In Part 2 of our Red/Blue solo Pokemon Challenge we move on to Charmander, many people's favourite Kanto starter! After Bulbasaur's impressive showing, will Charmander be able to raise the bar?

I was looking at squirtle’s move pool and it can get surf, ice beam, body slam, dig. That gives it type coverage against electric, dragon and grass types, the only things water types have issues with. And all those moves are 100% accuracy with decent PP. The funny thing about the starters, I think everybody knows Bulbasaur is meant to be the easy mode (when you play normally, solo runs are completely different) while Charmander is the hardest. But the thing is that Bulbasaur is more of a support pokemon than the others, so you have to apply more clever strategies to use it effectively, which in children's game means more difficulty. I thought of this when you said that Charmander is easier due to its movepool, which will definitely be true for Squirtle as well. It doesn't learn any attack or special boosting moves though, so it might be harder
@LongfellowLP4 жыл бұрын
I was eight or nine when I played Pokémon Red for the first time and I definitely picked Charmander and bust through everything just by overleveling. I suspect Squirtle will be the most straightforward. RBY is very kind to Water-type Pokémon and JRose can cheese the badge boosts with Withdraw if he really wants.
@Surgemaster20124 жыл бұрын
I never saw the Bulbasuar line as easy mode with how many obstacles wall it mid to late game and this is for normal or solo. But that's really more of Bulbasuar being support than offense. Squirtle would be the most straightforward.
@wombat41914 жыл бұрын
@@Surgemaster2012 Yeah but I meant that the game was kinda supposed to have an easy start with the grass starter, since it performs well on the first four gyms, while fire struggles in the first two and water with 3rd and 4th. Bulbasaur's design as a support type, the rival's team (3 pokemon strong against it), and wild pokemon in the beginning, however, make it harder.
@theshoal124 жыл бұрын
Tbh I don't buy the "starters are difficulty settings" theory. Game Freak never put that much thought into their games, at least when it comes to balance, and the type chart, especially in gen 1, is proof of that.
@illusionofquality9794 жыл бұрын
@@Surgemaster2012 It is easy mode. You get at least 3 hours before you even got a taste of any difficulty in those mid to late state and by this point you have a lot of Pokemon options in a normal play. In solo play, you get status conditions so whatever you cannot brute force, you can easily bypass. The game doesn't put on it nearly as many obstacles as on the other two starters.

Something you could have tried against the Gyarados is keep Fire Spin instead of Flamethrower, then lead off the battle with a Swords Dance while the Badge boost glitch gets you an extra 12.5% to your Special to survive Hydro Pump, and then use your slightly boosted Fire Spin to whittle down Gyarados while it can't retaliate until you get it into boosted Body Slam's KO range. Considering Fire Spin's 70% accuracy and its random turn length it would require some luck but I don't think it would be an outrageous amount to beat the Gyarados doing that at a lower level than you did.

First week of school came around and I walked into the school yard with an unbeatable team of Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, Dragonite, Jolteon and Mewtwo. SOME people got past the Dragonite. But it was usually THEIR Mewtwo, their final line, just to be destroyed by Pin Missile. I then repeated the same thing with my team in Crystal version. Beat Red in Mt Silver 100 times with a single lvl 100 pkmn and used Tyranitar, Dragonite, Lugia, Ho-oh, Lugia and Mewtwo. Literally unstoppable. That Tyranitar was so hard to get past. I would lose to Walls. Blissy, Snorlax, Shuckle, Steelix, Golem as a bomb and usually another bomb like Weezing. Just get toxic-rest combo from the normals and shuckle and then sandstormed out with steelix.

I appreciate the tighter editing in these videos. I'm not sure how sustainable these are given you have 48 or so to go but keep at it!

These videos are so funny to me. Back in the day we used to think we were pretty good, we somehow didn't realize just how easy this game actually is.

I always knew Bulbasaur was the best starter, can’t wait to find out if I’m right
@Acacius19924 жыл бұрын
Eh nope. For me Bulbasaur was and is always the least Favorite (Grass) Starter.

Maik Römer lies, lies and slanderous statements! I’m not blinded by nostalgia I swear

@@Zipcodacary Just joking a bit xD (Its Oksy if people like Bulbasaur just my sight I dont like it. Besides Design it is also there are other great Grass Pokemon which you can get pretty early (unlike water or fire pokemon)

Yeah, I agree that abusing the badge boost glitch is perfectly within the spirit of things. Not only is there no way for you to just get Swords Dance without it, you can't even control whether enemies use Leer and such on you. It's a world of difference compared to putting Rare Candies in a specific inventory slot, visiting the Old Man, then surfing around the coast of Cinnabar.

I like all the games but prefer watching people do challenges of first gen so your videos are the only thing getting me through lock down

9:53 Fire Spin too tedious/inaccurate for you? Nonetheless, excellent run. Charmander's apparently a pretty good sweeper. Anyway, thanks for uploading!

Exactly, too inconsistent.

I know I'm okay with runs that have unintentional glitches. Another Pokemon youtube I watcher reset a major battle because they had one fo these unintentional glitches and I found it irritating. I want to see the game run like a normal player would but with just one Pokemon.

"53 part series" Oh man, if only he knew he'd be doing a lot more.
