Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

In relation to the dual-Pokémon/single-Pokémon episode question, I much prefer single episodes. The Nidoran double header was fine, but the separate videos for Nidoqueen and Nidoking are the way to go.

I think jrose has it right, the nidos were made to be basically identical and it makes sense to directly compare the small details and I think the mid evos could easily share a vid but the final evos are different enough in approach and moveset that they deserve their own videos

The problem with doing them separately is that whichever one goes second has an advantage. I don't think JRose would've taught Blizzard at the end if it wasn't for the Nidoking run for example. Proteins were also a huge mistake with the King as EQ can one shot almost everything it's used for anyways.

@@theapexsurvivor9538 They never retconed it since that would change the number of gen 1 pokemon to 150 and dear god they weren't willing to do that even back in gen 2. What they did do though, is make it so that male and female nidorans can both hatch from eggs by Nidoqueen. Ultimately I wouldn't think too hard about it since the pokedex also catagorizes a caterpiller, it's pupa, and the butterfly that emerges from that pupa as literally being different species.

Poliwhirl: Is faster, learns Amnesia and Hydro Pump Poliwrath: More BST (but sadly a lot of it in Atk and Defense, two less useful stats), has bodyslam from the beginning and not from the S.S. Anne - but doesn't learn any additional TMs because even Poliwhirl learns earthquake and submission. Poliwrath's additional fighting type gives it: additional resistances to bug, dark and rock... when you basically never meet rock and bug type moves and dark type moves don't exist. Not to mention you should be able to wash away any rock type move user anyways. A fighting STAB, a type useful against normal, rock, ice, steel and dark... of which two don't exist yet, one can be dealt with water moves, and ice is solely used by Lorelei, and the fighting type move it can use is submission, which is just horrible. It also gains 3 weaknesses, flying (which is ok aside from champ's pidgeot), fairy (doesn't exist yet) and... oof, Psychic. Ofc you have the usual suspects just softlocking themselves, but otherwise, being weak against the best type in the game always is crippling. Fighting type really simply isn't that good in gen 1, and the things Poliwrath gains seem rather small, and the things it loses seem brutal. Poliwhirl vs. Poliwrath is the one time I am downright sure that the further evo will be worse than the lower one. @@rainpooper7088

I’m curious about lickitung too, it’s actually got slightly better special than attack and it is one of those normal types that inexplicably learns stuff like thunderbolt and fire blast, and it gets earthquake. Stats really do suck though, it’s lower than a lot of midstages including the starters

@MotherBra1n

why? Is it just because of Amensia?
@Gungho73
@Gungho73 Жыл бұрын
@@MotherBra1n The fighting type is a huge disadvantage in competitive gen 1 moveset wise, because fighting is often terrible but also because of Psychic types and those who can use the move psychic often being rediculously good before the special split. The benefit of a fighting type competitively would be against a Chansey or Tauros typically, or types like Rhydon. But the latter already gets smashed by Polwhirls water/ice based moves which are often better when paired with Amnesia. The former two both can learn thunderbolt and Chansey with physic prior to its special split is just a bad matchup. The boost in speed is not enough in gen 1, with crit chance included. to make up for this. Zapdos is also a matchup nightmare. It's less about the statistical difference, and more about what it "loses" by gaining them. In gen 2, there are still arguments to be made that Poliwhirl is in fact better compeititvely. I think "Freezai"? Was a KZbinr with a 2 minute video on the subject in you're interested in that as well. I'm sure Jrose will offer a great discussion on this as well!
@MotherBra1n
@MotherBra1n Жыл бұрын
@@Gungho73 that makes sense, especially competitively where electric, grass, and psychic would be super effective against Poliwrath with it's mediocre special. For a solo run however where the AI is awful, the AI hardly ever use any powerful super effective moves, I wonder if Poliwrath's stats would still make it faster. You see Poliwhirl won't learn Amnesia until level 41. Poliwrath starts with body slam and has a pretty good base attack. The biggest obstacle I see for Poliwrath that Poliwhirl can manage better would be Gyarados as Poliwhirl can badge boost which Poliwrath cannot (or just Amnesia then ice beam) but then Gyarados probably won't be able to do much to Poliwrath either, it has decent defense and should tank a hyper beam then finish it off with Body Slam. Poliwhirls best move until Mt. Moon is water gun (and we saw how big of an issue this was with starmie) until it gets mega punch (a move with less power than body slam and with a worse base attack). And whilst fighting types may be awful competitively they have a huge advantage in a solo run: Good AI makes Lance a complete joke. I mean Poliwhirl would probably sweep lance with a single amnesia but Lorelei's Dewgong could lower it's attack both with growl and aurora beam which might make slowbro, Jynx and Lapras kind of annoying. I could be wrong, I guess we'll wait and see but I feel certain that Poliwrath would outpace Poliwhirl until Poliwhirl learns Amnesia and that might be enough for it to win a solo race.

I think the single combined episode for Nidorans was absolutely appropriate and I think in the spirit of those Pokemon. I also think it made sense at the time given your insane upload schedule then. For middle stage evolutions, I'm really curious how you're going to do them since they are kind of similar to two Pokemon and there's a fair number of them to get through. I also kind of prefer the shorter videos as hour long odyssee's where half the video is the same six battles is fine every now and again, but can be a little much if it's constantly. These short and sharp videos are fun. I also got a real frenetic energy in this video that was so cute to see.

JRose dropped Poliwhirl in the video, which gets a spread of good attacking moves, Hypnosis, Amnesia, and good speed, and a bunch of people are discussing Starmie, but I think people might be sleeping on Slowbro. I suspect its floor is Snorlax-esque at the bottom of the non-Mewtwo tier 1 as a very slow but tanky Pokemon with a good movepool and Amnesia, and it has a variety of reasons to think it'll outperform it, including: - Confusion to get past Brock more quickly - Higher base special - STAB on Water and Psychic - In the medium-fast experience group rather than slow - The potential early pain points of Surge and Erika are pretty effectively mitigated by high defenses, Dig, and Ice Beam. Later issues with Rival's Venusaur are pretty effectively handled by Psychic stab and tanky stats early and Amnesia later. I do not think any of the three mentioned Pokemon will beat Alakazam, but I'd take long odds on Slowbro ending up the highest result and only to make the top 5.

When Jrose is talking about episode length and you see less than half the video length is the Elite Four

I feel like the Magnemite and Voltorb are similar enough to the point it warrants it being a double video, and by similar I mean I know for a fact the Voltorb run will be absolute misery. Nidoran (F) got an unfair advantage by going after its counterpart with the same strategies and I think that even giving Voltorb this won't be enough to save it from the Pidgey tier.

I get why you’d wanna do each Pokémon in their own episode, didn’t mind the Nidoran one but I’m okay with doing the middle-evo Nido’s separately as well :)

"Why didn't you do a double episode?" Because he's doing 30 friggin episodes in one month. Of course he doesn't want to put 2 episodes worth of content into one when his schedule is packed.

One of these days, because Jrose has played the game so many times, we should quiz him about specific trainers and what their pokemon and movesets are and see if he can remember.

While i like these type of videos and would like to see middle evolution runs I also kinda want to see "normal" runs where you start with a basic pokemon and evolve as you go because it's more "realistic" i guess idk, sure you probably can't technically start with a let say bellsprout but at least it's not a lvl 5 victreebel! that's just plain illegal lol, also their moves aren't messed up and you can learn them as you go.
