I was really waiting for this after people had time to play through BG3. I'm on the final fight in that game, but as I get close to wrapping it up, I couldn't stop thinking about DOS2. It's a much tighter experience for me and I love the characters so much. The gameplay is so refined and yet so fluid. Personally, I think it walks that blade a lot more finely than BG3. Of course, I don't think that makes BG3 better or worse. I'm glad that we have both, but I would urge people not to let the size and newness of BG3 to overshadow DOS2. It really stands on its own and shouldn't be brushed under the rug.

I agree that BG3 was hamstrung by the 5E ruleset. if Larion was allowed to go more wild (like with the fixes to the Monk) I think there would have be a ton more build diversity. I look forward to DOS3 as they will likely take the best parts of the BG3 gameplay and rebrand them without WOTC looking over their shoulder.

@@sharpiesharpie8356 no, you don't have to. They are different stories, so start with whichever one you like. DOS2 is a bit more free-form, while BG3 adheres to the established 5e rule set so its a bit more structured.

You are 100% correct. After playing DOS1&2, BG3, I think DOS2 is my favorite. Obviously there are big improvements to the cutscenes in BG3, but overall I think I prefer the DOS2 combat a bit more, and the story is more lighthearted for the most part.

I think of it more as a double edge sword. On the one hand it's great that they're getting talked about. On the other a magnifying glass is looming over there studio right now, watching their every move by the greater gaming world. If they make one single mistake, it's CDPR all over again. And yes, quite an over exaggeration on my part, but the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 got that much scrutiny and still does *even* with all of the fixes and the like, there are some who won't see it that way, let alone play it. Probably a minority in that juncture but there are a group of people who won't play it because of that "press". They can still be themselves but as of this very moment as I'm typing this, literally everyone and their mother and father are watching and listening in on the studio that brought a game considered "questionable" in terms of game design philosophy. By some game studios no less. And we haven't even scratched the surface yet it's not even funny. Much love and respect.

Same. I don't like the spellcasting in BG3, since everything you do is locked to spell slots that only regenerates on a long rest (some items can give you slots back). DOS2 is not part of DnD, which is why it feels more like an ARPG with turn based combat, which I like. I prefer the skill/spell school system where you can basically create your own class and see how well you can do, over the set classes that BG3 has. Same thing with the loot system. You gain loot more often and it has more stats. In BG3 there is just Armour Class for defense and think like spell attack or saving throws.

It was so good, I did multiple playthroughs and cried at the end of each thanks to the epic music and storyline. As soon as I saw Larian's logo with BG3 I knew I had to play, I bought it the first day of early access due to my trust in their enthusiasm, a trust well placed. 300hr in BG3, and I'm still seeing stuff on KZbin that I didn't know. Got into Divinity 2 rather by accident, looking for a game I could play cooperatively with my nephews. I'm a long time D&D ttrpg player, and had introduced them to the mmorpg Neverwinter. Which we had played extensively. What sold me on it was a reviews calling it the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate, including a review of yours. Oh, and your build guides. I was already playing Divinity 2 when BG3 was announced, and the fact that Larian was making the game instantly sold me on it.

I enjoy both games but I favor BG3 pretty heavily. The cinematic presentation goes a long way for deeper immersion for me. DOS2 also has this sort of goofier vibe to it while still having very mature themes, it doesn't take itself as seriously as BG3 much to it's detriment in my opinion. I like the combat more in BG3 as well. I found the surface effects in DOS2 combat overdone to an annoying level and the armour system felt meaningless. I think the divinty action point system could be superior to 5e but it needs a lot of work. I hope when they inevitably make DOS3 they take all the best elements from both games and come up with something all together better than both

I was honestly really bummed when the lions share of environmental effects from DOS2 didn't make it to BG3. the idea of spells and abilities changing based on the elemental surfaces gave a ton of variety to playstyles and class combos for the party. I feel it most in the Archer archetype as BG3 archers feel really flat versus the mobile "debuffing" playstyle of DOS2 archer. I cant ignore DOS2's endgame and the creative decision of restricting the group for the final chapter as it felt like a betrayal of everything building up to that point, however the gameplay before that point was 10/10 for me. DOS2 is the reason why BG3 ran so smooth so hearing that DOS3 is on the horizon is really exciting.
@Saxpunch
@Saxpunch 11 ай бұрын
Regarding your issue with the endgame, that kind of depends on your actions throughout the game leading up to the finale. I conversely appreciate that ignoring or overruling your companions can quite easily lead them to abandon you in turn at the end - but if you stick by them, they’ll stick by you and you’ll enjoy a much larger party at the end. I really couldn’t stand the plot-twist dumps at the last minute of the narrative however. Story-wise, the game turns into a dumpster fire after act 2, which is a real shame.
@bobnewkirk7003
@bobnewkirk7003 11 ай бұрын
@@Saxpunch the whole "Only one" plotline is where I have issue with the game. The entire rest of the game you are exploring your companions backstory, building relationships and group synergy then all of that is cast aside at endgame. Swapping to mercs to make it through to the end, or just saying "screw it" and rolling a Lone Wolf build completely changed the game for me for the worse. at least in BG3 we can build those relationships and see them fully play out by the end.

It is very unforgiving in the beginning, with your super limited skills and limited money and ways to get money, and inherent inability to grind for anything like in most other RPG's. I think a big missing factor here is the WRITING. DOS2's writing was simply a generational leap over the first, and went from kinda quirky lame humor, to genuinely funny and charming. Introducing a narrator for DOS2 was also a brilliant stroke that added to this, and it was done super well. It created a level of polish to the RPG that was very nearly movie-esque in a way few other games have ever been. I think this all mattered way more than just the general 'voice acting' for general dialogue.

So, instead of joining the BG3 early access I got DOS2 during a Steam sale to try out a Larian RPG. I absolutely loved the game. The quests, the companions, the story, and the turn-based table-top style combat were all amazing. I knew that BG3 was in the right hands. All the praise that BG3 has earned is well-deserved. But so much of what fans love about BG3 was also a huge part of DOS2. And DOS2 doesn’t receive anywhere near as much love as BG3.

i looooove the combat system in DOS2, especially on tactician its very challenging BUT i will say the armor system is a bit daunting at times since it limits the way you approach fights most of the time

I would love to see a breakdown of what I consider the best quest reward that isn't a piece of gear. Lohse's song. I remember sitting in amazement, with my friend, as she broke out the lute after killing the Doctor, I got chills up my spine. As a Boomer Gamer, who started with pong, I still think that moment, that fantastic song, that unusual payoff; was one of the best quest rewards of all time.

I’ve finished BG3 now and even though I loved it, I still prefer DOS2, the combat and abilities are just more exciting in my opinion, and even though BG3s companions are great, again DOS2 have more characters that are more likeable. I’ve enjoyed BG3 and it deserves GOTY, but DOS2 is my all time favourite… that and Bloodborne 😊

i started with bg3 then went to dos2 because of how much i enjoyed it. i love both games, i’ll definitely be playing both to exhaustion. i do think that bg3 worked a lot harder on the companions and interactions, they had something to say about everything and it really felt like they were there with you for the journey and growing with you. dos2 had great companions, too, but they only really had something to say when main story or personal quest events happened. it also broke immersion a bit when NPCs kept repeating the same dialogues to each other over and over again (driftwood i’m looking at you). dos2 had a much more fun and in depth combat system imo tho. i personally enjoyed bg3 more, but both are a couple of my favorite games.

DOS2 is absolutely spectacular! The only thing I didn’t like was some enemies having separate physical and magic damage shields. I also love BG3 and am a veteran of that whole series. Still, I actually like DOS2 the best. Larian is by far my favorite studio these days.

honestly this format and their system has really shown larian is a top tier game studio with a chokehold on this genre. And I desperately want them to dip their toes in differrent genres of tabletop, like maybe we can finally get a shadowrun game worth caring about

Hmmm. Maybe you allocated stats weirdly. Don't be afraid to use the consumables you get. Sadly the shield system is weird. You could go almost full magic or full physical damage.

DOS2 is like Baldurs Gate but instead of being mildly stressful, it’s unrelentingly fun. I think despite them seeming similar due to Larian’s touch, they are like polar opposites when it comes to gameplay. I love both games, but DOS2 is probably the most fun CRPG I’ve ever played.

me and my cousin lived at the same apartment back when dos2 came out, he started playing it and recommended it for me, but i was so overwhelmed by responsibilities that i didn't even go after reviews... he moved to another city and i didn't play dos2 until after playing bg3... i actually forgot about the title through the years, i play a lot of tabletop campaigns, not just dnd but also vtm, gurps, daemon, 3d&t,... bg3 amazed me just like it did to everyone else i know played it, and after beating my first run i got dos2 and i honestly don't know if i actually didn't like it more than bg3 😅😅 i'm going to my second run as soon as i finish my evil dark urge run on bg3, and i'm planning on playing as one of thr origin character, to get more content.

Yes. I have over 1400 hours in it. It was D: O S 1 that converted me from hating turn-based games to massively preferring them. D: O S 2 stepped everything up, and i've been permanently playing it since. I still play other games, but i've ALWAYS got a DOS2 run in progress. I absolutely love BG3, but i greatly prefer the combat in D: O S 2.

Larian did early access just right. I wish the is model was followed by more companies. They weren’t afraid to do it for more than one year but they didn’t let it go too long to the point where the game was practically never going to be released.

next time Larian could make a little bit less linear story progression. Kinda like WoW does with the starting zones where you choose a zone to start in. Or like Mass Effect did in they gave you a choice of multiple leads to pursue in different zones. After a few playthroughs some of which are completed some of which are not, im sick of the starting zone :D.

I have avoided turn based combat games for my entire life, I just never thought they were for me. I decided to give Baldur's Gate 3 a try, thinking ok, I've thrown away 60 bucks on games before, this won't be the first time, but at least I can say I tried it. I was so wrong. I'm 100% addicted to BG3, and I'll definitely be playing OS2. I can just tell I'm going to end up putting hundreds of hours into these games.

Keep in mind that BG3 is a lot more straightforward than DOS 2. I played both and with BG3 I mostly knew when and what to do (except sleeping in camp). But in DOS 2? Oh boy, this is my first playthrough and I’m using a google docs walkthrough 🥲 I just don’t want to miss any sweet loot or funny quests but DAMN is the game big 😂

BG3 was my favorite game of all time before I found out about DOS2. BG3 now feels short and unfinished to me compared to DOS2. The riddles and puzzles in DOS2 are so fun, combining and environment interaction is so much richer. My only complaint about DOS2, and truly it is the only one: lots of dog killing/dog suffering in it. Why? It is a pervasive theme having to kill dogs/not being able to save dogs/hearing stories of tortured and murdered dogs. Not sure what that sh*t was about, larian. Otherwise, incredible game.

I got the game for the first time ever 2 months ago and it is absolutely one of the best games ever made. You could argue that DOS2 is better than Baldur's Gate 3 - I would disagree for many reasons but in some ways DOS2 is better but BG3 wins in more in my opinion. Theres literally no reason not to own and play both games. These 2 games are literally the best games available to purchase on planet earth at least. I say this as someone who has been playing games for 30 years.

I like bg3 better cuz it’s zoomed in more and you can see the characters facial expressions and everything therefore feels more intense and better. The combat of dos2 may be better though. It’s really good and really complex and there is just so much choice. At the end of the day along with Witcher 3, these two are in my top three best games ever.
