IDK about a toaster, but as someone that spends a lot of time out of town in company provided hotel rooms (that doesnt like to eat out all the time) using the iron and ironing board with some aluminum foil makes great quasadilla and grill cheese. I always have bread, tortillas, process cheese, pouch chicken and leftover taco bells sauce packets and aluminum foil in my out of town work cooler. Nothing like a fresh grilled cheese or chicken quasadilla in your hotel room to put you in a good mood. A "homemade" comfort food dinner. pair with some microwave retort pack rice (for quasadilla) or maybe some microwave soup with the grilled cheese.

@Storm wulf Not really. You don't want to risk either A) possible stuck on gunk from the iron on your food, or B) having the cheese getting stuck on the iron. Think of it this way, at home you have your stove (heat) and a pan, right? In this instance, the iron is the heat source, and the foil is your "pan"... it's just very thin and folds over your food, rather than staying underneath.

I never use “food lube” (aka oil or butter) when making quesadillas on the stovetop or in the oven, and the tortilla is always plenty crispy with great flavor overall. I’ve also toasted tortillas many times in the toaster before and they crisp up beautifully without using any added oils. If it’s purely the flavor of butter or oil that you’re after- that’s one thing, but neither are necessary to achieve a wonderfully crispy tortilla :)

2:05 Hi Emmy (and anyone in the comments section)! The reason for this is planned obsolescence. It is a practice adopted by many big companies of deliberately ensuring that the current version of a given product will become out of date or useless within a known time period. It guarantees that consumers will have to replace it quickly, increasing their profits. It was decidedly adopted by many economists and companies in the wake of WWII and continues to this day. Creates massive amounts of waste.
@MishasMama2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was looking for this comment before adding one. Prior to planned obsolescence simple things like nylon panty hose and light bulbs were built to last or be indestructible. There is a documentary that talks about how manufacturers were fined if their light bulbs lasted longer than they were supposed to.

Hi Emmy, love your vlogs, the recipe ones and the MRE ones. Making filled toasted sandwiches in a toasted is great, I use Sandwich Toaster bags, they're reusable so v.f.m ! We have them in the U.K. and saves using a grill and trying to turn them over. My daughter uses foil, she makes up a nicely filled sandwich then wraps it in foil making sure she folds the foil in half so it is at the bottom of the sandwich then folds the sides over one to each side giving an equal thickness of foil on both sides. She says it's just so easy and when you open up the foil put it on top of a plate to catch any crumbs, easy clean up and no dirty plate. If your wondering the brad does get crispy like ordinary unwrapped bread does, leave the top of the foil open so you don't get a steam build up. Happy toasting. xx

Along the same lines as the old toaster, my grandpa bought my grandma a microwave in the early 80s. It worked great for about 5 years and then the button you had to push to open it stopped working. My uncle tore it apart and figured out how the opening mechanism worked. Drilled a small hole in the metal casing at the top, and figured out you could push a nail into it and it would pop open. She used that same thing for another 15 years before it finally gave up. She just always had a nail on a string hanging from the cupboard door handle above it.

A few thoughts. One, I'll probably try this, though since what I have is a toaster oven, not a standard toaster, I'm going to wind up with slightly different results. No fear of cheese leakage, at least. About that chance of leakage, I remember seeing "grilled cheese toaster bags" (I think you may have even tested them once), and they seemed like they were basically parchment paper. So... a piece of parchment paper (or foil - though I'm not sure of it's safe to use in a regular toaster), folded envelope style might be useful. I think I might try this for lunch today, and since mine will be laying flat and will be a bit further from the heating element, I may add a very thin layer of butter on each side.
@micasigning2 жыл бұрын
Also, have you tried the frozen flour tortillas that are not cooked yet? If you toast them right on the grill of a gas stove without using a pan. (Be careful not to burn your fingers… you can use tongs) then put right on the iron grates above the flame and constantly shift the tortilla every 2-3 seconds so they don’t stick or burn. Flip and rotate and shift again until bubbly and lightly charred. This is the best! And they taste like the hand made ones you get at most Mexican restaurants in Houston TX. You haven’t had great quesadillas until you’ve tried them with semi-homemade tortillas de harina

This _can_ be dangerous. If a person stuffs the tortilla too full, or with heavy, moisture-laden ingredients, it could split on the bottom (or if the tortilla has some tears in it already...some are more fragile), which would allow the oils and liquids from the cheese, and any other ingredients, to bubble and splatter onto the heating elements of the toaster. That could lead to fires, electrical shorts, etc. I definitely don't recommend this method. People need to be aware of the dangers, and make safe choices. The greatest danger is if the toaster is left unattended, of course, where the smoke and odor that precedes a fire might be missed.

The problem with cheese in the toaster is if it overflows it will go directly into the heating element and immediately catch on fire. A quick Google of "cheese toasty fire" will show you how many Brits have started house fires laying the toaster on it's side and trying to make one. I'd be worried folding the tortilla could weaken it depending on the brand of tortilla and bam all the cheese runs out and you have a house fire.

Appliances nowadays are made with far less quality than they used to be. Companies tend to trade cost to make vs quality and unlike in the past far less companies are less concerned with being know for quality versus being less expensive vs their competition.

My parents still have the same black and decker toaster from when I was born (30 years ago)

Finished watching the video and tried it right away, hey I needed a snack. I can see becoming a late night dorm snack for the college kids.

I once, as a little kid, wanted a grilled cheese but in the toaster. I nearly started a huge fire! Poor Grandma ran down the stairs to stop the smoke and sparks! 🤣
