Peter Hitchens is spot on with his observations. We live in Battersea and the river foot path that runs up to Battersea Bridge is buzzing with cyclists and e-scooters most of them powered going far too fast. We the pedestrians are terrified by these idiots who are treating the pathway as a road. Also, the Lime cycles that are just tossed aside, a few weeks ago one had blocked the path over Battersea Bridge and another the entrance to Battersea Park. Every morning I take a walk to the Park and back and avoid using the river path preferring the footpath down west bridge road where there are hardly any bikes to contend with.

My Mother was actually bloodied as a girl hunting on her first hunt, where they cut off the tail of the fox and put blood on the newcomer. I mean god almighty! Repellent. Meanwhile the people who shoot on the land nearby raise the pheasants, who become used to humans and don't really want to fly, although the beaters frighten them, and get shot with very little chance of survival. Clay pigen shooting should be enough for this sport i my opinion.. The amount of birds that dont get eaten is shocking and the amount of people who not only cannot shoot well or ride well when hunting is a disgrace. I believe in culling the deer but not by corporate workers out on a bonding jolly but by professionals. Please don't try and push the argument of abbattoirs because that is a different story and after all the demand for meat would not result in people going out to shoot cows and pigs and sheep in great numbers rather than send them to those grim places. What needs to be addressed is the lack of stunning now in abattoirs because of moslem and jewish ideology. Why we allow people who do not share our cultural attitudes to get away with this horror is just another show of cowardice on our part. End of sermon!

Ebikes. Ive been a keen cyclist now for more than 35 years. 23 years ago I had a car crash and damaged my knee, as a result of this and some poor quality surgery, I now have arthritis in this knee and I've lost a lot of muscle - I used to have a disabled badge. In 2017 I had to give up cycling due to the pain it caused. To make matters worse I moved to a house at the top of a big steep hill, all bike rides ended with this agonising climb. A while.after quitting cycling I became quite miserable, missed the excitement of cycling and obviously lost the health benefits, I started to put on weight and my health in general spiraled downwards. Then I got an ebike, I am now able to ride every other day or so without causing too many problems for my knee, I have lost all the weight I put on and my health in general has improved. The positivity that this bike has brought to my life is immeasurable. Saying they dont give you the health benefits of a normal bike is ridiculous, I can easily hit my max heart rate of 185bpm riding my ebike. Another thing I can do is sustain my fat burn heart rate for longer on an ebike as I dont have to use as much effort (high levels of effort damages my delicate knee) to go up hills. According to my sports watch I burn about 20-30% less calories on my ebike compared to a traditional bike - im clearly making some effort! Yes some people ride ebikes irresponsibly, just like some people ride normal bikes irresponsibly, what do we do, ban.all bikes? The issue is the rider, not the type of bike. This comes down to common decency of the rider, how they have been bought up, educated etc. Peter Hitchens just sounds like a grumpy jealous old man here I'm afraid - he admits to never having even tried an ebike for christ sake! Like Peter Hitchen I used to scoff at ebikes saying it isnt real cycling, then I tried one, ebikes changed my life for the better. My commute to work is 38km in a car/motorbike and takes 30-40minutes depending on traffic. On my ebike, going offroad away from traffic and other people it is only 20.5km and takes 45 minutes. To do this on a normal mountain bike takes 1hr 15 minutes. Rural use of ebikes is different to urban use and should be treated differently rather than the blanket ban people like Peter Hitchens want to see. Respect to Peter for still cycling in his 70's mind, I hope I can do that at his age, probably not if he gets his way.

Thank you Spectator TV. I have always found Julie Bindel an infuriating writer whom I agree with on a number of issues, but whose blatant misandry has always irritated me. However, on the evidence of this show and her appearance with Douglas Murray discussing Pride, I'm obviously wrong. She seems like a right laugh 😅! And her cheerful acceptance of misandry as the root of her dislike for sourdough actually made me like her more 😊

If they are legal they are no more dangerous than a traditional cycle, where Hitchens was right is in inforcment of the law, in France the penalty for hacking them is very hefty we need to follow suit

@@Smelly_Minge Then it's either an e motorcycle or it's an e bike that's been hacked and as said that's where the law needs to be applied rather than punish all e bikers or perhaps you think because someone speeds in a car all car drivers should be punished

it is pointless and unhelpful to point at the, admittedly, bizarre causes taken up by younger people nowadays without some attempt to understand what feeds it. we in the UK (and in the US) are a fundamentally conservative in nature but what have the young got to conserve ? The prospect of home ownership, owning a stake in your country and having something to show for hard work, has been greatly diminished as asset ownership has been made ever more attractive for the already rich. If you can see all of your future earnings being drained away into ever higher and more ludicrous rents then you are bound to shun conventional ideas and social norms and find things to rebel against, to differentiate you from your parents attitudes and even provoke those people. Even buying a modest apartment is out of the reach of majority of youngsters - why should they then become our ideals of sensible model citizens ?

What say you now Peter Hitchens, now you know the pain that regular motorists have been subjected to for years, closing smaller roads, low-traffic neighbourhoods, reducing lanes to accommodate bicycles. Which are so "clean" but no mention of the same old chemicals to make things like brakes, components and tires.
@Belfreyite Жыл бұрын
Close more small roads, Introduce more low-traffic neighborhoods! Yes to all of that if only to fly in the face of entitled "regular motorists" How many more kids, dogs, elderly people, etc are you going to kill and maim before you get the message?

The problem with the Henry Manse and Peter Hitchens exchange is that they’re not talking about the same sort of vehicles. Some e-bikes are bicycles with an assistive motor, others are electric motorcycles. Manse is (apparently) championing the former and Hitchens is certainly criticising the latter.

Great show, sourdough bread is great from Aldi, sssh don't tell anyone, if one is on a low carb zero sugar diet for type 2 diabetes the dark rye sourdough is a useful find for me. I do have an ebike but at 79 I'm too frightened to use it around our village due to the narrow roads n speed of traffic, so still on shanks poney and massive 4x4. Lionel Shriver always talks sense and sees the emperor's new clothes for what they are I love her and more like Lionel would encourage me to renew my sun, which I gave up this year

I live in Malaysia and returning to the UK with my Malay wife was our escape route if Malaysia went too Islamic. Now, I am very glad I am not living in the UK. I am concerned that Western Liberal Democracy, in particular the Anglosphere, is far closer to collapse than others suggest. We are being undermined from within by our elites who are hell bent on pushing us into another Dark Ages.

@@skymanifest8339 I am not rootless. I am English. The reason I live here is because I spent 23 years defending you. My last post with the Gurkhas in Brunei and I married a Malay woman and settled here. This is the longest I have lived anywhere because in defending you I moved on average every 18 months. I keep up with UK politics (obviously) and my home is little England. This is why I fully understand why Immigrants to the UK will not assimilate if there are enough people from that culture speaking their language. Indeed I met someone out here who had cut glass English but told me how great Birmingham was because he could conduct his entire life in Urdu.
