Also to tie into the anticapitalist themes you picked up on, it's very funny that Fazbear Entertainment is so devoted to the idea of replacing humans with robots when we've seen repeatedly how dangerous and error-prone those robots are (not to mention how ludicrously expensive they must be!). I think it reflects humorously on the way IRL businesses will move hell and high water to avoid paying people wages, or letting them unionise

I assume you meant "paying people's living wage" which is nebulous because the company is paying you what you are worth to the company and not what bills you want to cover with the paycheck the company provides you. And if you didn't mean that well, not paying employees is illegal and creates an issue with the IRS. Unionizing is a whole kettle of fish too. Adding a middle man between you and your employer is good up until the point you want to do something the union doesn't want you to do. You know, and you end up with two managers. You're on site, on the job manager and then your union leader, and maybe I've been working the wrong jobs but having one manager was too much most of the time. The reality is that the evil capitalist trope makes it easy to explain away why Freddy Fazbear continues to exist when five people being murdered would have brought a company to its knees in terms of bad PR much less have it be children which would probably end up being a national headline. Freddy Fazbear sells Pizza. He's not our government who can kill countless people and still maintain enough good PR for people to vote for them. Having said that. Freddy takes the White House is a great idea.

I don’t think FNAF is political in the sense of “one party bad, other party good”, but I think it does take inspiration from Scott’s faith which isn’t political if you ask me. I myself am Catholic, and when I play games like Persona it is interesting to see how the developers used the archangels for example. My favorite Persona is Maria, based on Mary, the Holy Virgin and mother of Jesus. In the case of FNAF, we do see some elements of Christianity sprinkled in, such as UCN being a limbo or hell where Afton is condemned.

I think in general, mascot horror is somehow anti-capitalist in a way. In this sense, we are fighting against the outgrowths of companies that have a lot of dirt on them, and good examples outside of Fnaf would be Poppy playtime, for example, where we find that the toy company playtime has made orphans into toys or in bendy and the ink machine and his secrets we also find out that Joey draw Studios was also a pretty shitty place to work. In both cases we see that human life is simply a resource that can either be used for work or processed straight away as a product. that the people there were actually the biggest monsters, and actually their hideous creations themselves are somehow victims. At the same time, nostalgia is also being dismantled, where the innocent thought you saw on television or on the big screen is suddenly corrupted with background knowledge. tale Foundry has made a fantastic video about it, which also talks about analogue horror and goes in the same direction. and of course we would have known more now how the sausage is made, or who the sausage maker and then we are shocked when we know that such terrible things were in the production of our favorite things, it is somehow a horror of knowledge

All art is political some art just has politics you hate more. Centrist Politics is typically seen a "neutral" stance, sort of like making all your characters white. Yeah, it's a large majority of people in the USA, but that doesn't mean people exist outside that. Every statement is political because politics is driven by emotion and opinion, and that's the core of the human experience. As a video game scholar once said, "Gamers actually love politics and seeing them, and those who say they don't just wish they were seeing different politics." -Harris Bomberguy

Hero Worship was my *exact* thought when you were describing the story B-7. The thought that followed was in the Cyberpunk universe, there is a mental toll that cybernetic parts take on a person. The more conversions you have, the less human you feel unless you get special counselling to remind you of your humanity. The story sounds like someone meshed a trauma response (the emulation and dissociation as an attempt to cope) with that sort of "how human is still human" Ship of Theseus concept from Cyberpunk.

Good video. I always like it when people analyse works that 'don't have politics' -- they're much more important to examine carefully than works which wear their politics on their sleeve. One minor theme which has always stuck with me when I think about FNAF is the character of Afton. Namely, the fact that he commits these horrible crimes and gets away with them, apparently not raising any suspicion while he was alive. Afton is drawn right from the archetype of the classic IRL serial killer -- a white American man who led a double life, was probably well-respected in his community, and who was above suspicion because of it. He's Ted Bundy and BTK. I'm not saying Scott intended to make a commentary on how patriarchy and race enable certain kinds of people to get away with crimes, but the influences he drew on for Afton lead to that being one of the messages of the series regardless. Turns out that the cops won't stop serial killers, instead we need to rely on the literally paranormal to send them to hell, lol.

As someone who is also left leaning and an older fan of the series who feels at least somewhat politically educated, thank you so so so much for talking about this stuff. And I'm sorry, but I'm gonna rant for a second. I genuinely feel insane and like I am being gaslit when I see others, who are usually younger fans (not to be ageist or generalize), say stuff like "nah thats weird that isn't an intended theme or a proper reading. Stop being political about it" when its often so blatant or at the very least something that is very easy to interpret with specific politics. (And in the case of stuff like gay and trans robots, completely harmless?) Because, as you said, thats just kinda how all art is? It doesn't have to be made with all the exact political intentions in mind inherently, but it can not be separated wholely and often should not if the work wants to have any substance. I think people often forget or don't realize (or sadly more realistically, the education system doesn't teach them) that politics isn't just "do they go red party or blue party?" Like, yeah there is a lot of nuance to be had, as there always is, but that anti-corporate stuff in particular is almost always super obvious. Likewise, when it came to the donation situation that to this day (hell, I noticed some even in THIS VERY COMMENT SECTION), people still get weirdly defensive over on Scott's behalf. Even when the people with legitimate reasons to be upset don't condone any of the harassment and just want the situation to be understood properly. Personally, I am still sore that Scott did that. It makes "sense" but it doesn't make it right by my book, and the fact that, to my knowledge, the closest thing to an apology has been the donations given to several LGBTQIA+ support organizations and the very large one you mention. Which, while very nice and appreciated, still isn't an actual up front apology or a clear statement of "Hey sorry about that, I didn't think it would be upsetting and maybe everyone has a point about these other people I decide to support and follow who can AND HAVE made legitimate changes to the law to make things worse for the groups of people upset." If anything, he originally doubled down on all of it in the community post he brought the situation up in and refused to apologize, and both he and everyone else swept things away with just a "oh you can't blame the man thats just his upbringing! And look at all the bad stuff happening to him because of *you people*. And look at all his donations to the gays! God just get over it 🙄" as though somebody is just inherently tied to always support the groups and belief systems that they grew up with, even if they feel differently now. It just makes me a tad upset I suppose, especially when younger LGBTQIA+ come up saying they don't care. It makes me go "but why? You should!" You don't have to stop liking the series, and you don't have to hate Scott, but at least have some kind of critical eye, please. Its ok to look at something someone unequivocally did (not just random twitter speculations or falsified info or whatever) and go "hey thats kinda bad and makes me feel a bit upset." And then not crucify the person or be out for their blood, but just hold them accountable for their words and actions to a certain degree. You don't have to obsess over and/or go into a culture war for every political difference that pops up in something you like, but also don't just be apathetic to things that happen because it's easier and you don't want to stop enjoying something. I say this on behalf of everyone's own good, too.

I think part of the reason that Cawthon's donations were such a shock to people is that, despite the obvious (him being a Texas Christian), FNaF's only political content is a biting satire of corporate America. The overarching villain of FNaF is, at this point, capitalism. A company that allows killers to grow within it and sacrifices the lives of its employees and customers alike to make a little more cash. On the topic of the donations, I can't look at the subsequent charity donation as absolving Cawthon. Charity donations at this point have become just an act of paying indulgences. "Hey if I give a fat stack of cash to a charity who supports one of the groups I hurt will you leave me alone?" The fact of the matter is that Republican politicians running the government have much, much more power to affect change than any charity will ever have, and they've hurt a lot more people than just us in the LGBT+ community. Like, between them, McConnell and Trump are responsible for stacking the Supreme Court entirely in the Republicans' favour and now federally-protected abortion's gone! Women are having to fly out of Cawthon's home state to terminate pregnancies because of the men that Cawthon supported. I might be alone in that, but it's how I feel about it.

i feel like this last paragraph u wrote always gets overlooked when people talk abt the topic. donating to charity is one of the most basic things you can do to clear up your image and people just... accept it? like i admit i cant really think of anything that he would be able to do to clear his image for everyone so idk. also i find it odd that everyone just ignores that those donations didnt just hurt queer people but POC as well. idk whats up with that but that fact makes me jst uncomfortable for some reason

Personally from what I've seen the past few years I would be hard pressed to take someone seriously if they thought either democrats or republicans had their best interests in mind. Everyone has the right to see what each candidate is talking about doing or has done and make their decision to support them based on that. There's a decent amount of people in the entertainment industry who I don't always agree with, but at the end of the day, I'm still listening to their music, playing their games, watching their movies/shows, etc because it's what I enjoy.

Ever since the first game, the series has made jabs at corporate negligence and this comedically capitalist stereotype of "anything for money", so we can debate about many things, but I think calling the series not political is actually nonsensical. It might not be the focus of the main storyline, it might be absent in some games, that's all true, but whenever Fazbear Entertainment is mentioned, some satire of the capitalist profit motive always follows. That much is undeniable.

I think serious, unbiased political analysis in art is underrated. I think people online often lump all political discussion into the "culture war" as a cheap excuse to avert responsibility because they're too childish and out-of-touch with the realities of the world to have any knowledge on politics. What you said is absolutely true, that all art is ultimately political. But zoomers hear "politics" and immediately think "culture war".

Governments have representatives to a specific groups of people and there are many types of people to represent all physically, mentally, regionally, and spiritually different.. everyone is spitting in everyone's food as you'd put it. Its pure irony that people would get upset over donation/support because they are doing the same thing with their ideals and representatives. I rather think it's people who were never politically inclined so they are not very educated on politics being indoctrinated.

I do think that Scott and Steelwool made it seem like a romantic relationship because they might want the Fandom to go out of their way and let their shipping fantasies go wild.
