Best selling truck here in Chile for a while now, very reliable, used a lot as work trucks (most work trucks here in south america are mid-size) but also available in higher trims. Available in part time and full time 4WD systems, both with low range. The 2.4 diesel is enough because the L200 is lighter than the Ranger, Colorado or Hilux. We have left hand drive here too, so not exactly a "conversion". This is already the facelifted version of this generation, sold here since the 90's, I think this should be the 4th or 5th generation already.

The Mitsubishi L200, the Nissan frontier or np300, the Toyota Hilux and Fortuner, the Ford ranger, Chevy Colorado, the Volkswagen Amarok (my favorite), the Mercedes Benz X class, the Isuzu DMAX. Those are the trucks we have in Latin America. Solid small trucks with relatively small turbo diesel engines (i don't think they comply with the US emissions regulations), way more reliable than any American full size truck . Fun to drive, awesome platforms to make off-road and Overland rigs, solid working trucks that have awesome gas mileage compared to the full size ones. I really hope you can start getting this awesome trucks and you can test them!

Feel free to correct me, but I think the name applied by Mitsubishi, and sold in the U.S.A., to their "compact trucks" back in the 1970s was something on the order of "Mighty Mitis". A lot of people purchased those trucks for light duty usage (under half a ton as the trucks were more along the lines of a quarter ton in terms of hauling capacity). Datsun and Toyota produced small, nearly lookalike pickups during the same period that sold every bit as well. I think that first generation small Ford Rangers and Chevy Loves were rebranded versions of Japanese products back then too. I can't recall what Dodge called their little truck, but I do recall they sold pretty well in our part of the Southeast back then. I'm about 99% percent certain that there were "dealer installed" 4X4 "kits" for Chevy Love, Datsun, Toyota mini pickups back then but I don't recall such kits being available for the equivalent Mitsubishi, Ford, or Dodge branded mini trucks. One thing that the majority of those early mini trucks had in common were four and a little later, five speed manual transmissions, but all of them had really solid if underpowered, by today's standards, four-cylinder carbureted engines.

I think it's just there in America for testing. The current model that the rest of the world has was released in 2014 (facelifted in 2019). The truck pictured is Mitsubishi developing the next generation model, but still at the early stages of development. It's a test mule, with new & improved chassis mashed with the old body (you can see the wheels&tires not fit right into the arches for the mules). This is likely still 2-3 years away for global markets. The L200/Triton is more of an Asian/European/Australian-flavored midsized pickup, so I highly doubt it will make it to the U.S. If it will, there has to be significant mechanical changes for the US-spec (just like how the current Ranger was released in the U.S. 7 years after it was introduced in the rest of the world with significant mechanical differences from the global model, or how even the US Chevy Colorado is basically a completely different vehicle compared to the global Colorado), or just make a completely different pickup for the U.S (like Toyota Hilux vs Tacoma, Nissan D23 Navara vs D41 Frontier). If Mitsubishi wants to sell a pickup in the U.S, they should just rebadge a D41 Frontier instead.

I'm from Trinidad, those spy imagines are definitely the current gen l200/Triton/Sportero/Strada. I've been hearing for months now that Mitsubishi been planning on selling the Triton in the USA. This is just further confirmation. Triton is the king of the pickups, much better than the hilux ever was tho the hilux fanboys would never admit it. I have a 2007 Triton 2.5 L and it has been absolutely phenomenal, very strong, reliable, monster off road, can carry over a ton of payload and tows well. Glad that's it will come to the USA but I believe the interior will be vastly different to the current gen because the current interior is a bit cheap and to compete in the USA market thry need to improve. As for the engine, they'll probably put a gas in it and it probably won't be a Mitsubishi designed engine which sucks because it really won't be a full Mitsubishi design. The engine is the heart of the vehicle and without a Mitsubishi engine you won't be able to fully enjoy the vehicle, best that I can explain it.

Crazy that Ford introduced the Maverick shortly after the Ranger. I agree, why would anyone but a Ranger when the Maverick is a better buy and gives you much of what you need in a pickup? Once you outfit a Ranger, the price gets closer to a full size truck. Huge mistake by Ford.

@@alraguc Not really there is still a market for the Ranger for people that need an actual truck and not a compact grocery getter with a pickup box.. The Ranger has more capacity higher towing ratings and is way more capable than the Maverick and gets better fuel mileage than an F150. Once you fully load a Ranger it is still way way cheaper than a full load F-150 Lariat. Which would be the F-150 equivalent to a full load Ranger. They sold the current L200/Triton in the UK and Europe until recently. They have ceased to import them. Indeed they have pulled out of Europe altogether. The last of UK L200 will just about have been sold out by now. It is one of the lightest weight trucks of its size. with a noticeably small profile chassis. It was/is very popular here because it was reasonably priced but although for Europe it has suspension rated to carry over 2200lbs payload, until the last year or two it was not rated to two 7700lbs [3.5 tons] as most others are. In fact during the last couple of years the current version has been uprated to tow 3.5 tons but only with triple axle trailers. No idea why but guess that the braking and weight was inadequate for twin axle over-run trailer brakes. On the plus side it has super-select 4wd which allows use in 4wd high with an open centre diff on paved roads and due to its light weight is just about the only pickup here that can legally carry its full one ton payload at the same time as towing its full trailer mass. It uses the same Aisin Warner auto gearbox as the Isuzu pickup. Both only available in the UK with turbo Diesel engines. Since it has been discontinued in Europe and Australia, and Mitsubishi itself as a car manufacturer has some doubts about its future, it is unlikely that they would start selling it in the US now in my opinion. It is a slightly smaller and lighter rival to the Ford Ranger.

The L200/Triton is also sold in LHD markets, so it still could be testing for the global market. That said, there is a clear and significant market potential for Mitsubishi to introduce a small to mid-size BOF truck. With mid-size trucks getting more expensive, a good value option would be welcomed. Nissan used to fill that value segment with the Frontier, but the new model has really jumped in price. If Mitsubishi could undercut the others by coming in under $25,000, and with good marketing and off-road halo versions, they really could have success here. Also, I've read somewhere that Mitsu is planning a PHEV version of the L200. That would really shake things up. All around, I see a lot potential for them. Hello Andrey and Roman! I work for a Mitsubishi dealer here in the USA selling new Mitsubishis, and I will say this: we'd be ecstatic if Mitsubishi were to sell the Triton in the USA. A Mitsubishi truck in the USA is the #1 request of Mitsubishi dealers. There have been rumblings for years about bringing it here. People in high places at Mitsubishi corporate have eluded to bringing a truck here (a few years ago), but didn't want to rush it. I do know this (from my own speculation), that is 100% a Mitsubishi Triton under that camo. I do also believe Mitsubishi is planning on doing a PHEV in their next gen. Triton. Have you seen the spy photos of the one (presumably) cold weather testing in Sweden? Notice in these photos, the wheelbase is a little longer than the wheel wells? What could this mean? I do believe this signals Mitsubishi bringing a Triton here. As far as I know, they hadn't have ever had this generation Triton on American soil. Why would they bring it here, just for testing? That wouldn't make sense. Mitsubishi_team has also posted photos of the Triton spy photos in America, and I believe that's a somewhat official Instagram account. Anyhow, this is a great pickup, and would immediately compete with the likes of Tacoma and Ranger, and combined with the new Outlander, would really help bring Mitsubishi in America back into the forefront of people's thoughts when they go shopping for a new vehicle. As far as engine, it's very hard to say what will be powering it. I know they're thinking PHEV... Which is usually paired to the 2.4 4 cyl., but who knows. Maybe a new engine entirely? I would personally love to see Nissans 3.5 V6 in it, with maybe another option being PHEV... Speaking of which... Maybe they're using Nissan frame on a Mitsubishi body and maybe that's why it's a slightly longer wheelbase? Entirely speculating there though. I know the chicken tax may be a challenge, so maybe they'll produce it locally? Anyway, hope it happens!!

The L200 is sold in Mexico with a nice Diesel engine, manual or auto transmission and a rear diff locker. It’s actually a very capable medium size truck. It can actually be a very nice alternative for Tacomas or Rangers, specially with some light mods like a mild lift and 33” tires. BTW, the diesel variant gives around 30 mpg and tows around 8000 pounds

Nice! The triton is the #2 selling mid size in Australia I believe behind the Tacoma/Hilux. Solid little truck from what I hear.

Present and sold in central and South America since 30+ years ago. Excellent truck, diesel powered and extremely efficient. Had a 2014 model year, auto, simple and work truck. Competes to Nissan NP300 (Frontier) and Toyota Hilux.

@@kenoday7562 Oh, noes! I'm quite familiar with a vehicle I've owned for fifteen years. Every piece of sheet metal, aside from the roof and back-of-cab panel is unique. Mine has a 9.25 rear axle, which I haven't seen in a Dakota, but I haven't looked under every one I've encountered. Some interior materials are better, and I've never seen a Dakota with a couple of options my Raider has. I cross-shopped both the Raider and the Dakota, and chose the better vehicle. So?

The top thing any auto maker needs to come to the USA is EPA certification. So look for such disguised vehicles around the EPA sites in Ann Arbor Michigan (Plymouth Road). If they are there for testing it is a good bet they are preparing to come.

I used to love Mitsubishi, my first brand new car at 18yo was a Mitsubishi Mirage in 1997 , in 2000 I got a Eclipse GT fully loaded, my dream car from childhood was a 3000gt vr4 that I’ve also owned and still lust over one when I see it for sale, all together I’ve owned 7 Mitsubishi cars including a Brazilian market Montero diesel ( pajero) and the new outlander in my opinion is one of the most beautiful crossovers in the market today, but every dealer I’ve ever dealt with it was a horrible experience not to mention hard to find parts and that, especially the horrible dealer network made me swear I’d never buy another one.

I have a Mitsubishi Outlander. Other than routine maintenance I have not put a cent into it. It now has 130,000 miles on it and it runs like the day I bought it. I would really like to see the Mitsubishi truck.

Yes they are working with Chrysler/Dodge on this truck for years now. If u look closely in the pic of the truck in Florida the wheels were from the Dodge Dakota style wheel. They have been wanting to make a replacement for the Dakota but they were unsure and were also looking into making a smaller truck that was made by Mini Cooper to sell to the people who wanted a small car but with a bed. Hopefully they have scraped the small car like truck and went with this Dakota replacement truck. Mazda, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and other companies have all been working on small and midsize trucks for many years. There has been a Mazda midsize truck overseas selling very well for years now. The market for small to midsize trucks is big and the demand is great. I am very anxious for this to hopefully finally be happening now here in America.

In South Africa and Australia it is called the Triton. The new generation Triton is due in about 2 years. If you compare the chassis length and width with the current model and that prototype, the prototype vehicle is bigger. My guess is that they are testing the chassis for the new model wich will probably be sold in America as well
