Rocky also said in 4 that it had been nine years since they got married, which was true in real life too. 2 takes place immediately after 1, which dropped in 1976, and 4 dropped in '85. Robert was born in 2, so he should be 9 at the oldest in 5.
@MM3ScubaSteveUSN3 ай бұрын
Agreed; definitely doesn't make sense, if Rocky V is STILL supposed to be 1985, when it was released in '90. They could've fixed THAT, as well as changed up Rocky's 'fall from grace', where Paulie signs a power of attorney, causing the family to lose EVERYTHING. Also, the Tommy Gunn plot could have been better; have Tommy lose his first title defense after winning the belt from Cain under 'King Duke', then eventually come to his senses and go back under Rocky's wing, for example. Unfortunately, the street fight near the end was about the best part of the film. Lame overall, but AT LEAST Tommy Gunn and Union Cain were portrayed by REAL professional boxers.

I will be honest ... Rocky 5 holds a special place in my heart. I think it is the weakest movie in the Rocky series and I don't like how they handled some things. With that said, I was in a major depression when this movie came out. Mickey's speech, the Rocky theme and Rocky saying "I didn't hear no bell" really helped me to start a journey out of how I felt. I still quote to myself "I didn't hear no bell" when I face a major challenge and need to psyche myself up. While I recognize the weaknesses of the movie, I am grateful to the movie for what it did for me.

The first five minutes, following the recap of Rocky IV, that are very good. The moment when Rocky sits in the locker room and cannot stop his hands from trembling is very moving. It's been a long time since we've seen any sort of humanistic vulnerability in the character. From 3 to 4 he has been a wrecking machine who seemed to show little effects from the brutal pummeling he absorbed over 15 rounds. It's actually the one flaw in the entire series---his fighting method of just allowing his opponent to batter him without offering much in ways of a defense to ward off the blows. But I digress. When he is with Adrian in the locker room and he cannot understand the serious brain damage he most likely sustained in the fight with Drago I was hoping that the film might go off into a more serious direction and away from the cartoon silliness of the last two. But when they return to America he seems all better. But there has always been this inconsistency in the character where his intelligence varies when it best suits the story. Once Tommy Gun is introduced it becomes very predictable and we're just counting the minutes until that big fight between him and Rocky happens. There's no drama because we know Rocky will win. This is what made the first film so unique and I never felt cheated that he didn't win that fight with Apollo Creed. From the sequel onward it followed a pattern and never deviated from it, less it anger the fans who came to expect this outcome. Even if there was some setback you know he'd win in the end. It got tiresome after a while.

I actually don't think Rocky V is that bad a movie. It's not as good as 3 and 4, but it's faster paced than the first 2 Rocky movies. Whilst I don't think it's quite the 0/10 that Sylvester Stalone claims it is, it still isn't good. The biggest problem I have was that it was just way too dour and depressing in tone. If you watched all the Rocky movies in a row, it's clear that it works as a trilogy, and falls apart after that. Even little details like the intro titles are the same in the first 3 movies and the story and character continuity between the first three holds up very well. By Rocky 3 analysts are skeptical that Rocky could come out of retirement to rematch Clubber Lang, and he manages to skate by for the win. Thus making Rocky 4 all the more ridiculous that he's going up against this mega fighter in his prime, and somehow wins. Don't get me wrong, I truly enjoy Rocky 4, but it does require you to suspend a lot of disbelief and relies heavily on montage after montage to keep you entertained. I bring all this up, because Rocky 4 paved the way for Rocky 5 to being the stink bomb that it is. With 4 using up everything we could believe possible, the only place for 5 to go was down. Part of me whishes they would have ended at 3, but I recognize 4 is basically just a dessert to the main meal. So 5 would be the cold leftovers that you really shouldn't be eating because you are already full. (By this analogy, Balboa would be leftovers reheated the next day, which aren't bad, but are nothing to write home about. And the Creed series is a new meal using a similar recipe. Time will tell if Creed remains sustainable into and beyond it's third film).

Stallone plays a parody of Rocky. Brain trauma does not make you act like that. LOL! This story also has more plot holes than swiss cheese. Paulie can not assign Power of Attorney to a lawyer. He has no authority to any of that while Adrian and Rocky are alive. And even if we were to accept that as plausible, the excuse for getting that document signed does not match up with the events of Rocky IV, because Adrian was never onboard for Rocky to fight Drago and stayed behind! All of this was done to cheaply reset the environment that Rocky was in when Avildsen originally directed the first film. It doesn't work because it was not sincere in it's motives to advance the character. This was all done to appease the return of its novelty director. Its really a terrible film and turned Stallone's career upside down when the industry saw he was no longer serious regarding his last prized franchise after Rambo III underperformed.

I dislike all the sequels to Rocky, because unlike most movies, even blockbusters, that get a sequel, Rocky is in many people's top 5 for best films ever made. It was art AND popular. And the story was specifically about it does not matter if he won, because he turned around his life and found love. The sequels not only are not art and are bad, but kind of undermined the entire point of the great first movie. The sequels turned it into a product and a paycheck for the stars. Yay training montage! Yay fight scene against some "unbeatable guy"! The first film was not about that.

i sifted through the comments and cant believe all the love "rocky balboa" gets for "redeeming" rocky 5. this is to everyone who cares. rocky 1 is among the best movies ever made. rocky 2 is satisfying to see him become champ but isnt it predictable from start to finish? of course adriane would want him to quit, of course his commercial career wont go well, of course the smear campaign of creed will get him into the ring, and (cinematically not irl) of course rocky wins. so rocky 2 is overrated imo. rocky 3, fairly obviously is the "typically 80s cheesiest" of the franchise. entertaining for sure, but overrated. rocky 4 is great and loved by all rocky fans, but not nearly the masterpiece rocky 1 was. rocky 5 is about average in the franchise, which is a good movie indeed. not as good as rocky 1,4, or creed 2, but as good as any other in my opinion. i dont understand even a little why its hated. rocky balboa took adriane from us, and it is loved presumably for the speech he gives his son about "keep moving forward". my god what in the world is so wonderful about rocky balboa compared to rocky 5?? creed 2 is better than creed 1, and better than rocky balboa. and competitive with any of the rest. it seems to simply be fashionable to bash rocky 5. people like having others agree with them in echo chambers. any proper analysis of rocky 5 must come to the conclusion that its middle of the pack (3rd-6th best) in the franchise. surely not 8th, let alone "distant 8th" as so many claim. rocky 5 is a good movie, and a good conclusion to rocky 4.
