Great summary of first impressions! I recently visited Brazil for the first time and spent 8 days in the Midwest of the country. Mainly in Goiânia, but also visited Brasilia and the touristy (for residents of that region) cities of Pirenopolis and Caldas Novas. I felt pretty safe during the whole trip. Driving there was wild compared to the US, but other than that I never felt in danger. It seemed like cities in America in that if you follow basic precautions and aren’t out late looking for trouble, you’ll be fine. The military police everywhere was unnerving at first, but I got used to it. Brazilians were friendly to me. I had that experience of them speaking a lot even though I was totally lost. My favorite phrases were “Você fala inglês?” And “Não sei, não falo português” LoL The answer to the first question was typically no, so I had to use my broken Portuguese to try to communicate. My favorite part was that everywhere accepted credit card and they had handheld card readers that were so much faster than systems in the US, especially at restaurants Anyway, that’s a long response but I enjoyed seeing somebody else’s first impressions in a different part of the country. Keep up the good work!

Brazilians don't speak English because unlike Europe, here we have a continental area where all people speak the same language. Plus, most of Brazilians live far away from the border with other countries, and all of those countries speak Spanish. So, general people really don't have to speak English in Brazil.

I absolutely love Brazil! We plan to live there at some point in the future. I think that you'll find that the language is easier than it seems at first glace. Try to learn the basics of pronunciation and you'll understand a lot more than you expect. I hope you travel to many parts of Brazil. It's so diverse. We really loved the state Parana and the city Vitoria really stood out to us. The Northeast is amazing too. - *Jon*

I just got back from 10 days in Rio, Fortaleza, and Jericoacoara. It's a fantastic place. We only met one couple from France. Everyone else was from Brazil. There were lots of people on vacation, but all were from Brazil. I think that's why so few people speak any language other than Portuguese.

It just seemed to me that there were few people from other countries, (my impression, maybe not reality) so no need to know English. People from the United States are famous for not knowing other languages, because we don't travel much outside our country, and can't practice what we learn in high school.

Good Day Mates... Great Show... Good Job. I am a Paulista (from upstate São Paulo.) Lived in Buffalo, NY, Philadelphia, San Francisco and now Salt Lake. It is sad when people point out "how dangerous Brazil is... some with direct experience others just hearsay. I've been to 80 countries around the world including places like Bangkok and New Delhi. Over 50 times to Europe and 46 states in the USA. most of Canada. twice around the planet That said, let me tell you I was robbed only once at gunpoint, and that happened in Frankfurt, Germany. I've been to Brazil with American friends several times, and yes... my husband got robbed in Rio once.. Let's remember that in the USA, it is extremely dangerous (due to shooting sprees) at Night clubs, gay and straight, schools (over 20 shooting in 2018 only), churches, movie theathers, shopping malls even Christmas parties (San Bernadino) . if the media were to emphasize all this overseas, then of course the US would have the same reputation.. So thank you for not emphasizing "danger" too much. Here are two mistakes most Americans make about Brazil...#1. They assume we speak Spanish. Here in the USA when I tell them that we speak Portuguese not spanish... some even have the guts to TELL ME, that I am wrong, for they have been taught in school that in South America They speak SPANISH...DUH - end of story. Mistake # 2... some documentaries made by americans about Brazil, state that Brazilians are getting WESTERNIZED. What..?!??? As a Brazilian it never dawned on me that Brazil was EASTERNIZED before. In the USA when they talk about western countries they will even go as far as making Japan a western country before they will accept the fact that Brazil is a western country. What ????? in the world do they get that from? You did not make those two mistakes. Again Great JOB.

Spot on first impressions, I spoke Spanish and it took 6 weeks to get tuned into Brazilian, which is not at all like Portuguese accent. They also use a huge number of words for different types of things. Eg 22 words for pineapple, and a dozen or so for girl ! Brazilians are the best in the world, love them. Get out to some live music.get out of the city !,,,,,

O grande problema é que o inglês não é obrigatório nas escolas e o obrigatório que digo é falar,saber se expressar , saber o que dizer não é obrigatório. Quem sabe algum dia se mudaram e melhorarem o ensino no Brasil, talvez no futuro o inglês será a segunda mais falada no Brasil e se isso acontecer pode ter certeza que o Português será obrigatório para vocês também.

Brazil is bigger than USA without Alaska and Hawaii. São Paulo is bigger than New York, but NY has more Metro stations and lines. SP has the biggest number of buildings of all towns in the World, but NY is much richer, of course. São Paulo has really danger areas with the biggest favelas in the World and where nobody speaks English or even a good Portuguese. Watch out guys. Be careful, ok? Oh, and São Paulo is MUCH MORE safer than Hell de Janeiro. FOR REAL! Seriously. I mean that. Be aware!

So happy to see you two went to Brazil! Many people are scared to travel to Brazil because they hear it is unsafe, but I found that to be the opposite. As long as you are conscious of your surroundings and stay in busy areas, you will likely be fine. If you plan to leave Sao Paulo, you should head north and explore Bahia! I spent two weeks in Salvador this past year and loved the vibe, culture, and food. Have fun!

Nightlife in São Paulo is great! Go to the bars at Vila Madalena and enjoy the nice restaurants in Jardins. As long as you stay at better neighborhoods (Jardins ia one of the most expensive areas of the City, for example) its totally safe to walk around, even at night. You are doing right with Uber, I live in São Paulo and use it on a daily-basis.

Lived in Brasil for 2 years and São Paulo is definitely a working city (as described in the video), but also the most Americanized city in Brasil. That being said, for a more accurate representation of Brasil you need to get away from the big cities and have at least a basic understanding of Portuguese. I never felt insecure during my time in Brasil, but many who rely solely on English or have no experience with South America may be out of their comfort zone.

Lime really takes it to another level. I live in Brasília and the most traditional "pastel cafe" here, called "Viçosa", stopped sending limes along with the sugar cane juice and I just stopped eating there, because for me it just makes no sense drinking it without the limes!

I am from Curitiba. I will say if they come to Curitiba they will get a similar exprience that they got in São Paulo. Curitiba is not bad but is not a tourist city. You can see all the major sites in Curitiba in a day Getting the green tourist line. I also think the language barrier will be worst in Curitiba than in São Paulo because Curitiba is a working city with less multi national and much more smaller than SP. If I was a tourest I would go to Morretes and Ilha do Mel and then go to Foz do Iguaçú or Santa Catarina's beaches. The most touresty área outside of Brazil outside of Rio is the Northeast. But the Northeast have major problems that curitiba does not have is the level of crime is very high. The Northeast have geat potencial to even be richer than the south, they good soil for agriculture because the region is dry, they are the closet point to Europe an ideal place to open industries to export. They have population even though is most are low skilled. But corrupt political oligarch sucks all the money from south maintaining most of the population in poverty. And they are also a tourtesty place. The Northeast should be the richest and most developed region but they are not because of corruption and the Indústria da seca or translating drout industry.

Hey guys! Im from Argentina and i visited brazil almost every year, I think your first impressions are pretty accurate. If you are enjoying San Pablo, you will LOVE other cities. San pablo is BIG but pretty grey and sad compearing to what brazil has to offer! I really recommend visiting Rio d Janeiro, is a beautiful city, where nature and infrastructure are perfectly combined. Zona sul (ipanema, copacabana, leblon) and the city center are gorgeous. And just a few hours away, you have Cabo frio where a boat tpur can take you to the most beautiful beaches in the world. If you want to enjoy a colonial small town, an hour away from cabo frio you have buzios, a lovely place to relax a few days ❤

Cashiers are most likely asking if you want to put your Social Security Number in the invoice. It's something that happens in Sao Paulo state only, as far as I know. The state put this into law to fight tax evasion from businesses, and if you as a consumer register your SSN to the invoice, after a fiscal year has passed, you can deduce a certain amount from a yearly vehicle possession tax, or receive that deduction in cash. Since you don't have a CPF (our acronym for SSN), you don't have to worry. So if you hear a cashier say something like "Say-pay-F" (CPF), just say no, and proceed with payment.

Hey guys!! Came across your channel last week and the very first video I watched was the one in Tallin...simply loved u2!! I do love Sao Paulo !! Iam Brazilian and I live in the very south in the capital of Rio Grande Do sul state, in Porto Alegre city... I am an English teacher and the fact u said about ppl not speaking English is indeed a true fact... polls indicate that less than 3 percent of the population here in Brazil speak English and this is due to the high cost of learning a second Language. There is an insane difference of education acquiring according to your social level here in Brazil. I have always taught English in Private English courses and here in Brazil we have a public education that is totally free from 5 years old till you finish high school but on the other hand this same education is so poorly delivered and the main goal of English and Spanish in this system is not making students bilingual but simply teaching grammar to pass in the entrance exam for the university ( if u are luck enough to get into uni) Congrats to your channel... u 2 are soooooo lovely! Oddly enough, the first scene, shot just outside Catedral da Sé, was taken LITERALLY in the least advisable place to hold a camera or smartphone in public in this city. That place is notorious for being packet with pickpockets and crack addicts that will nick you the first chance they get. You actually got pretty lucky not being mugged while filming that take! Sampa is mostly a safe city, though... Hope you guys enjoyed your time here!

May I suggest you a few places that you guys should love visiting?There are plenty more beautiful things to do and see other than Rio. This is a just a hint on what places you could visit here: Chapada Diamantina, Barra Grande, Itacaré, Salvador, Morro de São Paulo, Jalapão, Bonito-MS, Chapada dos Veadeiros, Chapada dos Guimarães, Capitólio (Serra da Canastra), Serra do Cipó, Lencóis Maranhenses, Arraial do Cabo, Ilha Grande, Paraty, Pantanal, Belém, Manaus (there last two cities are in the midst of the Amazon Forest) Alter do Chão, Maragogi, Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Florianópolis, Pedra do Embaú, Praia do Rosa, Serra Catarinense, Serra Gaúcha, Parque Nacional dos Aparados da Serra and etc. The list is endless! You could live a lifetime here and still don't visit everything. Should you guys be interested, don't hesitate in contacting me. I'll be more than glad to help you out with some more tips.

Not everyone speaks English in Brazil because of our education. It's very poor and declining. We have English at school, but it doesn't teach us much more than some words and a little, but too little, grammar. And some people even forget everything when they go home. The only way for us to learn English is to pay for it or study by ourselves on the internet, which not a lot of people are patient enough to do. Therefore, I suggest that whenever you visit another country, try brushing up a little on its language. it's always nice, because Brazil is not the only one with people who don't speak English, and also you're the ones in the foreign land, so... ;)

Your experience reminds me when I visited Dallas in Texas from the UK. None of the taxi drivers i encountered spoke English. And I thought it was my British accent :)

Brooke Yool brazilian portuguese is closer to spanish. European-african portuguese is hard.

Red Cirkus sorry. I don’t anything about french. Just know that in América it”s a language spoken in Haiti, French Guiana and Canada. And that is far diferent front what is spoken in Europe.By the way, there is a brazilian portuguese and an european portuguese.

"catedral" is a place with a "cátedra" inside. Cátedra is an old word for "chair". But not a simple chair. A chair where sits an important person, like the bishop, a master teacher, etc. That's why cathedrals have imponent chairs... thats to symbolize that origin :)
