Hi Dave. Nice video. Haven't you tried percebes (pollicipes pollicipes goose barnacles)? Definitly my favourite seafood. Your video shows some ordinary portuguese (good) food you can find in most portuguese standard restaurants. It's good for a start. But if you are a food lover and you want to discover portuguese cuisine you must go off the beaten track. I leave here a few suggestions you should try next time: 1- Leitão à Bairrada (Bairrada style roasted suckling pig). You can find this dish in some restaurants all over the country, but nothing compares to that you only can taste right in the original spot - Bairrada (a small town near Coimbra). Once you try it there you will find the others rather dull. Only in Bairrada you can eat it immediately after being roasted in a laurel skewer in a firewood woven, when its golden skin is crispy and delicious and the juicy meat melts in your mouth. You must accompany it with the fresh sparkling wihte wine of the region. I can assure you you'll have a unique experience you would't find anywhere in the world. 2- Cabidela de leitão (suckling pie cabidela) Arroz de cabidela is a traditional recipe you can find all over the northern and central regions of Portugal. It was exported to the far East (Macau) and Brazil when they were portuguese colonies and now it makes part of their national cuisines with local adptations. Normally it is a poultry (mainly roaster)"cabidela" rice. But the "Cabidela à Bairrada" it is made with suckling pig, has no rice, the sauce is much thicker and and has a strong spicy flavour. 3- Cabrito Assado no Forno (roast goatling). It is a traditional Easter recipe, from Beira (central region of Portugal), although you can find it all over the year. The goatling is baked very slowly with shallots and small round potatoes, preferabilly in a traditional black clay tray, in a firewood woven. (Of course, the best is my mummy's...). 4- Arroz de Pato (duck baked rice) 5- Sopa de Cação (dogfish soup): a traditional recipe from Alentejo (south of Portugal) 6- Lagosta Suada à Moda de Peniche (Peniche style steamed lobster), a recipe from the fishermen town Peniche. Try them next time if you can and I bet you will be in love for portuguese flavours.

As a native alentejana, I must say that the migas you mention are most commonly cooked like that in Central Portugal. In the Alentejo, the migas are made with bread, yes, but we simply add a bit of water, garlic, olive oil and/or the juices leftover from cooking the meat (often times in a similar way to the vinha d'alhos used for the carne de porco à alentejana). Then, you have many variations including asparagus and even acorn flour. I recommend you stop by O Cortiço, a restaurant near Montemor-o-Novo (Évora district) to get a good taste! Great video as usual!

Amazing review of several great (dare to say best in the world) Portuguese foods! Thanks Just to add an incredible and tradicional Northern rural food which is "Papas de sarrabulho". This is not soup or main course... it's both! You eat it like soup but it'll fulfil you like the main course. Really have to try that one, great to warm up on the cold northern nights

Two other things for you to try; steak with molho de cerveja (beer sauce), it's usually a thicker sauce than used in the Francesinha but delicious. The other is Sopa da Pedra (stone soup) a really favourite in the countryside. Well done on the pronunciation of Setubal by the way.

Dave have you tried sopa da pedra (“stone soup”) ? :) Leaving its origins story below: Sopa da Pedra is the story of stone soup. In Portugal The story’s lead role is taken up by a monk. This monk travels to the village of Almeirim with a pan and asks people for a donation for the poor. The people ignore him and are not willing to supply, having too much poverty themselves. He than goes to the border of the village and picks up a stone, he fills the pan with water and the cleanly scrubbed, round edged stone. He starts up a fire and puts his ‘soup’ to boil. The villagers pass and they are curious and ask him “what are you making?” He replies ‘stone soup’ so puzzled by his answer, they ask ‘is it good? He replies ‘yes it’s quiet good but it’s missing something. It could do with some potato, so the passing villager doesn’t mind to give some potatoes and he gets them from his field. Another villager passes and asks the same questions, the monk replies, “it’s delicious but to get the real flavour it needs some typically home made Chourico”, this villager also doesn’t mind to go home and get a bit of Chourico. The monk keeps this up the entire night, talking to the villagers and getting them to part with a small part of their produce while the soup cooks steadily and gains more and more ingredients and taste. When the soup is fully filled, ready and tasty, he removes the stone and invites all the villagers to share in this amazing delicacy. The people unanimously claim they’ve never tasted anything better!. Almeirim is the Portuguese origin or ‘home town’ of this delicious and nutritious soup that has many varying and different recipes. Most consist at least of potato and beans in Almeirim it generally comes with three types of meat. Farinheira sausage, pigs ear and Portuguese Chourico.

This guy has been eating a very small sample of what Portuguese food is all about, and no I'm not referring to the video's ranking. In order for him to get an idea, he should check out Maria de Lourdes Modesto's book, Cozinha Tradicional Portuguesa (among others). And in doing so, maybe he'll seek out the plethora of traditional Portuguese cuisine out of the main urban areas where, currently, very seldomly truly traditionally made dishes are to be found.

Cabrito assado, mariscos de fantástica qualidade. etc etc etc...

@@davidc8879it’s interesting that you would directly compare Portugal’s food to Italian food, even though it wasn’t mentioned in the video. It’s as if you had some built in inferiority complex. Whether you like Italian food or Portuguese food better is completely subjective. What’s not debatable is there are way more options on an Italian food menu. if you want to test this theory I will gladly provide you with the options that are available on the most popular Portuguese restaurants and Italian restaurants. Your mind is going to be blown when you realize how many options italian restaurants provide. Whether you like Italian food or not, there is a reason why it is vastly more popular than Portuguese food.

As an Italian, the noticeble things of the portuguese cuisine are the roasted fishes, and the sweets. For example crema de ovo is really something good that I found only in Portugal. All the other dishes are good but not that exceptional to me, and Italian equivalentes, that are unknown to foreigners because you can't even find them in cities restaurants, are better and more diverse. Also I have never eaten a proper good meat in Portugal. Even at the butcher is impossible to find good meat. So on average it's a good cuisine but hardly the best in the world honestly.
