that's not even the issue, fire a great offensive type in gen-1 since only rock, water, dragon and fire resist. this isn't super bad since dragons and fire types are very uncommon and all rock types in gen-1 have abysmal special stats to the point where resisted fire moves still do more damage than unboosted ground types. the problem is that charmander has no move to boost it's special stat with.

Squirtle is what speedrunners use, they get to evolve it into Blastoise obviously but I think the basic principles still work in Squirtle's favor. Gen 1 Blizzard was completely broken: 90% accuracy base power 120 move, with a 10% (30%! in the Japanese versions) chance of freezing -- which in Gen 1 NEVER THAWED unless you were dumb enoughto hit the frozen opponent with a fire type move

The funny thing about the starters, I think everybody knows Bulbasaur is meant to be the easy mode (when you play normally, solo runs are completely different) while Charmander is the hardest. But the thing is that Bulbasaur is more of a support pokemon than the others, so you have to apply more clever strategies to use it effectively, which in children's game means more difficulty. I thought of this when you said that Charmander is easier due to its movepool, which will definitely be true for Squirtle as well. It doesn't learn any attack or special boosting moves though, so it might be harder
@LongfellowLP
@LongfellowLP 4 жыл бұрын
I was eight or nine when I played Pokémon Red for the first time and I definitely picked Charmander and bust through everything just by overleveling. I suspect Squirtle will be the most straightforward. RBY is very kind to Water-type Pokémon and JRose can cheese the badge boosts with Withdraw if he really wants.
@Surgemaster2012
@Surgemaster2012 4 жыл бұрын
I never saw the Bulbasuar line as easy mode with how many obstacles wall it mid to late game and this is for normal or solo. But that's really more of Bulbasuar being support than offense. Squirtle would be the most straightforward.
@wombat4191
@wombat4191 4 жыл бұрын
@@Surgemaster2012 Yeah but I meant that the game was kinda supposed to have an easy start with the grass starter, since it performs well on the first four gyms, while fire struggles in the first two and water with 3rd and 4th. Bulbasaur's design as a support type, the rival's team (3 pokemon strong against it), and wild pokemon in the beginning, however, make it harder.

Tbh I don't buy the "starters are difficulty settings" theory. Game Freak never put that much thought into their games, at least when it comes to balance, and the type chart, especially in gen 1, is proof of that.
@illusionofquality979
@illusionofquality979 4 жыл бұрын
@@Surgemaster2012 It is easy mode. You get at least 3 hours before you even got a taste of any difficulty in those mid to late state and by this point you have a lot of Pokemon options in a normal play. In solo play, you get status conditions so whatever you cannot brute force, you can easily bypass. The game doesn't put on it nearly as many obstacles as on the other two starters.

Something you could have tried against the Gyarados is keep Fire Spin instead of Flamethrower, then lead off the battle with a Swords Dance while the Badge boost glitch gets you an extra 12.5% to your Special to survive Hydro Pump, and then use your slightly boosted Fire Spin to whittle down Gyarados while it can't retaliate until you get it into boosted Body Slam's KO range. Considering Fire Spin's 70% accuracy and its random turn length it would require some luck but I don't think it would be an outrageous amount to beat the Gyarados doing that at a lower level than you did.

when I was a boy I heard a rumor about the stat leveling and I faced the Elite Four over 100 times per single pokemon one summer before fourth grade. First week of school came around and I walked into the school yard with an unbeatable team of Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise, Dragonite, Jolteon and Mewtwo. SOME people got past the Dragonite. But it was usually THEIR Mewtwo, their final line, just to be destroyed by Pin Missile. I then repeated the same thing with my team in Crystal version. Beat Red in Mt Silver 100 times with a single lvl 100 pkmn and used Tyranitar, Dragonite, Lugia, Ho-oh, Lugia and Mewtwo. Literally unstoppable. That Tyranitar was so hard to get past. I would lose to Walls. Blissy, Snorlax, Shuckle, Steelix, Golem as a bomb and usually another bomb like Weezing. Just get toxic-rest combo from the normals and shuckle and then sandstormed out with steelix.

4:40 It's amusing that Charmander, a fire Pokemon, uses dig in a gym full of water. What's he digging, the water? How can he survive the water?

Yeah, I agree that abusing the badge boost glitch is perfectly within the spirit of things. Not only is there no way for you to just get Swords Dance without it, you can't even control whether enemies use Leer and such on you. It's a world of difference compared to putting Rare Candies in a specific inventory slot, visiting the Old Man, then surfing around the coast of Cinnabar.

Have a feeling squirtle is going to be a lot easier since it is set up so well for elite four. They have almost no super effective moves and between surf, dig and ice beam, there is pretty good coverage. Losing out on swords dance might be more damaging than I think, though.

I was furiously typing that you should have used Slash over body slam, then I remembered crits ignore all stat changes, like you said in the first video. Body slam with its low crit rate and 30%(?) chance to paralyze was a much better choice.

Two part comment: 1: In the German pronunciation, the last syllable should be "lie." In Japanese, they'll sometimes spell it Lorelai to make it sound more German. Although, you can't really get an authentic pronunciation without a German R sound. 2: Good for you for not letting pronunciation police push you around. Especially if they try to make you pronounce a German word based on Japanese phonetics. Also, German dialects are so diverse that you might be able to find one that pronounces her name that way.

I’m glad your more recent videos show you losing at lower levels to more advanced opponents while giving it your best shot. Once I saw Charmander at crazy high levels, it got boring, like when I would constantly beat the Elite 4 as a kid to get to Level 100 so that I could use them competitively in PStadium.

Xerpaderp he did ya dingus. Watch his top 10 hardest solo Pokémon video. He says weedle isn’t worth doing because Koga and Agatha will be impossible. That’s a fact. Agatha has all of Agatha’s Pokémon resist poison. Her ghosts double resist it and are immune to struggle.
