As a barber my self, both of the cleaniest hairs and best scalps that I ever see was from 2 people that don't shampoo at all. 1 was elderly man with AMAZING white hair, I asked him what his secret, he answered "not shampooing for long long time, for many years now and using brush daily". Second one was a man around 35 years old, same thing, I asked him "did you wash before coming here?", his answer was "nope, and I never use shampoo ". He has fantastic hair! I knew that shampoos are scam, but didn't imagine that so much. Now I'm shampooing only after haircut, I do it myself, so I'm not shampooing for about 2-4 weeks each time. And I use shampoo only to clean easily the cut hair and not to wash the scalp. My hair looks great, healthy scalp, and no smell! So don't be afraid to try. Don't start with one year, just extend each time, start with one week, then 2, 3, after 1 month you can go all in and stop with shampoo for ever.

@@donotreportmebro Hearsay... I'm saying this from first experience. Those who did have greasy, had different life style, for example the greasiest head was of a cook, a guy that works at a kitchen so all the oil stick to his hair, of course some like this must wash, even 3 times with shampoo each day, but every average person will do much better with nothing touching his / her hair accept water. It is hard to grasp because we used to as kids, hear from our parents that "if you don't wash your hair well it will be dirty"... And it stuck . Wash it, every day, but only with water.

I'm going on about 8 months now. My hair has never looked or felt better. No dirt or oil buildup on my hair or scalp. No smell. The perfect amount of sebum coats my hair and it never gets too greasy. I wash with water only like once a week unless I get too dirty at work. All the same for my beard. I also use a bit of argan oil on my hair and beard after showers. Funnily enough, I didn't start doing this because of the trend, I just didn't want to leave my house to get more shampoo. That's when I learned that water works just fine, you just have to work your hands in there for a longer time and be very thorough. It got extremely greasy for the first couple of weeks, but hot water helped thin it out a little bit and then after that period my sebum just naturally balanced itself out.

I wash my hair daily with water only. After the sebum stops overproducing I'll go to every 4th day as I did before. Your hair will be thicker, healthier etc. If there is any itching just massage instead and water wash. Your scalp will thank you. Condition is stripping as is shampoo.

I tried it. It was not a good experience. I mean, I get that people can do this, but I have seen so many scalp issues from not washing or unclogging the pores of the scalp. It is true that the scalp will adapt, and it is true that natural oils are beneficial. I wash my hair usually once every 3 or 4 days. Biology plays a huge part in how long you can go, and often times I feel like it is a pissing contest of who can go longer without washing their hair. Or just using home DIY cocktails. Apple Cider is super, but it can also cause irritation. I have had people come into the shop and, I have literally told them I won't touch their hair because it is disgusting. It smells. They have yeast/bacteria build-up causing dander and all I want to do is get in there with a salicylic acid shampoo and clean the literal blackhead off of their scalp.

My experience: So when I had short hair I did this for about 3 years and hands down the best my hair ever was. There is a stage where you hair becomes really greasy and may smell, but this only lasts a month and after that your hair will balance out. The reason I started shampooing again was because I grew my hair out and unfortunately it did start to smell slightly. In my honest opinion it does seem like a marketing scheme as I imagine the hair care industry is a billion pound industry.

As someone who tried water only. It seems to be the only thing that works for me, but I'm an extreme case. No matter what shampoo I've tried, (even medicated shampoos) there seems to be something in shampoo that I'm allergic to, because even the natural shampoos and sulfate free shampoos leave my head really itchy and my scalp would often bleed in certain spots. I've been water only washing for a while now with apple cider vinegar rinses and my scalp seems to have calmed down a lot. No itching, no bleeding, and hardly any dandruff. I haven't used any shampoo, conditioner or other products in my hair for around 6 months, for the first couple of months, it was really greasy and not fun tbh, it then got a lot better but was really rigid, it would just stay in place when I touched it (I've also been growing my hair out this entire time), it'd feel nice after i'd just had a shower, but then it would vary significantly, I've been working out almost everyday so i showered everyday, I also take my showers cold for multiple reasons, but I know that warm water can dry out skin and hair, How my hair felt and looked varied and in my opinion it was similar to hair my hair acted when i used shampoo and conditioner, slowly things started to get better, I think going to bed with wet hair must've had a part to play, because i felt that my hair was more likely to be overly greasy in the mornings if I went to bed with wet hair. These days my hair feels and looks really good in my opinion, many of my friends have pointed out how nice my hair is, it gets very slightly greasy sometimes, but not very often and when it does it's really minor. My guess is just that my scalp needed a really long time to get used to no products, and I shouldn't go to bed with wet hair because it seems to make my hair greasy when I wake up (I'm aware there are other problems with going to bed with wet hair too). I also recently learned from one of your videos that I shouldn't expose my hair to water daily, so I'm considering changing my workout split and working out twice a week so I don't take as many showers

My point of view: First of all, much people have a misunderstanding: he isn't saying that he *does not* wash his hair; he is saying that he does not *use shampoo* , he still washes it with water. Then I'll just make an hypothesis based on commonsense; we humans are animals, what mostly differentiates us from other species is our ability to reason but biologically, physiologically, we're still animals. Now, how many animals do you know that need to use shampoo? any. Since we are born, our parents wash our hair with shampoo, then we learn to do it ourselves and continue with the habit for years and years. Our body adapts to the environment and external factors that affect it, and here comes this situation with all this clean/beauty products: If you shampoo your hair in a regular basis, you're artificially modifing it's natural conditions; you use some shampoo, say it dries your hair, well now you use a moisturizer product; then your hair is too flat so you use a product to get volume... This is just a made up example. Summarizing: we are animals, all animals' bodys regulate themselves homeostaticly. From the moment we're born, we constantly manipulate the natural processes of our body through chemicals, -no animal on earth has the need of artificial products and this seems *obvious* but then? Why would us, animals, need them? Because we get used to them, because we use them constantly from the very start of our life; we spend a living altering the body's natural regulation so it very quickly becomes an acquired necessity. Sorry for any speaking mistakes, English is my second language.

“salon quality hair products” are really just marketing. It’s no different than expensive skincare. If you go to any drugstore you’ll find a whole aisle of shampoos and conditioners that aren’t just “made for the masses”. That would be like one-size fits all or undifferentiated marketing which just doesn’t happen. I think of “salon-quality hair products” as just products that are in mind to not work against any treatments you get at the salon, or are just safe for chemically treated hair really, but those products exists at affordable prices without breaking the bank.
@wendigo6667
@wendigo6667 Жыл бұрын
It seems like you never used salon products before. It's true that it is more expensive but you also use much less of it because the active ingredients are in a much higher concentration. I've been using the same bottle of shampoo for 4 months and I'm not even half way through it. It's not even one of the large bottles either. With drug store shampoo, I would have used up the whole thing in half that time.

Decided to experiment with it for a bit, first two weeks was hell, itchy scalp and I was having mini dandruff blizzards. After that, it started to calm down but offered almost no benefits. For the next month in a half, I'll have random dandruff break outs, every once in awhile I'd get random itching episodes (sometimes with dandruff, sometimes without), my hair quality was atrocious, my hair which is normally free flowing and shiny when I used shampoo and without it was clumping up and looked dull. Combing my hair was a pain in the ass due to my hair becoming more clingy not only themselves clumping up, but also clinging on to the comb due to the slightly dry oil (makes no sense but I have a lack of a better term here) my hair was now producing. I decided to stop the this experiment when I noticed more and more hair falling out when I just ran water over my head. So yeah, bad results for myself but no regrets since it's a small dumb story I can tell others. If you're going to suggest this method to people, do them a favor; tell them it isn't for everyone and encourage them to do their own research since it's clear people have differing results from this from the comment section alone. Don't be a asshole and push this as a 100% reliable method otherwise you might just end up screwing someone over.

I don’t know for sure but my understanding is that hair does not need ‘moisture’ in the sense of water. It needs protection in the sense of sebum which is not just oils but a waxy component. Swimming in the sea is great not because of the salt but the natural surfactants in sea water. The natural sebum protects your hair from the water but allows the surfactants to remove only the excess sebum. That’s my secret to no poo hair.

I was washing my hair with water every other day, massaging my sculp by finger.my hair was medium size and curly. I might have used a little bit of shampoo 3-4 time in these two years, When I think I need that. Recently I wanted to give curly girls method a try, until now I still prefer my no products hair days .

i did no poo for a few months. my hair had never grown better, felt thicker or more moisturized. the problem was the oils that would build up were too much for my hair despite lasting past the ‘adjustment period’ no poo’ers always talk about. so while my hair was super healthy, it didn’t look good, and that’s what made me come back to the middle with cowashing. i now use a cleansing conditioner to wash my hair and extra oils and protein treatments when needed, but overall just a 3 product routine. the simplicity and health of no poo, but my hair actually has its own shape now and i love how it looks without any styling. best of both worlds 👍🏻

Hi Trav, first , I lovle your videos, I have learnt so much! I didn't watch all of this one tho, but I will say, I stopped using shampoo 4 years ago and my hair has not been healthier! I wash it with chickpea flour 2 or 3 times a month, and use a touch of coconut oil once a week. I go to the gym 3 times a week and I am always on my bike. My hair is subject to wind, sun, dust, but it's really strong, thick, and healthy. I'll admit, the first two months were ugly, but after that it got better. I stopped using shampoos and products because I didn't want to buy all that plastic, and I discovered really healthy hair. thanks again for all the really useful videos you post

I think that the "no shampoo" method works if you have good pressure in your shower, that is, that the same pressure of the water(that really hits) helps to remove the excess oils in the hair and deodorize. It is easier if you have short hair and keep it that way. I've tried it, I let my hair grow and I haven't washed my hair with shampoo in almost a year and the times I wash and dry my hair well, it's not greasy, it "balances itself". I have somewhat curly hair so the knots, yes, it is a problem but there is a solution. But if you don't wash your hair well, "no shampoo" doesn't mean that you don't have to wash it, what's more, I would say that you have to rinse it and dry it well, because if it isn't, the hair gets bad odor due to the humid environment and type of microorganisms that favor these conditions.

I couldn’t tell you what exact type of hair type I have other than it looks similar to the guys hair in the video. Hopefully I continue to have so much success with it.🤞I personally had no problem before when I shampooed my hair like 6 times a week on average other than feeling the need to use wax and/or hair spray from time to time. Now I don’t need any products at all. It just makes so much sense for me and my hair is so much healthier. It’s like Mother Nature had it all figured out from the start, who would of thought it 😂

I started washing less frequently, but gradually, almost two decades ago. I still wash only about once a week, but use a silicones-free conditioner (cowash), or honey water, or a very dilute baking soda solution followed a diluted vinegar solution. Massaging very gently with any of these gets my scalp clean and not irritated. Easy, cheap, and no dry flakes for 20 years. Cool. And my hair looks nice without paying corporations hundreds of dollars 😎

Hey Trav, I just recently started to realize how important it is to take especially good care of my hair. I have long hair that I haven't gotten cut for about a year now. I use shampoo/conditioner about twice a week. I was wondering if I need to cut my hair down short, and kind of "Restart" my hair growth from short hair and make sure I take proper care of it. Or is it ok to simply start applying advice from your channel to my hair right now? I can clarify if what I said sounds confusing, I didn't phrase it very well. Thank you for all the content by the way, truly high quality.

I have long hair but it’s fine. Fine hair benefits more from this method than thick. Fine hair needs help to look good. That said what I have been doing on the advice of a stylist I know, is wash with shampoo only once per week with a water rinse once in between with a blow dry both times. Fine hair can really get a nice texture doing this….By the weekend with some spray wax my hair looks great. I would almost be determined to push washing to every 2 weeks we’ll see. Product matters too. I use high quality Japanese branded Yuko stuff. If your hair is super thick and healthy and naturally silky you don’t need to do as much. I knew a girl with incredible looking super long thick smooth hair and all she used was suave. I’m not sure about just dropping shampoo entirely. That sounds a bit mad.

I personally dont use ANY product on my hair. And well, in my experience everytime ive taken a shower where i wet my hair, my hair has comeout clean and oderless. No one has ever said anything and ive evwn asked my closest friends if they have noticed anything but they didnt. They actually mentioned my hair seeming a slight bit healed... ( i was receading from my temples and losing thinckness ) ...and to my suprise it was thicker and closer to what it was like before! But this is just my experience, all of our scalps operate differently, And what has a play in it too is how dependat your body has become to these certain chemicals, What i mean by that is: You clean your hair weekly or even every other day and your body has a routine of over producing oils for your hair and once you try to stop using shampoo complitely your hair will get even greasier than someone who has used less shampoo and has had a more "healthy" relationship with their hair amd the chemicals they put in there.

I scrub my head with my fingers under the shower head and towel dry my hair vigously after. The result is great hair that stays in place, no static in winter and it doesn't feel greasy when dry. If I get really dirty after some outside physical labor, I will use shampoo but for my personal experience, no shampoo is the way to go. I liked your commentary and perhaps will explore a more gental shampoo for the times where I truly need it. BTW, I have a full head of thick hair and I keep it cut moderately short (longer than Johnny's but much shorter than yours).

But a good Hairstyling product (especially wax) normally has ingredients that are not bad and bee wax protects the hair as well. And a good hair wax should have bee wax

Since shampoo came out people demonized soap non-stop, but they're not that much far off. As someone with thick curly shoulder-length hair + eczema, i personally hate shampoo because it leaves my hair stringy and raggedy. I used soap out of frustration one day and my hair has been shiny and clean for over a week straight, it even healed all the scars the eczema gave me. Just remember to use conditioner right after, because soap (like shampoo) is drying and strips your natural oils so condition to replace the moisture. I doubt i am the only one who uses soap.

The quality of water we use to wash our hair and skin is very important. Most of us live with hard water unfortunately. So using luke warm water almost bordering on cold will be better especially if your shampoo or conditioner has ingredients that could exacerbate irritation when it comes into contact with warm hard water. Dandruff is just dead skin. Combing your hair and less frequent hair washing will help. Our body naturally goes through skin cell turnover. A lot of the products we see are marketing bs.
