The Mr Needlemouse thing is actually a very common misconception that was cleared up only last year amongst the english fandom. He was called Mr Hedgehog. Hedgehog in japanese is combination of needle and mouse, I guess in a similar way that for the animal we combined the words hedge and hog

The correct translation has been documented for much longer, it’s just that it was treated as an “alternative” (correct) translation instead of plain mistranslation. But the mistranslation thing blew up in January 2021, which was pretty much three years ago. Misinformation is very hard to kill completely, and there are still likely many people who don’t know about the correct translation. I’m so mad that it has been spread so widely, because it’s VERY BASIC Japanese, but all it needs is one person to start it off. It’s likely the person or outlet that initially spread this information did not know Japanese or used a machine translator.
