Mexicans disagree, sometimes to the point of visible anger. The rest of us observe with bemusement.

Sonic is an exception with the fries. You don't go to Sonic for fries. You go for the tots (because you can't really get them anywhere else). And cheddar peppers if you like jalapenos. I like cheese tots, personally. The pretzel twists are amazing. The onion rings are handmade in store, not shipped to them frozen, so that's probably the "special" way they're talking about. Every once in a while, they do a frito pie and a frito pie wrap. They're so good. I'm always sad when they go away.

Personally, I'm still a little confused at the idea of eating a corn dog in New York City, a metropolis where you can't go more than two blocks without passing a counter and three food carts where you can get excellent non-corn dogs. I think of corn dogs as something you get on the midway at a county fair, where deep-fried everything is a food category; you don't actively seek them out. Why eat a corn dog, when you can walk up to the guy at the Sabrett's cart or walk into Mike's Papaya or a Nathan's and get one with the works? Is the pull of deep-fried starch really that strong?

All kinds of different dill and sweet pickles, too: Pickled in vinegar, pickled in salt brine, pickled with wide varieties of seasonings/varying degrees of sweetness, pickled for various lengths of time. I like all kinds of pickles, but my absolute favorite is the half sour, which is hard to find outside the New York area; you sometimes find them in kosher-style delis in other cities. It's basically a salt-brined dill, but it's not pickled for very long; it maintains the crispness of the original cucumber, and it has a much brighter, fresher taste than most dill pickles. The more old-fashioned delis in New York City often have a bowl of assorted pickles sitting on the table when you sit down; you take what you want. We have a big deli called Saul's in the famous Gourmet Ghetto in north Berkeley, California that's a straight copy of big New York delis like Katz's on the Lower East Side. They do the pickle bowl thing, because there are enough ex-New Yorkers here that the customers would yell at the management for deviation from the One True Deli Faith (I learned from my Queens-raised father that you can take the New Yorker out of New York, but you can't take New York out of the New Yorker). Saul's has excellent half sours; I think they do them in-house. I'm surprised that Diane's not a pickle eater, seeing that she lives much of the time in southern Spain. I would have assumed that cornichon (the crunchy tart little French pickles) are a standard item along with olives; cornichon are an excellent pairing with hams, salamis, chorizos, pates and other pork-y tapas items, because the sourness offsets the fat. And aren't pickles part of a ploughman's lunch everywhere?

@@garycamara9955 Depends on the food, and I am a hardcore Northern California partisan whose father emigrated from New York, so I used to go back and forth to visit grandparents. I think Italian food is better here, because the common culinary languages here are Italian, Cantonese (with more Chinese regions as time has gone on) and a little Mexican (although LA's Mexican food is much better than ours). They're what everybody grows up eating in restaurants. South Asian and Southeast Asian food is excellent here. But French food is much better in New York, as are Central and Eastern European food. Middle Eastern food, too: Arab, Turkish, Israeli, Persian. Italian deli food is better in NorCal; Jewish deli food is better in New York. About 40 years ago, I once ran into a man at the San Francisco Airport departure lounge who had about eight 3-foot long Gallo salamis in a sack. I asked him why so many, and he said that he was from Long Island NY, and the availability of really good Italian salami was inconsistent there. So he stocked up on the salami for which the Bay Area is famous, because we have the right enzymes floating around in the air for the curing process. I told him that I was desperate for German salamis, which were no longer made in the Bay Area (and even when they were made, they were inferior to the New York products). We came to an agreement, and for many years we would do an occasional swap by mail: I'd send him a few pounds of San Francisco Italian salami (usually from Molinari or Columbus, which are better-tasting than the Gallo), and he'd send me a few pounds of German cervelat or Hungarian Pick paprika salami from Schaller & Weber, a German butcher on the Upper East Side of Manhattan - the old Central European neighborhood.

I have so many great memories of going to Sonic back in the early 80's when I was my Mom's chauffeur as she began her paralegal career. At that point in time, Sonic was mostly a rural restaurant. I always knew what I was going to order; a #3 burger/no cheese, small fries and a large Pineapple shake. As far as I know, Sonic is the only FF place that sells pineapple shakes. They are amazing, especially when a pineapple chunk gets caught in the straw and I have to suck extra hard 🤭to free up the flow.

Funny you should mention. There's a local burger/dog stand in south Berkeley, California called Smoke House. I've been going there for 60 years; my parents moved to the neighborhood just before I was born, and we kept going back there after we'd moved further north. They have about 40 different shake varieties (mostly vanilla ice cream with the flavoring blended in), and pineapple's one of them. There's also several different berry varieties: Strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, boysenberry, even huckleberry (a giant blueberry-like thing you mostly see in Idaho and Montana). Coffee, mocha, mint, both with and without chocolate chips. I should go there tomorrow. Nowadays, it's hard to find weird-flavor shakes because traditional ice cream parlors (where they'd scoop cones and fill cartons, but they also had table service and made shakes and sundaes) seem to have disappeared in big cities. All the newer ice cream places I see these days just scoop very expensive cups/cones of superpremium ice cream. I'm not sure I could name four places in the San Francisco area where I could still go for a traditional 'scoop it into a glass dish and squirt the whipped cream' hot fudge sundae.

In the 60's my dad loved to take the grandkids there for drinks and Sonic put little plastic animals on the rims of the cups which the kids would collect. Sadly, in 2018 they sold out to an Atlanta company who has felt compelled to change everything, including colors and signage. For us Okies, it's now Braum's! Although a lot of us would say it was Braum's first anyway. ;-)

If you liked their plushies, try one with the ice cream in it. By the way, the Sonics I used to frequent were known more for the plushies and ice cream slushies as they serve more of these items than the burgers. Also, their kid's meal menu really isn't the best. The nostalgia atmosphere is awesome too and I used to get out of my car and purposely eat at their outdoor patio area.

Diane, if you've got this opportunity to try different foods around the USA, go for the more local foods, the "mom and pop's" diners. You can get Sonics and Arbys and McDonalds everyplace. Enjoy. Treat yourself to the regional specialties!

I'm not a big pickle person either. I don't dislike them, just not a go to for me. That said, my absolute favorite is the half dill pickle. It has the pickle flavor while retaining the cucumber taste. Unfortunately, they are not easy to come by. If you should ever encounter them in your travels, I highly recommend trying one.

They're commonly called 'half sours' in New York, the epicenter of America's pickling development. The only place I've ever seen them outside New York is in Jewish delis in some bigger cities, usually operated by New York expats. There are recipes you can use to do a decent imitation yourself, since the pickling time is fairly short.

Back in high school (in the 80's) we would go to Sonic and get the limeade slush then put alcohol in it and it's basically like a margarita. They had a special sauce back then for the burgers and it tasted like a Big Mac. Unfortunately, they don't have that sauce anymore. The burgers only cost $1 back then.

I'd always get a frito chili pie at Sonic when I was younger, or occasionally the foot-long hot dog. Nowadays, Sonic just doesn't to be as consistent as they used to be. I had the chicken fried steak sandwich three times recently, and each time it was a little bit different. One was great, another looked really good but was just okay, and the third one was dark and overcooked. And if you're looking for Fun Sonic facts, the first Sonic was in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Their headquarters are now in Oklahoma City. And it really surprises me that they've grown beyond a regional chain. My sister lives in Washington state and they have Sonic there, too. And in Florida, I guess!

A corndog without mustard is a sad thing, but I wouldn't expect an Irish person to know that. You'll note that in the graphic that briefly flashed when she rated the corndog that it was paired with a little bowl of mustard. Lastly, I would be disappointed with a burger, as well, if the pickle were removed and it was cold.
