Is Michael Bisping Too Dumb To Be A Commentator For The UFC? Bias? Rambling? Roasting Fighters?

You hit the nail on the head with how Bisping fixates on negative points in the fight, it's never the fighter doing it perfectly it's that the other one isn't doing enough, not being active enough, etc. It's obnoxious af and in some instances his critques aren't even relevant because their winning.

Anyone who talks long enough will have mistakes. Especially live commentary, open ended podcasts, and things like this. I’d take Dom’s commentary over Bisping’s for strategy whereas Bisping has comedic value but I don’t listen to him commentate fights ever. I turn off the volume when I watch fights unless it’s two fighters I don’t know at all and want a little background info

There is a moment during Chris Curtis vs Brendan Allen where Curtis says "thanks Mike Bisping" after Bisping said something. DC mentions it and Bisping then proceeds to cut him off to compliment himself. Then Anik, like he always does, puts the focus back on the fighters.

Actually bisping does a ton of research, he made a binder of everything he finds out about them from any content they've ever made, he'll ask them about those things in the fighter meetings and make notes about their response, what they've working on, and lots of other info. He definitely does his homework on fighters, even the undercard guys.

In terms of ex-fighters he's still one of the more charismatic and media savvy. Not saying much, but probably true, if you really think about a great many other English speaking ex-fighters. He's also not an awful right winger, which definitely helps. He basically never says anything political, so can be trusted to just say silly stuff not career-ending stupid stuff.

I remember his commentary from Strickland vs Hermannson (right before Adesanya vs Whittaker 2 fight). It was a good fight for boxing fans. Strickland stuffs all of Hermannson's takedowns, checks his kicks, lands some brutal elbow checks on Hermannson's punches and pieces him up with an expert jab. Not the most exciting thing for some, but bisping is absolutely roasting the fight for being boring... right before he goes on to drool over Adesanya's own boring performance in the Whittaker rematch. Then the Paddy the Baddy thing. It's the kid's first UFC fight, he gets rocked, not knocked down and the entire fight Bisping is crying about him not fighting in a peakaboo stance... crying about the chin being up "he needs to do x he needs to do y". Paddy gets the first round finish and the right to be excited about it since he called it before his fight, but Bisping dampens the interview saying "yeah? well.. you almost got knocked the f out". Guy is so egotistical, he can't even enjoy a fellow countryman having success and being cocky (like he was when he fought in the UFC)

There is more context to that though if you watch the interview back. Paddy says first "what did I tell you Mike we'll be standing here after a 1st round finish, and look what happened" then Bisping replies with "well I'll tell you what happened, you almost got knocked out" then Paddy is able to drop the iconic scousers don't get knocked out line. Bisping set the line up perfectly for Paddy whether he meant to or not.

Lower weight classes are more skilled on average but they also have a greater margin of error and you can't ignore that. You get punished way worse for making simpler mistakes in higher weight classes because of the power difference.

I remember Bisping rambling about something whilst Arlovski was getting taken down hard by Aspinall. He finally decided to cut it short and acknowledge what Aspinall was doing as Arlovski was tapping. It’s why annik is great, he knows when to start, when to stop, when he can say things (eg when fighters are clearly feeling eachother out etc)

Like, you’ll have top ranked fighters dipping their head and winging punches like it’s worldstar and they won’t really mention it, or like Nunes utter lack of head movement and technique generally, and they’re putting her on PFP lists.

Bisping is only annoying to me when he's commentating for a fellow Brit, because he can't control his bias. I find DC much more annoying because he's always hyping up wrestlers and gets passive aggressive during interviews. Anik and Felder are the best.

Ufc commentary has always been less professional than every other sport. In a lot of traditional sports those commentators literally go to school for it and get training on it, ufc is a bunch of retired fighters, rogan once in a while, and Anik who is the only one who probably has actual training on it. Give us more Laura shes actually good, unbiased has braincells and is very good to look at.

Honestly Laura Sanko is probably the best commentator under the Zuffa banner, but she's mainly does DWCS fights. Before her I really loved Brian Stann and Dan Hardy, but unfortunately Dan was fired and Brian pursued different passions in life. In current day I'd honestly say Felder is #1 for me. Bispings ego has always annoyed me since he was on TUF and it hasn't translated well into his commentating career.

I've no problem with Bisping's commentary, but his Octagon interviewing skills are catastrophic. He's always in a rush to leave the Octagon so he never let the fighters call out their next opponents.

I honestly think the solution is to stop giving any former fighter who wants to commentate the opportunity to. Anik is arguably the best at it because he’s an unbiased, consummate professional and having people who used to do the sport on the desk just brings out this competitive shite and I hate it.
