I have also been affected by the fear of locking out on the leg press. As a gym noob (only six months so far), I try to not fully lock out, but I realize now that this fear might be overblown by social media. I mean, I lock out my legs underneath my body weight all the time (and I am heavy). Also when squatting with my body weight + 60 kg do I lock out my legs, so it doesn't really make sense. The biggest thing to be aware of, I guess, is that you don't get some kind of twisting motion or weird angles for your knees, but that goes for everyday usage of the same joints.
@soots-stayingoutofthespotl54952 жыл бұрын
Forget the actual exercises for a minute, this video is great at demonstrating one thing: try and avoid comparing yourself physically to anyone else in the gym. You may think you look pretty good when you see yourself in the mirror at home (and frankly if that's the case, you probably do), but as soon as you get to the gym, and much-bigger guys start featuring in the reflection, you somehow resemble a rake. Eugene has an absolutely fantastic physique in the context of his own channel and when compared to most gym-goers, but here he looks positively small, and it's tempting to think he has underdeveloped teardrops or hams etc. He doesn't, at all. It's calves for me; they look alright at home and people at the gym have actually been complimentary before, but they seem to completely disappear in those bloody walls of mirrors!

Bonus: Drop the weight and do more reps (5 plates, then 4 plates, then 3 plates) - Keep your feet flat on the platform - Slowly lower the weight down, then push it back up *Squats:* 1. Do 5-10 reps of 3 sets - Stand up straight and proud - Pause for a moment at the bottom of the squat - Slowly lower yourself down, then stand back up Remember to adjust the weights and reps to fit your fitness level and goals! This routine focuses on exercises that work your legs, including your hamstrings, quadriceps, and glutes.

If you do have hyper mobility / hyper laxity in your joints, learn to lock out *without* hyperextension! KT tape is your friend if you can handle adhesives. Tape so you can feel the pull as you hit the point of hyperextension. Pay close attention to those small muscles that are screaming for you to hyperextend. Target those too. You need the awareness to limit hyperextension during every day activities and this will help to lower the amount of rolling, sublexing, and dislocating you experience. Full range of motion does not include hyperextension if you have EDS or similar reasons for hyper mobility. I am 24 years post partial SCI injury and genetically hyper mobile. You can weight train with these conditions, just be smart with about how your function is different to the average.

The leg press lockout commentary is pure gold. It's hard to understand because if you say, squat heavy, you feel safe and strong in a locked out position, but if you remember that the leg press allows for some extreme weights you would never squat, it makes sense.
@Yokatosh2 жыл бұрын
The angle on the leg press doesn't put 100% of the weight on your legs since gravity acts in a downward force. That's why you can leg press a ton
@PaulSteere2 жыл бұрын
I’d also add if you’re using a full ROM like these lads and trying to stretch and toast your quads, then you’ll be using *significantly* less weight than the average leg-presser who strives to load as many plates as they can then proceeds to move the sled 6-12 inches down and back up again. I would say though that when I used to do yoga classes there were quite a few women (as in it didn’t seem incredibly rare) who were hypermobile (no surprise they were attracted to training flexibility) and they often got drilled about the importance of developing the awareness stop at what would be full extension for most in certain poses and not go further just because they could, as it put their knees/elbows into compromised positions. In a gym environment nobody is likely to provide them with the same reminder.
@mercantile18032 жыл бұрын
@@Yokatosh yeah I know and what I'm saying is: 1. you are probably more stable locked out standing under equivalent loads because the nature of standing under load requires balance and a greater use of corresponding muscles 2. the "safety" of a leg press machine and the ability to load hundreds of kg onto it encourages a casual lifter to push their joint stability limits, even if a fraction of the weight they've loaded on to the leg press is actually being held up

2 times a week is good for hypertrophy for all muscles. If you want to work on strength as well as hypertrophy, you can start with your heavier exercises and then finish with higher rep exercises. Or you can do a few heavy sets and one lighter set on each exercise.

I'm interested in the science behind the complete lockout when pressing/squatting because every physical therapist I've ever had, which is about 8 physical therapists(I've had 2 surgeries on each knee in 2010-2011), over the course of 12 years has told me to not completely lockout at the top of the squat to take it to 179 degrees the furthest but to leave a little room. What's the debate and/or science and kinesiology on this when lifting and is it only applied to legs or all joints?
@passerby57352 жыл бұрын
If you have hypermobile joints or a history of knee injury, then "play it safe" is usually the advice I've heard. But I do feel like some of these word-of-mouth cues that don't have much research behind them are really just there to avoid lawsuits.
