USA here! Red Velvet Cake is a chocolate cake (made with cocoa) and is artificially tinted red (but color can be left out). It is a recipe that is at least 100 years old. The southern states make some of the best! I live in the north on the west coast but have had it from southern friends and, yes, I believe they do it best!

Mexican food has far more. Northern European food usually has more. No, it's absolutely not true that American food has a higher amount of calories. Unless you're eating from supermarkets all the time and buying chain restaurant food, which every country has. I don't know why I have to keep repeating this. American food is often quite well seasoned and spiced and nutritious enough to to get by with, and what the commenter was referring to was the reactors/tasters tendencies to automatically insultingly sensationalize how afraid they are of "THE CARBS" when the food doesn't have any more carbs than anything they would eat in Ireland or even Asia. The reason Red Velvet cake was originally red was because of the beet root people used in the South as a sweetner because cane sugar was too expensive. So they made a chocolate cake with beet root and it came out with a reddish tint.

Nah , red velvet was made with cocoa powder, buttermilk and vinegar. It's the chemical reaction between the cocoa powder (which contains anthocyanin, a pH-sensitive antioxidant that reacts to acids) and the vinegar and buttermilk. This reaction makes the cake its famous red-tinted color.

+Arlinda Barry I just looked up 7 Minute Frosting and it looks like something I would prefer over regular frosting anyway! Though nowhere even close to the humidity of the South, our days in L.A. get so uncomfortably hot here. This sounds better! The only real cake topping I like is icing made from powdered sugar and lemon juice and rind (on my mom’s lemon cake), or whipped cream. The buttercream style of frostings have always been a bit much for me. Thanks!

As a Native New Yorker who survived and nearly lost several family members to the 9/11 attacks, his "joke" wasn't funny and those offended by we who have been "triggered" will never understand the trauma our state endured thanks to that merciless crime. My aunt worked in tower 2 and she brought her daughter, my cousin, to work that day for a job interview. My uncle was NYPD assigned there that day, my fiance at the time had a job interview near there, and I went to business school a block over. For various reasons, we were all lucky enough to survive. THOUSANDS did not. Police, EMTs, Fire men and women, employees, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters, even a priest all lost their lives in those vicious attacks that day. His "joke" isn't funny. It's a mockery of a great loss and the only reason you find it funny is because you've never been touched by so great a tragedy and I pray that you never are. Shame on him for the insensitivity and the level of disrespect in the comment. Even more shame on the editor of this video for not only leaving the comment in, but for stopping the background music immediately after which only highlights the comment more. P.S. NY is more than what you see portrayed on tv or in movies. Red velvet is a joke and a con. Most people don't know it's just a ton of red food coloring mixed in chocolate cake or when they say blue or any other color velvet is just a ton of the color w/chocolate or white cake. A beet cake is still a chocolate cake but with natural color. Nothing special about it.
