One year my grand son regifted a gift he didn't like to me and you could see where he tore it open so I knew it wasn't new I wasn't happy so now instead of a 100 bill he gets 50 dollars.

If a gift is not particularly personal or useful/wanted, it is perfectly acceptable to pass it along to spark joy for someone else. The error comes when one does so within that social circle. Family, work, church, friends, etc. - whichever sector supplied the gift, you must only regift to a different one which has no member overlap.

I think it is a crime to hoard stuff you are never going to use.
@ErykaSoleil
@ErykaSoleil 5 жыл бұрын
Kira Ward : One of the most awful aspects of true hoarding is that you *do* think you're going to use it, or that there is a real possibility that you might need it one day (and that if you do get rid of it, you will immediately need it). As someone who's got a bit of family history with it, let me say that hoarding is a very distressing complex for the person experiencing it, and anyone who thinks that it's just laziness or selfishness should really read up on the psychology involved. It can be absolutely debilitating, and it's usuallynot really something the person can control on their own without professional help involved.

@@ErykaSoleil I agree. However for those of us that don't have a hoarding disorder, go through your things once a year and as much as someone important gave it to you, unless it's a family heirloom, it's up for a garage sale, Goodwill, reselling on eBay, or regifting. Just my opinion.

ErykaSoleil well, my grandma was satan herself, so yes, without any compunction I regifted or threw out everything she ever gave me until I was old enough just not to talk to that family anymore.

But the thing I love most about Grandma's gifts, are the fact they are perfect for regifting. And I suspect that sister who says she use her foot spa every day, she lies. And one more question: If I can't regift a certain item, can I donate it to charity?

You know you can't get the same thing for all the grandkids. She's innocent and was totally regifting correctly. The other option was donating the unwanted gift. Still makes you feel guilty though. Love this video! Had the regifting debate at work recently.

I would always have to remember to dig out all of my Grandma's gifts when she would visit. She bought me a couch cover once. It was velvet. I had to find it every time she was coming over. So ugly but I had to make sure she saw that I just loved it. And the decorative hand towels in the bathroom. The Amish quilt...

Rule of thumb: Once a gift is given you can't dictate to the recipient what to do with it. Otherwise it is not considered a gift.

One of the problems with consumerism: too much crap that nobody wants. Regift away. Or tell people you don't want anything, if they can't or don't bother to figure out what you might actually like. And stick with useful gifts or food that doesn't add to the pile of useless stuff.
