Most young men in the U.S. and Canada can't afford a cigar, or a decent chair to sit in. They have to consider how they can make and save more money. Back yard... yeah. It's not "Married with Children' rules. Masses of joe jobbers can just barely afford renting an apartment...they don't get a back yard, a house with a garage, a car, and a home with rooms for 2+ children to have their own.

Splitting people into type a and type b is the first false assumption. I've seen insecure anxious to impress type a people become so burnt out they are some of the most "lazy" on the planet..... Because laziness is the laziest word in the dictionary..... The system is built to breed mental health problems in millions of people

That sitting down reading enjoying a cigar moment has always made me feel guilty, I’m always in this mindset of “I should be doing this I should be doing that, I need to do this I need to do that.” As if my what’s supposed to be relaxation just fuels my anxiety. You feel like you waste time by relaxing but you feel like you’re wasting life by working all the time.
@Joshin-kf1vz
@Joshin-kf1vz Ай бұрын
100% feel this. When i try to relax, that voice will come along and tell me I should be doing something productive instead. It makes it where sometimes I can't even enjoy recreational activities because there's guilt knowing there are other things that I could be doing instead. But that's the thing, with life there's always something that'll need done, it doesn't end until we take our last breath. I'm trying to find that balance just like this video talks about, there's a time to work hard and there's a time to recuperate/think/recharge so I'm ready for whatever the next challenge is. Without that balance, I'm either going to burn myself out working too hard all the time, or I'll fall behind not working enough.

I’ve been workshopping this theory that “Hustle Culture” is the “Impossible Beauty Standard” equivalent for men. We see rich ripped men on social media who are getting up at 4am to grind and no matter how much you do, you could always be better. Dewayne is a welcome voice of “It’s alright to be who you are and be where you are in life. Find contentment in that.” I think I need that message these days.
@stevendouglas3781

It’s more like one led into the other. The hyper social-media vanity of women caused men to try and become the man that kind of chick wants. If most women were fine with 50K a year, down to earth, well balanced guys then there wouldn’t be any need for hustle culture.

One problem is that labourers can hardly afford a backyard in which to think from anymore. Before North America lost tens of thousands of factories through globalization, men hustled at jobs in their communities, could afford to raise a family, and had stake in society. Hustle culture isn’t doing much to rebuild Detroit, Gary Indiana, Youngstown Ohio, and the list goes on.

Grew up in a small town in eastern nc. Everyone worked at the local factories. Those plants running 3 shifts could employ not only our town but damn near all the surrounding counties. Parents raised kids sent them off to college or the military and people were enjoying good lives. As mentioned after globalization they told us a man or woman who'd wotked there whole lives on an assembly line was going to go to dchool get retrained in auto repair, it or nursing which was utter bs. The sad part is we spend so much time trying to stay afloat, that all we csn do is sit back and watch them rule and ruin the world. Sadly no politician can save us from whats coming.

There's no middle ground in this country anymore. It's either 100% or 0%. There is none of what he talks about. There is no "Well, I can work 40 hours and show up for a paycheck then go home and enjoy my life". Because that 40 hour job is just enough for rent, car, and wifi. Forget a family or anything else. Weekend golf outings? Too expensive for the average 40 hour job. So in order to have the money, you need to sacrifice all your time, or find that job that can pay very well for 40 hours. I guess "hustle culture" is a mindset, but in another sense it really is the only way people can get ahead. So while I agree with what Dewayne says, it's not realistic. It doesn't apply in a post WWII world. 50+ years ago it worked, it doesn't work today. Everything is a transaction today. Serving others is seen as being weak. Everyone these days is self-serving, trying to get as much out of someone else as they possibly can. Resources, attention, emotions, without giving anything back.

I found when I stopped living outside my means financially, I was a lot happier and had more money to do whatever. At first this seemed like I was being left behind and people thought I’d quit on life, but it was quite the opposite. I had less expensive stuff, (that I found I really didn’t need anyway) but I gained so much more in quality of life and had more time to dedicate to what I really wanted to do, and learnt so much more cool stuff. Step off the slave train and be left behind. Best decision I ever made. I earn less money and do less work but I have more money….who’d of thought. I did the hustle in my late 20s starting my family. We bought a house, only had 2 kids, but started a forth job during the year, not all 4 at once. I am a teacher, so I would do afterschool programming, summer school and a retail part-time or doordash. We were able to pay cash for remodels, stay out of debt, etc. Only did this for a little over 2 years. We now have 6 kids. I could never do that now, but glad I did. I have higher education, more experience so higher pay. I would say to not let the "hustle" mentality become a habit. I don’t think that’s exactly what he means. It’s more about the work “ending” at some point in the day. Productivity is proven to drop in most humans after 50 hours per week. I think passive income is a great way to get around this. I do believe scheduling and discipline is critical. You have 168 hours per week if you sleep 56 (I’m counting the wind down) and work 50 you have 62 to spread between your family, keeping up your home, the gym and friendships. It’s a tight squeeze.

I'm 39 and nowhere near where I want to be in life but I'm in school pursuing a profession that will allow me to hopefully create what he is talking about - balance in life. Didn't have a dad who ever taught me how to be a man. Mom over compensated but that obviously didn't fill the void so I sort of aimlessly wandered through my twenties and most of my thirties. I am sober, motivated and better off than I have ever been thankfully. Dewayne is right - keep it simple, take care of yourself so that you can take care of your family or the people in your life and be steady, caring and balanced in everything that you do. I would also say that finding a vocation (or career) that you are proud of and that you want to do everyday makes the world seem like a better place to be apart of.

There's no way for your mind to be engaged and focused on problem-solving for like 14 hours every day... It needs down time and effective sleep to decompress and recalibrate. People who claim they are working all day usually spend the majority of that time doing menial tasks on auto-pilot... I would love to see 99% of people do like an engineering gig where they are building a device, wiring the electronics, doing the math, coding the software, testing stuff and do that for 12 hours consecutively every day... I can work 16 hours a day too if half of that is spent being a library receptionist sitting behind a desk, and the rest is some auto-pilot thing i've done a million times before i don't even have to spend brain power on doing it... just muscle memory...

Ill be completely honest. From the age of 9 years old was the first day i nearly accepted to move on from this world. Nothing i had ever done was enough and i never felt like i got what i earned. Moving through to highschool id have my ups and downs but the trend continued. No matter how hard i tried in school and socially nothing i could ever do had meant anything to my father. I can be the better man and say hey hes been through his own rough patch and hes only taking it out on me because he cant handle his own, but i couldnt be that person for 18-20 years straight. Too many times i came far too close to taking myself out and the only things stopping me was the real people who seemed to love me... but i kept trying to hold onto the hope that i could help my father- to make him better and show him the good in the world. All that energy i spent and it almost all seems to make it worse. Sometimes theres some people in this world you cant save. Sometimes some people dont deserve it. From a very early age i made it a goal to never hate anyone nor to give up. I guess in my own way im still hanging onto those beliefs one way or another. After all, Ive got my mom, my brothers, and my grandma to enjoy life with. If id had taken myself out i dont think they would stay either. I just wish he could underdtand that. But hey... were just too emotional i guess. Always have been and always will be. Id rather be in touch with my emotions than to outcast them altogether. The way I see hustle culture, there is no virtue to it. A lot of it involves vanity and gluttony and there is no purpose to their work habits. A man needs a virtuous purpose to his work or it’s meaningless. The hard work isn’t the issue, it’s the lack of virtue.

I went from a lazy-needing goggins message type that enjoyed the cigar and relaxing too much for my own good, then swung to be staying hard and feeling guilty when relaxing. I'm discovering my balance, I do gotta say, nothing brings happiness more than trying your absolute best everyday, you balance work beautifully by reflecting: "Did I work enough? Ok, did I spend enough time with my family, was I present? Ok, how can I improve on my work ethic? How can I improve on my warmth side for those close to me? How can I have a day, in which I complete, the woman who is in my house goes 'Wow there's no man like you'? How do I make my kids say 'Dad's a superhero' not just physically, but emotionally, how do I be the rock for my family? How do I serve unconditional love? How do I give tough love, in a way for it to benefit someone?" Haha I be thinking all this. We are humans, meant to be balanced. There's days I'm more goggin's/prime mike tyson minded, and get so much done I don't even know how to top my record. and other day's where the cigar comes out and sitting down lol, I love it, finding the balance. It keeps life interesting. Oh, this day I'm deep in the mental lab, this day I'm kicking back and laughing with the boys, what's next?

I did the hustle culture for about 5 years in my 20’s. I was an equipment operator as my full-time job. Then in the evenings I would valet at my local country club and on weekends I worked maintenance at the local shopping mall. I definitely feel like I lost five years of my life, but I was able to save a lot and I set myself up nicely down the road. At the time I told myself “I might as well do it while I can”

1:16 - In our, "Bigger, better, newer, more, More, MORE!!!" culture, there's really something to be said for taking a moment to appreciate and enjoy what we _already_ have. With each signpost we reach on the journey to our larger, long-term goals, stopping to say, "Look how far I've come!" sets us up to (1) enjoy life through that sense of accomplishment, (2) motivate ourselves to reach that _next_ signpost, and (3) imbue ourselves with the confidence to accomplish things that...far off on the horizon...may seem out of reach. Ambition is necessary to create a good life, but even Michelangelo stopped to savor the beauty of his work before moving on to the next project. (A good cigar, and the "ceremony" of savoring it, can create a perfect _meditative_ opportunity!) Such an approach to life can also be _balanced_ with the mantra, "Enough IS enough." Many people never realize how good they have it because they're too busy chasing what others have. P.S. I love that _Dewayne's_ meaning in life _requires_ service to _others,_ not just the improvement of one's _own_ conditions; better to be _appreciated_ than merely _envied._ Yeah?

I love this message. I will say, and have said for some time, at one point in America you could out work the economy. Now you can’t. Men’s contentment where they are is probably the biggest lesson anyone can currently learn. To be ok, where you are today. You can always hope and work towards more but to be content is a very hard lesson to learn.

Exactly a pure example of me. When I was 20 -25 yrs old I was drinking energy drinks coffee, hustling working overtime, working out with weights 2 hours a day, partying hard every weekend, burning the candle at both ends I was invincible. I could outwork anyone, making money, Till I hit about 30 years old, your body will start letting you know really quick when it starts breaking down, for the first time in my life my body started getting sick and made me RELAX and I felt so guilty for just resting in the couch. For those guys that think they can “just always muscle it up” your body gonna give out eventually. Now that I have experience I know that hard working young men don’t become more successful they become used up and abused, honestly now that I see these 20 year olds overworking it’s almost a beta quality like insecure trying to prove themselves I’ve been promoted and very successful , not by killing myself but by working smarter and staying steady and slow

I sooooo love and appreciate this man. I watch his videos pretty regularly and always find value. HOWEVER, I think this outlook is the ideal, and assumes that we don’t live in a world where men HAVE to hustle, to succeed in a dying economy and a hellish job market. Men have to hustle to succeed at all, a constant struggle to beat inflation, to be able to support a family. And so many good men who ARE trying to work hard are not able to succeed because they exist in a world that’s actively working against them. So men who want a family have to hustle their asses off and kill themselves with stress. OR, give up and play Xbox all day. The middle ground, where people can work hard and make enough to support a family while also having a balanced life, is disappearing. The baseline amount of money now required to just be able to afford the basic comforts, a home and food for your family, has gotten so wildly out of control that it REQUIRES that of men - zero balance, just hustle. People are stuck between a rock and a hard place and their ability to work hard and succeed AND have peace is being ripped away from them. I think we need to recognize that there are so many good men out there who want to be balanced but the world is actively working against it for them. I do 100% believe that his point still stands, and is the “correct” view. I just think there’s a lot of complex factors working against men being able to achieve this ideal, and it has to be recognized to see the full scope.

Everybody goes through different stages at different ages. There’s not a one size fits all. We’re built for different things. Our purposes in life is different. Two things can be true at the same time. Perhaps the balance is this man’s energy mixed with David Goggins. You have to find your recipe in life, your flavor. I’m 39 years old Americano Pilipino, I own 3 companies in the U.S. and in motion to building a multilayered business in the Philippines. Also have 2 teenager daughters that are almost out of high school. Plan on having two more kids in the Philippines in the next 5 years. Being a father is not my only purpose in life but I do feel it is one of them same thing with owning my businesses. It’s more to it than just the money. These companies will outlive me. It’s part of the legacy in the world. Making my mark. What’s your purposes?

It is pretty hard to argue with "balance." But what's the metric? How do you determine if your life is balanced? Technically, if you work 40 hrs/wk, your life is unbalanced in leisure. That's the problem with giving esoteric advice.
