Unlike other beat'em ups this game has the learning curve of a more technical 1vs1 fighting game, once you learn to control the cyborg and get used to the mechanics the game is quite fun. As mentioned the main problem is how repetitive it is, specially when one of the enemies you will always see is the insect body with the somersault legs and the normal hand. The gap in the first level can be jump if you use the flying kick in mid air. You also can rebuild the enemies you destroy if you combine the frontal kick and the grab command, it is very useful in co op.
@samfrito
@samfrito 4 жыл бұрын
Dude, you nailed it. This is still one of my favorites just for all the interesting things you can do, like helping put your fallen companion back together, but you have to hurry or his core will explode. This is a repetitive game, but plays well once you get it down. I still remember how a friend and I pretty much cannibalized every enemy bot, one took the arm, one took the body for a streak of about 5 minutes and laughed constantly. Great game for the time and should have gotten a sequel with more variety in the levels.
@phammcast
@phammcast 3 жыл бұрын
MUCH BETTER representation of the game. I agree about the levels, but that's the only glaring flaw I can think of! All games are repetitive if you simplify them as such, hell, LIFE is repetitive! If you pay attn, we all basically do the same shit every single day with some minor variation here and there. I hate when ppl label a game "repetitive" when it's no difference in repetition that any other game. That should be reserved for games that deserve it, not this one. YOU BOTH GET IT!

I'm the opposite but with the SNES, I only know the big famous games, or at least I only did before discovering this channel. But even for the Mega Drive he covers so many games that nobody else on KZbin does, so whenever I need something new to play I go watch his videos again to try and find some game that's lesser known but still great. And it's always fun to just binge his videos for hours at a time anyway. There's all these little games that went under the radar but are worth playing today. And he's not one of those guys who plays retro games with the nostalgia goggles on and enjoys "Nintendo hard" for its own sake, if a game is bad by today's standards he'll say so, if it's clunky and full of unfair BS that isn't real difficulty but just cheap difficulty then he'll let you know. Luckily there are enough games from the old days that actually were designed properly and so are still great to play.

I get the impression this game was mimicking several japanese games that have clunky mech controls, but didn't understand how to make the clunky feel more like 'heavy', which the better japanese mech games felt like. The slow animations would work here if the enemies didn't have such short recovery times. Only the player has 'heaviness' of movement, but the enemies don't? That's not cool. As for the repetition of the game, I think all beat em ups suffer from this if they go on too long, it's just that CJ draws attention to it with it's lackluster stages whereas other games hide it with the variety of places to beat up enemies, including cliffs and rivers to throw enemies into, conveyor belts, etc. This has virtually none of that.

Jeremy Landry agreed when I saw this it immediately reminded me of Heavy Nova on genesis. The thing is though, I actually like Heavy Nova. It's bad but it just has way more variety. I mean the dorks behind that game tried to put platforming exploration elements into their 2d fighting game engine. And you gotta love that music and the hilarious Engrish. That game is a a huge guilty pleasure for me tbh

There's a quite a bit scattered for all the systems. My recommendation is get Metal Warriors. Not only is single player a blast, but it's amazingly fun vs. split screen. Definately deserves a remaster or a remake for a modern console with redesigned commands, fixes on level design and hitboxes, maybe a tutorial mode aside from arcade/story (in this case story and arcade mode are a single thing as they always suposed to) and a Reworked Arena mode... the original had one but it was unlockable and kinda sucked...

Here is a cool trick that the video didn't show: Once an enemy was first destroyed, you could REASSEMBLE it if you Kicked it (A + back - or was it front) to raise part of its body (legs), then crouch (Down + C) and then press B over its upper body to put his torso back on it. This would revive the enemy and it was a second opportunity to later extract its arm or rip the torso (for health). Or just kick it twice to make it blow. Man, I played a lot this game when I was young at a friend's house, and I gotta say it was one of the best co-op experiences I had at the time. Together, we figured out all the moves (since the game was rented and we didn't have a manual OR spoke any English). Plus, we ignored all the flaws of the game, pointed very well by the video, because the combat was just so fun. We died a lot at those holes on the ground, but later we figured out you could pass them with any legs, as long as you did a double jump, followed by a B attack (the timing was a little hard, but it was doable). The combat was the best part, at least for me. Being able to switch everything but your torso allowed for a lot of customization and once you got used to holding A and pressing a direction to do the different moves, the game got a lot more enjoyable.
@samfrito
@samfrito 4 жыл бұрын
The reassembly animation was such a cool thing too. Usually games of this era had such limits and Cyborg Justice was there giving you opportunities to rebuild the enemies over and over to consume energy and get your life back... aren't you able to even increase your stock of lives this way?

I remember the one time I played this, with no manual of course. My brothers and I come to that pit in the first level. "What's the jump button?" "How do we get over this?" And the game was forever shelved. If your game has a counter-intuitive obstacle in the first five minutes, your game is garbage. Do you ever see companies like Nintendo or Square pull that kind of crap?
@matthew-005
@matthew-005 Жыл бұрын
You can actually jump the gap in the first level with ANY legs the pneumatic legs are just the amateur option you have to run, jump and double leg kick with ANY legs this adds distance and the kick makes you hover for a second so it can be do if you use the moves correctly. All in all the game has a high skill ceiling and demands that you reach it fast this is a problem but if you get good at the game is not at all.

I remember renting this back when I would occasionally rent a sega genesis (I had an snes) and really wanting to like it since it seemed like such a cool concept, being able to take limbs from your enemies. But damn was it clunky.

We had mortal kombat, justice league taskforce and a couple other fighters on sega but the one we played the most together was probably cyborg justice. The single player's garbage, coop's ok, but vs. mode is a lot of fun. There's something pretty awesome about ripping eachother's arms off and stealing them. I dunno we were kids, but that shit was pretty awesome to us, better than the gore of mortal kombat.

I played this game, in co-op with my brother, like mad as a kid. I tried it just a few weeks ago and couldn't get the controls down. I'll be honest, I really enjoyed the game. The controls seem much more difficult then what I remember. Either way I'd love to see this game be re-imagined in the modern times, but I can't think of anything to add to deepen game play, other than polishing it up and cleaning up the mechanics.

So many cool ideas in this game. Great sprite work too, complete with some grungy ass Genesis music to boot. Too bad it's a bit of a mess...

I had a lot of fun playing this game when it came out. I liked ripping the arms & torsos off & putting back together. I also loved the music (most stage 2 & the boss theme). When I revisited this game years later, it seemed very repetitious.

I loved this game as a kid because there was nothing quite like it and the 1 v 1 battle mode was a lot of fun. Fun fact, normally if you sawblade an enemy, they lose their 'special arm'. If you pluck out their special arm then sawblade them, they lose their 'normal offhand', but you can use that and it'll replace your offhand. Rewarding when you're going for a certain look. Like Crab-Robot or Tank-bot. Additionally if you did this to a boss (all they are is a torso with legs) they could still try to tear off your arm with no arms of their own, which would cause the game to hard lock. Finally, ducking was OP because you'd either be able to backflip out of the way, pick up non-heavy bots and bodyslam them, or ducking-slam into their ankles, which was difficult to counter. I loved the variety of moves, but yeah, some tactics were -best-, like abusing foreground movement to close distance and pull off parts. However, the game is VERY repetitive. Obnoxiously so. And then the final boss is completely different from the rest of the game. It's a weird one, but it was pretty fun and felt good when you got better at it. I especially liked latching onto enemies to steal their life. Or putting your other, ally, player back together when they got reduced to no life to bring them back. The small stuff in this game feels good.

my brother bought this for me from a bargain bin at Christmas when I was a kid. when I opened it, it was hard to pretend excited about it. once I played it, I dunno, it had its moments but mostly , like you said, too repetitive, probably played it for a week

God, its colour palette! Ugh. Who wants to be a piss-yellow mech fighting bile-green enemies against brown backgrounds? How is this made by the _Echo the Dolphin_ guys? Seriously? I know the Mega Drive only had 512 colours (plus dark/light variants), but that _usually_ led to more *vibrant* games (it was the SNES, with its 32,767 colours which revelled in its luxuriant display of many many shades of brown). This is just straight up ugly.

Pneumatic legs are not needed for the gap at 4:12, a properly timed jump-kick will do it...barely, lol Some things weren't mentioned that I feel are important -absorbing the torso is the only way to get health and lives -the big legs are all you need for the whole game, trap don't work on them -both the crusher arm and the saw can be used to remove the SECOND arm after you pulled the first off -kick once when they are a pile(makes their legs "stand up"), then pick up the torso and put back on the legs to continue(works as a co-op "revive" and to get specific parts, quickly...eventually explodes, lol) -only the boss can use the laser from it's chest, you can have the same body(can't remember all the names, it was 20+ yrs ago, lol) but the laser can't fire...I think -frog body + crusher arm + big legs = the best(cut off the Quasimodo 2nd arm for the coolest "near symmetrical" look, both are 3 pointed and look sharp), IMO I don't miss this game, The Surge(1&2) is better, Dark Souls is ever better than that(no limb ripping, tho).

My orthodontist had a 3-in-1 Sega cabinet in their lobby. It was this game, Echo the Dolphin and a Taz-Mania tie-in game. Unfortunately, the B button (I think it was) was broken. With your mention of the first two being by the same company, it makes me wonder if the Taz-Mania game was, too. Looking it up… No, doesn't look like it.

So I remember playing this game originally back in 93-94, when it came out with my late older brother, and the nostalgic memories it brings back, for me, are invaluable. Back then we weren't as picky about gameplay and what not, either, because games weren't as deep, or expensive back then. From what I can remember my brother and I had a lot of fun customizing our robots and kicking the shit out of all the ai bots together. We were into the double dragon, and contra style of 2p co-op games and this was very much like those games. I remember loving this game as a kid, for sure!

you forgot to mention the most irritating part of the game, the first level NEVER STOPS FIRING MISSILES AT YOU!!! its ridiculous how much those things can screw you over even if you know what your doing and playing the game well because they just don't stop and they move so fast and the clunky controls make them almost impossible to consistently dodge, honestly I wouldn't be shocked if every stage had that.
