Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

Venusaur obliterates 90% of the game with proper movesets. Brock, misty, LT Surge, Giovanni, Erika, even Koga. Then Lorelei and Bruno are jokes as well. The rest you should have another team members. @@yorecf9641 Tbh it does not need anything else but Psychic and Psybeam 😂. The thing about Alakazam is that it's available really early game. You don't have 2 badges and you can already access Abra (Nugget Bridge), grind to lvl 16 and trade/use a modded game to get Alakazam. Starmie is also a great one, but tbh you can also use Gyarados as your water type, also very early game (right outside Pewter). In FRLG Hypno is also pretty good as a Psychic type. By Cerulean you can have 5 excellent Pokémon. Fearow, your starter(I personally always pick Bulbasaur), Gyarados, Nidoking and Alakazam.

I love gen 1 as much as the next guy and I find an enjoyment with exploits that makes the series unique but none of that affects the fact the programming is bad. @dstinnettmusic
@dstinnettmusic Жыл бұрын
@@lordnoodle2146 I guess bad is relative. To me, bad code means lazy code. If you work really hard to find a way to do something you didn’t know how to do, and you get it done by deadline, that is good code. It might not be efficient code, but it is good code Pokémon is actually a pretty complex JRPG when you think about it. It hides under a kiddie media brand. But Pokémon has like 24 standalone classes and many of these can be mixed and matched. With an entire system of secret leveling system based on how you raise your team. Like, yeah glitches. But imo, bad isn’t the right word for what they pulled off.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again since you’re revisiting the starters now. There’s not many Pokémon that can learn both swords dance and hyper beam, but charizard is one of them. It’s very overpowered in gen 1 when you don’t have to recharge if hyper beam one shots. It’s probably not necessary but should be a lot of fun to do when you get to the charizard run.
@DemonRaticate

Hyper Beam would actually kill Charizard’s time. If the TM was on the floor it would be a cinch, but due to it being a game corner exclusive move that costs an arm and a leg (and with no way to speed up buying coins) Jrose never gets it. He spends his money on Vitamin in the department store for more consistency. Body Slam is more than enough to sweep with Charizard and Swords Dance though.

I would have replaced Body Slam with Mimic for the Elite 4, which is what I did in my almost minimum battles run with Bulbasaur (with the only optional battle being to get Body Slam). That way you can mimic Dream Eater and beat Agatha faster while also not having to Growth all the way, while you can just Mimic Hyper Beam against Lance to get through his dragons faster, and then against Blue you can Mimic Hydro Pump or Psychic so you can one-shot Zard, reducing the likelihood of getting screwed by crits, getting burned, or getting eternally locked in Fire Spin. Doing that would have probably shaved 5-10 minutes off for Venusaur's time and make it upper A tier.

I find it funny how on Rival 6 you have body slam, swords dance, growth and a grass move, but you only start setting up growth for defense after teaching mega drain. And then continue to not use the grass move anyway since you only need the special defense.

I would like to thank you for all the hard work you put in those wideos. Just great and super fun to watch. I have 2 ideas for you, 1: compilation of failed impossible challenges (just where and why on Agatha you had to abandon those), and 2: run comparison between kanto games: R/B, Y, FR/LG, and LGPE with mewtwo.

I can't remember if there's been a time where a critical hit has actually come in clutch specifically because it lets you dodge your stats being lowered? Certainly not, I don't think, specifically to avoid the attack lowering effect of burn. But each run brings something new, usually!

Something I just thought about with this run since you mentioned pre-evolved starters several times, I kinda wish the exp bonus granted to unevolved Pokemon was a thing starting with gen 1 instead of being introduced so much later. Mainly because I wonder how much of an impact that mechanic would have by basically granting extra levels to 'mons that aren't fully evolved. Might lead to some pre-evos getting better times than their final stages lol

After watching so many of these Red/Blue runs and seeing all the mechanics of the game and how you've used them, I have a question: What non-Gen 1 starter, first form and/or final form, do you think would do the best in this game? Of course, the way since they all have a split Special and some are new types it wouldn't be one to one, but I'm still curious in what you think.

I'm loving these solo runs! I'd also love to see what it would be like if you started with unevolved mons and let them evolve at the proper level. Unfortunately those runs are rather redundant when you're doing the pre and post evolved runs. Maybe an idea for the end of the series

Fighting Koga before Rival fival ended up being a good idea after all! As you already know, when you swords danced you badge boost glitched your speed. Soul Badge increases speed despite saying defense. You basically did Dragon Dance in generation 1!

In the first gen, Bulbasaur is the most tricky starter to train due to a poor moveset. Along the other generations, Venusaur gets more and more interesting moves, and in current competitive gameplay it's always a tough opponent to match with.

It really depends on the game. People say that Venusaur is the best starter in gen 1 but that is wrong. Venusaur itself is quite mediocre, gen 1 just hands it victory on a silver platter with the gym leaders and type matchups it gets. Charizard is a much better mon but gets destroyed in gen 1 because it was handed the opposite of Venusaur. And Blastoise gets shafted by the fact that there are much better water types in the game to use although on a solo challenge it will still be carried by how good the water typing is. If you put Venusaur in gen 2 for example it's gonna suck while Charizard will wreak havoc and Blastoise will be less outclassed due to the pokemon available in gen 2.

Yes. Venusaur was best. Growth used to do what calm mind did. Razor leaf had a much higher chance of dealing double damage (and crits used to deal approximately double damage). Sleep used to last far longer and work on grass types, and Venusaur was the fastest sleep powder user (and speed used to increase critical hit rate). Leech seed works great for things razor leaf is weak against. If you use potions on it, this is god-tier that can pretty much beat everything that doesn't knock it out in the first 2 turns. Also, it was the best against the first 3 gyms.

First off I have to say I'm really enjoying the month of Jrose, and especially this video because like many, I grew up on gen 1 and started my adventure when I was 6 with my trusty first Bulbasaur 😂. After second guessing for weeks, I'm 33 years old and just bought Violet yesterday, but this run on in the background really took me back to the 90's to my first pokemon adventure ever.

It's been forever since I played legit gen 1, but I do a fire red or leaf green playthrough a couple times a year usually (a long with an emerald and crystal run through before I pick a highly rated ROM hack and dump 300 hours in it). I almost always go with Bulbasaur because I love the moveset I can get with him super early on: Leech Seed, Absorb, Mega/Giga Drain, then poison powder. It's a nearly unbeatable toxic wall with constant health refresh and the leech seed works well for helping to swap into a glass cannon to set up and sweep. Makes plowing through the gyms a cakewalk for the most part. But even after saying that, I seriously think there is NO best gen 1 starter. I absolutely ADORE the gen 2 and 3 starters, all of them, and Gen 3 in particular is close to gen 1 for having no BEST starter, but really Swampert just edges it out unless you're willing to REALLY invest some time into EV training a Blazekin (idk how to spell it), and in gen 2 Totodile is just objectively the best due to rage and how it functions in those games, feraligatr may be best in raw power too, idk, but rage is enough on its own. But in gen 1, I really think they PERFECTED balancing those starters, they all 3 fill a ton of roles in a battle and they do their jobs damn well. My only complaints about gen 1 starters AT ALL are in 3 parts: 1. Shiny Charizard doesn't have an option to let you have his old purple shiny or the new black shiny 2. Squirtle doesn't have sunglasses on 3. That you have to choose between them instead of taking all 3. Just for the coolness factor alone, if Pokemon were real; I'd trade off my absolutely monstrous EV trained Aggron, Metagross, and shiny Salamence in exchange for a Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander.
