I sit down with Miriam Hobbs, deputy head teacher and educational researcher, to understand how the modern world is debilitating young people, stripping us of a skill-set, and ruining our ability to simply enjoy the task.

Wonderful conversation. Just to put another side to it, I have been a brownie leader and now a beaver leader for 15 years and in 3 different areas. The waiting lists for these clubs is huge, the issue is getting parent leaders, volunteers and helpers. Parents want their children to do the clubs and be involved but don't want to, or can't, volunteer their own time.

Yes! Couldn’t agree more about the never ending part of our current lives… I’ve just started to take up crochet to crochet a penguin and I hope one day I’ll get to the end 😂❤

One thing I think is interesting is we might not have as many skills now but the skills we have we have to know WELL. We’re not just competing with the village to be the best at the skill, but the whole world. Part of the reason we’re never satisfied I think! 😅😎

I feel like my make do and mend lifestyle is also inspired with my parents but in the opposite way. It was a lot of overconsumption and wasteful consumption when I was a child especially during the '90s and early 2000s. And it really changed during the recession which was when I graduated high school. And that shift was very dramatic. And now everything I have is either second hand and thrifted or free. And we only buy new things if it's needed.

Same! You can still get quality, well made items without having to pay full price. There is no need to pay retail if you don't have to.

I am 9 minutes into this podcast and it’s already made me rethink my life. As a 22 year old, everything is at the palm of my hand. I just expect to be able to order food, have electricity, have wifi. Perhaps we are ungrateful for what we currently havez

This was an incredible conversation! There is not enough discussion surrounding this important topic. I'm definitely of the same mind as both of you! If only I had the opportunity to discuss this with you ladies over a cuppa tea and delicious cake! Wouldn't that be nice! Would love to hear more from you both! Cheers from Texas, USA! 🤠

This was a fascinating listen! I remember distinctly the day that Instagram switched to an infinite scroll. I really enjoyed visiting Instagram and seeing all the updates from my friends and favorite content creators. When I had seen all the new posts, I would see an end and feel satisfied. Now I get an endless supply of suggested or paid posts and give up on seeing the latest from those users I most value.

Well I never realised I have been living a make do and mend lifestyle for all my 47years 😂 here's me thinking I want to be more like than and I just realised I already am! I bought a vintage 2nd hand singer sewing machine for just £20, it dates from 1914 which I find amazing. It runs so smoothly but was missing the tensioner. I looked on KZbin and found all these amazing people teaching you how to strip them down completely clean them, put them back together and where to apply oil. I found out there is an app which helps you identify them, ordered the part I needed from ebay, and installed it with the help of youtube. This is how I use the internet, I thought that's what everyone did! I look up recipes, anything I want to fix or learn about, I knit and crochet so look for patterns ( sometimes vintage ones) and for help if I get stuck. It is obviously thanks to my dad who could fix anything, I never bought a new anything till I had checked if he could mend it first. My mamma who crocheted, baked and sewed her own clothes and my mum who knitted. I'm glad for my childhood in many ways we were not well off but life was so much better. The internet is fantastically useful but I'm glad I grew up without it.
