Is Proto Merlin Invincible? Servant Analysis

Sorry this analysis is a little late, I wanted to get these out much sooner but some big changes on the channel have been getting made. Proto Merlin is a very intriguing unit and she's going to open the possibility for comps that some may not realize.

I feel that Proto is literally just Arts Merlin with some caveats to giving her better healing and giving np charge to herself along with the overcharge on her skill being affect now by the cooldowns. I don't really mind the higher NP level = more NP charge, though in hindsight it is clearly the most 'P2P' it has ever been compared to other servants. On her Arts Hero creation, I feel like it should've been adjusted to a 50% CDamage 3 turn or hell even a 60-75% Arts CDamage for 3 turns compared to the 100% CDamage 1 turn we have on her currently as Arts doesn't have an actual crit support like Buster (Quick is literally crit gimmick lol no need to mention) though time will tell as she does have the broken ass Bond CE that Merlin has, but for Arts which is bonkers on them. Overall I think that Proto will not be replacing Merlin, more like theres more options now that its an arts variant of him leading to more team comps similar to how OG is being used. Now I am just patiently waiting for when Tamamo gets buffed because of her dead Morph skill..

I feel the reason why many people still think, me included, that Merlin is slightly better than Proto Merlin in the invincible comp is that the main dmg dealer in this case, either Morgan or Himiko, is Buster based. Merlin can help them push for dmg when the deck lines up and reduce the number of turns, which in turn decrease the possibility that the boss can overpower Caster’s Solemn Defence stacks and outright kill someone

It's not just that, Merlin also has shorter CDs and significantly longer buff duration on his NP so his kit is far better geared for stall. Proto Merlin trades some of the longevity for instant access to her NP. Also another argument for Merlin's case is that Proto Merlin's NP is significantly worse than Garden of Avalon when at lower NP levels, so there's that...

@@Founder_of_Morgans_Fanclub About the NP part, I think the lower cd's for Proto gets offset by the fact that it is max hp up compared to merlins healing, but you can possibly make a case and point for also having lower cd for her NP compared to Merlin's.

Got to try her out with Morgan and Castoria on some hard encounters and had an absolute blast. Don't have Merlin on JP but used him extensively on my NA account (both are NP1) and from what I've seen so far she doesn't seem to be any less competent than he is as a core servant for stall teams. Really pleased with Lady Avalon (and summer Ibuki who's absolutely cracked)

Sakamoto Ryouma (lancer) also has a party-wide overcharge buff on his S1, so you could stagger his and Proto Merlin's skills and be fully protected just like buster.

I got her in a brand new JP account and she has been nice to have for farming. Trying not to use her for story stuff until Babylon, but I'm sure she'll be great from then on.

Feel free to point it to me If I missed the info. but I think it would have been good to mention that Proto NP Charge/turn duration is only 3 turns while OG Merlin's last 5 turns. This means Proto only exceeds OG's total NP charging (5%*5=25%) at NP3+ (8.75%*3=26.25%). To me it makes the power-creep less scandalous as OG still provides more NP gauge until NP3 Proto. Of course, that doesn't change the fact that charge scaling with NP level to be pretty scummy. With that insane third skill of hers, I think Proto is still a bit better than OG even at NP1, but NP2+ widens that gap imo.

Is she better thou? She needs 3 enemies for her skill 3 to be good, and even then it's on 8 turn cooldown. Merlin's 3 turn Critical Down is much better in my opinion. Additionally, to use it as battery you need to pretty much forget about it being useful as defense, while Merlin's Illusion can be kept in reserve if something goes awry with Solemn Defense stacks. As for NP, she gets better charge since NP3, but it should be noted her healing is falling back behind Merlin's with each NP level. On both having NP5 he heals double of her Max HP Up. Personally I find her nad normal Merlin pretty much the same when it comes to power level, each being better in different comps.

It’s pretty nuts that with her charisma + passive 20% start + 2 enemies + mana loading is enough for her to get 100% with no CE whatsoever, you could load her with Prisma Cosmos like OG Merlin enjoys and feel no detriment at times. The longer CD of invuln is offset by the delayed drain saving you from a turn for the next Incoming NP. If we were to cancel out the longer CD critic with the drain, we end up exchanging 20% crit down (which is powerful) for a self 20%-60% battery. The timing of the invuln vs using it for battery purpose is a very fair critic and does make it less appealing. I still think that battery is looking very spicy. There’s going to be points in fights where you do benefit from the battery and invuln simultaneously. She pairs better with Tamamo than Merlin as Merlin was a weird fit for buffing arts dps. Being able to fit Tamamo helps a lot when it comes to cooldowns. There’s even that Overcharge effect on the charisma added which is mighty good with every other prime arts support. Though at the cost of once again one more turn of cd. Even if Merlin heals more, I feel they’re rather equivalent on their “healing” aspect due to Proto’s max HP being wasted less than Merlin overhealing in the void. All in all, I do agree with you that it’s actually hard to give the edge to one or the other. They’re both busted.

I personally think Proto Merlin fits better than normal Merlin in the immortal comp with Castoria and Morgan/Himiko. Losing the Buster buff isn't as much of a problem when the team gets that Overcharge buff and Max HP up and Proto Merlin being able to use NP almost immediately, making their survival better
