DGO reduces noise shadows and underexposed areas. Many tests clearly demonstrate this. Comparing well exposed wide shots is missing the point.

I agree with the people that say there is more latitude in the shadows which is super helpful when filming moody stuff and you try to lift information. But, canon should have it as a setting on/off so that you can choose between better rolling shutter performance or more shadow detail.

Absolutely agree with you on this one!! The rolling shutter increase by having it on is pretty bad unforuntately.

Sorry but it's a bit dumb to compare well exposed shots and looking for something drastic. It's like in photography when you shoot in Jpeg vs RAW. The differences are huge when you start massaging the files. Same thing with 8bit vs 12 or 14bit

@@AndrewMurphyFilms any camera can look good outside. I would say you should have tested in an interior daylight situation. Go inside a building, preferably with not a lot of windows, and expose for the inside. Then compare the two files

To me the biggest reason I love the DGO is that you can underexpose your aroll a little bit or specifically expose for the highlights and avoid clipping and when you recover your shadows they are clean, super clean vs without dgo. Personally, this was one of the biggest reasons I actually got the C300 over the C500. When I graded under exposed c500 footage it was noticeably worse in the shadows at all framerates I just couldn't hack it.
@Makta972
@Makta972 2 жыл бұрын
And that a huge benefit. I really don't get the point of the video.

@@Makta972 I think it's just that, generally speaking, it's a subtle thing. But once you need to make changes to the image personally I find it's very valuable. The shadows are just so much more clean than any camera I've used in that price range, demolishes Sony in the shadows. So while on paper it might seem strange really need it, in practice it make a massive difference. The XF codec has so much more info in the shadows in clog2 than previous cameras including the c500 that I hope they keep expanding on the technology. Arri does a few things differently, using two full da converters and consuming a ton more power, but the principe is similar. Dual expose your photosites and read back very high dynamic ranges from that amazing signal. Personally I would take that over dual base isos anyday of the week.

From what I can see, A has darker but noisier shadows/black, while on B they're a little washed out but with less noise, so I'd say A is off and B is on. Hey, I got it right! 😄

how is it a lie, if it is useful when not setting the exposure right. thats a convenience thing, it makes it easier to have better information in the image when for whatever reason you dont expose perfectly from the start. so its an advantage. its like saying touch screen is a lie because if you correctly set the focus you dont need it. or that af in video is a lie, because if you manually focus its the same. or that having awb-lock is a lie, because you can set wb manually. well, yeah, its the same, but they are a convenience thing, that makes the filming easier, and sometimes faster. its about convenience, which is sort of a luxury, makes you put less effort or allows you to be sloppier and still get similar results. i dont see how its a lie, by that reasoning. like, mirrorless cameras are a lie, cuz you pay thousands ehen you could get an old 35mm camera and shoot film on it. yeah, you could, but its so not convenient and makes it so costly, that it makes it not an option most of the time. what i mean is, convenience is not a "lie". its something that makes it easier for you, and you pay for it, if you can and you want to spend less time/effort. should have been titled along the lines of "dgo is overrated", "dgo is not necessary" etc, but not "a lie". clickbait title, imo. i hit dislike because of that. and i dont have a canon.

It is a little strange to test this with proper exposure. The benefit of DGO is really in the shadows (as seen in the few examples of under exposure). A really good example of how the DGO sensor thrives would be in reviewing a latitude test and pulling back up under exposed images. For more info, check out Canon's white paper of the DGO sensor: downloads.canon.com/cinemaeos/DGO-Sensor-White-Paper.pdf Also, your title is clearly click-bait. Both of you agreed that there is a benefit to DGO, yet it says it’s “a lie!.” Come on, guys.

The main purpose of this video is to give a real look at what DGO actually does in everyday shooting. On paper info verses practical applications are very different, and if you know how to expose an image, the benefits aren't really that big. However, like me mentioned, if you are a run and gun shooter and don't often have the time to get perfect exposure, then this is where DGO will benefit you hugely.

DGO is not in the highlights. Those are the same. DGO digs deeper into the shadows. If you are in dark scenes and left the blacks/shadows in both, you will see the DGO shadows will have more data in them when you stretch them.
@AndrewMurphyFilms

That is true that DGO works best in the shadows, however because it is mixing 2 exposures, it slightly affects the highlgihts as well, just not as much.

I have read that with DGO off the rolling shutter goes from 16 to about 8 ms, thus becoming much better and canceling the jelly effect on fast camera movements . I do not own the camera, so I have a question: can DGO be turned on and off at will?
@AndrewMurphyFilms
@AndrewMurphyFilms 3 ай бұрын
You can't manually turn it off. Only when you change your framerate it will adjust

Hello Andrew! This is a bit off subject, but I was curious if maybe you had had any experience using the Control Ring Mount Adapter with the c70? I've been running the speedbooster for a while now, but I find myself wanting to try out the control ring adapter and return to the Super35 look on occasion. I am wondering if you can assign the ring to control the aperture. It comes with a click on the turn, but I read you can have canon declick it for a fee. Curious how smooth it would be, and if you can get a similar look to cinema lenses. I am also curious about how secure it is when mounted on the body and if there is any play while using focus motors.
@AndrewMurphyFilms
@AndrewMurphyFilms Жыл бұрын
Hey! I haven't had much of a play with the RF adjustment rings. However remember you won't really be able to use a focus motor cause it doesn't have hard stops. So will be a pain to setup.

This is a cool test. Thank you for posting. At 6:24, were both cameras recording Long GOP? Or was the DGO footage being shot at a higher bit rate as well? I'll just say, I have used the C300 Mk2 for years + hundreds of hours and when I bought the C70, I really expected a much larger leap in the quality and low light performance. The two cameras produce nearly the same image in my experience. Yes, if you really really push the C300ii, you can get really nasty results in the shadows, (blue streaking etc,) but for the most part the two cameras look very similar and match quite well. The C70 does have a nice grain structure / texture. There is something nice about it. The smaller size is nice, but the C300ii is a steal, especially if you don't need high speed 4k. I think the market for the Canon C70 is a lot different than any of the past Cinema EOS cameras offering 10 bit. Many owners might think "wow this is so clean," but yeah the Canon 300ii is like 7 years old and is pretty damn clean as well.

Shouldn't it be very visible during night videos with bright lights, where you expose for the lights and then have to recover the shadows? Fireworks for example.

@J_HNP

There isn’t necessarily a switch to turn it in or off. Due to the time the camera takes to calculate the two exposures used to produce image, it will NOT work on the 4k (super35) sensor with any frame rate beyond 60p. It will, however, stay active on all frame rates in the super16 (cropped setting).
