Is it normal for my pool pump motor to be hot to the touch?
First off, never touch a running pump motor. Not only does the pump naturally get hot but if the pump is not properly bonded you could receive a nasty electric shock. So hands off.
How Hot Can a Pool Pump Motor Get?
Anything above 115 degrees Fahrenheit is going to register as hot to the human touch. Motors can reach up to 200 degrees before bearings can begin to breakdown, so 115-200 degrees is a safe “hot” temperature for your motor. A pool pump motor uses insulation classified as level ‘B’ that allows the motor’s internal temperature to reach up to 256 degrees. The motor is also equipped with an overload protector which will shut down your motor in overheating scenarios. The overload protector is a sure sign your motor is pulling too much juice and/or overworking.
Also keep in mind, that your electric motor is enclosed in a metal housing, sexposed to the summer sun, it’s going to get hot. These motors are able to handle most temperatures that Mother Nature can throw at it. you should not worry about the temperature of your motor unless your overload protector is tripping.

Bought a replacement pump motor from Inyo Pools and it runs fine but the case is so hot , our motor info label turned black and unreadable due to the hot motor case. Pool owner for 28 years and never seen one this hot.

As a new pool owner/new home owner in general your videos have provided a wealth of knowledge. I am curious, I know you said the pump can handle there own but is it worth adding like a shaded cover over the pump? It is in direct sunlight in some of the hottest Texas summer days. Would providing any shade to the pump be beneficial or not really? When I say shade I mean something mounted off on the brick to our fence not obstructing the motor in anyway. Thanks!

Very good question! Yes, it would be a good idea to get a shield to ward off some of the direct sunlight. There are things called motor covers that slip over the motor, creating a little vented doghouse the motor can still breath but be protected from the elements. The motor protector is matched to the model of motor, so you'll need to identify which motor you have first. But here is an example of a motor cover: www.inyopools.com/Products/07501352015137.htm

Good stuff. Rebuilt a junk Craiglist 1.5HP motor and was wondering if the wiring is no good since the hottest part runs around 148F. Looks like it is normal after all.

Well I take it back. Bent up the governor while reassembling the motor; that took away the startup circuit and made the motor spin the wrong way. With the fixed governor, the motor spins at about 95F without a load.

my problem is that my pool pump starts fine but if I have to turn it off for any reason and then turn it back on it will just hum. Then I have to wait about 45 min for it to cool down before it will start again. It's been like this since I purchased it brand new two seasons ago. The local store wouldn't exchange it. It's a 230 volt US Motor 1.5 Horsepower.

That sounds like a bad start capacitor.

Motors/ whole pumps only have a one year warranty. So the best time to purchase one is mid or close to end of season. That way if it's purchase July 28th. This year, it'll be covers til the same day next year. (Obviously. ) But most people don't consider the winter time or off season. So if you bought it in the winter or beginning of season, you go through the whole season with it just fine. You then winterize your pool, it sits over winter and then when you goto open your pool around the same day as last your when you opened. The warranty will already have ended. If not it'll be within a week or two of ending.
