I did the same thing when a buddy of mine first got into the game. I had foolishly spent myself broke on the market board, but wanted to gift him some HQ gear so he wouldnt have to worry about re-gearing with how fast levelling is these days. And so, the crafting/gathering grind began. And then, when he finally got the game, I remembered that you can't trade with people on the free trial.

You'd not get through it even if you somehow found the XP to level a warrior or a paladin to 90 to solo them if that were possible, simply because you'd be ilvl capped. Much more of the game can be soloed than people think. I was surprised myself when I could kill Nidhogg in the trial at the end of Heavensward solo as a 70 something paladin, since the queue was taking awfully long for some reason.

I love these kinds of challenges, this series is a brilliant idea. Before Praetorium got changed to a 4 player dungeon, I did a stream where I ran it solo, synced. I did it on GNB because I liked the idea of beating Gaius at his own game, and because I thought the mitigation and healing it offers at level 50 would be handy. It was easily the most fun I had streaming this game. I had to think really carefully about strategy and approach, use weird stuff like blinding potions for extra mitigation, use healing potions basically on cooldown, and move *very* precisely. I worked out a great strat for handling Nero, I took out Gaius in one try, but ultimately, Ultima Weapon was the run killer for me. I'm excited to see what the run looks like now that the dungeon has been completely remade and split up.

Just a tip that not many people know for Sastasha, you can actually toggle slow walk and go through the whole clams room without aggroing anything! As long as you don't walk inside mobs you should be fine. If you hug the left wall on the very last pull of the dungeon, you can skip the last pull as well but it's easier to fail.

That crafting segment was exactly how crafting my own gatherer and crafter sets went for 1 to max because I didn't really want spend massive amounts of gil buying gear off the mb or vendors so I just gathered and killed mobs to make my own lol

Me too! I leveled my crafters & gatherers solo 1-80 (except mining) and goodness was it a drag. Even with a guide it was so easy to forget an item or two so I'd travel all over, gather mats, sit down for that satisfying craft session, only to realize I'm missing something or don't have enough. But it did feel good once I hit max on all my jobs and was able to craft my own self a set of the max level crafted gear. Haven't gone back for the level 90 grind yet though maybe some day. It was also super cute to be able to craft myself crafting gear as I leveled and I was walking around looking like a mess.

I really enjoyed your video here (later parts as well) it's a super fun idea and your editing and sharing of strategies hits all the right spots. It inspired me to go and give a swing at my own edition of this challenge, only a few things, that I changed up. I allowed myself to use quest rewards, mostly to just get on with the crafting a bit faster and I skipped having to do any NPC purchaces at all that way. If I get too strong items later from quests I'm not aware of I'll likely skip those items. Also been keeping away from teleporting, just because I'm a masochist I guess, I like the as little fast travel as possible, so just using that one boat between Limsa and the main land rest is only if MSQ needs me to do it for some reason, like the airship tour. A small nitpick, just so you're aware there's a Tenacity main food with all the right stats, that do not require any milk or other NPC materials like the 'Walnut Bread' did, but it takes WAY longer to get at, it is the 'Ishgardian Muffin' at lvl 53. Just for not draining you out, I would fully agree with not going there since you do allow some NPC purchaces, which is all fine and good. Besides it's the approach to handling dungeons that got you spurred and it's really a joy to watch, so please keep at it, I'll try and match your step through the dungeons for sure, you put a lot of work into it and I look forward to see if I'm up to match it. [edit] corrected a grammatical error.

IMO the NPC restriction was a bit unreasonable, since NPC shops are available in almost any single-player RPG (and all the restriction does is force some extra grinding of crafting materials). I'd be curious to see how doable the dungeons/boss fights are at higher levels with the level sync. I have a feeling that Sastasha might have been the limit with level sync turned on, since I think a group of mobs is usually going to do more total damage than most bosses (and in a less controllable way where you can't avoid most of it).

This is such a cool idea, but it's so extreme and feels mind-numbing. I've always wondered what it would be like playing FFXIV as a real, solo Final Fantasy experience. Since Duty Support would be pretty complete up to end of Endwalker by 7.0, it would be cool to see this played with slightly tweaked ruleset: - All dungeons in duty support (or with main character NPCs) - Unsynced (because Final Fantasy games never sync levels) - Echo silenced - Can only buy equipment from NPCs (since every Final Fantasy game has NPC shops) Only exceptions would be trials solo (this might be hard for Shadowbringers and Endwalker), and of course Crystal Tower. Have a sub! I look forward to seeing this further!

this series inspired me to start working on a stupid challenge run of my own (no teleports, no inter-city-state airship, only allowed to equip self-crafted gear and lv1 weathered weapons/tools, no buying mats from MB or vendors) and i did find a solution to the lv5 gear problem that i think is more satisfying (though did still require me to break my rules once to buy exactly 2 moko grass): start in ul'dah or gridania as a DoW, because you can travel freely around the continent and enter both city-states if you start there, but (as far as i'm aware) la noscea is completely locked off by a ferry you can't use until The ____ Envoy so it is an island to its own. if you start there you're stuck there and if you start outside you can't enter, until well after the gear check. but leatherworker is capable of crafting a full left side of ilvl5+ gear earliest, which was crucial for me. (if you allow wearing the clothes you're born into the world with, which are already il5, all you need is a hat. but i chose to take those clothes off immediately and not use them) if you start in gridania, you'll eventually look at the wiki and find that in order to get the animal sinew you require for most early ltw recipes and some of the gear you need, you will have to hike all the way over to central thanalan (past lv32 birds) _((and maybe if you're extra lucky on the way you wind up getting killed by odin because you stepped up to emote at the crowd and the extremely tiny lalafell odin blended in with them completely, just as a totally hypothetical scenario))_ and slaughter shrews for their sinew because *nothing in the entirety of the black shroud is capable of dropping it* . either way you'll need to make that hike at some point because you need to unlock crafters and gatherers from both cities before continuing, but i think it might have been more efficient for me to start in ul'dah. if you're allowing teleports it doesn't matter either way since you only need to walk once but. travel efficiency is pretty important for my run lmao anyway once you've killed enough small animals for their skins, hides, and sinew, and gathered latex to make rubber, you will find you can easily make most of a left side at il5, *except* the head and pants. i didn't think of it til later but goldsmith's brass circlets are fully capable of being made without smithing/armorcraft AND without harvesting or quarrying, so if you allow wearing starting gear then you can definitely get geared up without needing to equip any quest reward gear or buy any ingredients. but the pants are still a problem, because there are none available in ARR that don't require cloth/thread. there are lv40+ pants that use woolen cloth, but in order to make that you'd need to get wvr high enough to *make* woolen cloth which is impossible without having harvesting mats along the way. and harvesting/quarrying is an issue because it requires a scythe/hammer. and those are made by bsm, who is locked away on its island so the only way to receive and use a scythe without completing the Envoy quest is to use the scythe you receive from the btn quests, but because that's not a lv1 weathered tool it's not allowed under my ruleset. you *can* obtain 40 moko grass as a reward from the first wvr quest to fuel the rest of your lv5 gear needs easily, but that requires an initial cost of 2 moko grass to make hempen thread to turn in. so ultimately i had to decide, equip the cheater scythe for One gathering point, or relinquish 4 gil for 2 moko grass from the guild shop so that the rest could expand from there. and since there are recipes that require mats that can only be purchased from vendors anyway, i decided buying the grass was the lesser of 2 evils. once you get those 40 grass from Rose you can throw together some thread and cloth and easily finish gearing up for inspection, and once you've unlocked access to la noscea you can get to the point of crafting your own scythes/sledgehammers without any further exceptions and achieve Total Self-Sufficiency sorry for the long-ass comment lmao, but maybe that'll help sate the curiosity of anybody who was wondering if there's a less Exception-y way to pass the lv5 gear check. if anybody can find a method that *doesn't* require fudging those 2 grass (or buying 1 hempen thread from another vendor) i'd love to hear it, i scoured the crafting log and wiki but couldn't find a perfect solution. the wiki didn't list any leves or anything that could drop grass or hemp thread but if there is a sneaky one that does somewhere that might be the best shot. desynthesis is unfortunately not an option as it requires reaching lv19 msq

This was all before the stat squish though, and before the change to unrestricted duties, so perhaps it will be different for you. I did a similar run a couple of years back! I had to call quits at Longstop, I recall, and I think some of Titan's mechanics make him impossible to solo. Here's a tip for dungeons though: A lot of the enemies aggro on you based on sound rather than sight so you can simply walk past many of the mobs and you don't have to fight as much, especially if you quietly sneak back from where they aren't looking! I hope to see you continue this run!

Read through the comments and one or two people did get this, but yeah if you start in a different city, you can make Brass Circlet (Lapis Lazuli) with just leveling your combat class (to equip it you need to be level 18), miner (to get materials), and goldsmith (to craft it). These three classes are all in Ul'dah, but you will have to go to North Shroud to get the raw Lapis Lazuli. Alternatively, the Brass Circlet (Malachite) does not require a visit to The Black Shroud, but requires a level 16 miner rather than a level 9 miner.

You can buy lvl28-29 accessory in Uldah from shop near Gladiators guild. Not many people knows that. But it would cost you something, its not cheap(2500 per piece or so, i think). Crafting yourself HQ versions would be cheaper, it would just take time to get GSM and MIN to 30 or so, then its pretty much for free. It gives you like 5 extra attribute points(over NQ base of 2*5), but considering how little you have, its significant boost. If you look for challenge, consider "i wear only what i made" one. No loot, no market board, no npc, just gathered and crafted. That helps you kill some time. :)
