This has become my Friday morning commute routine, thanks for posting so early. I appreciate you guys tackling such hard hitting questions, so much nuance and wisdom. One question I have been wrestling with for quite some time is whether or not people should ever consider eating their family pets? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this issue. So, James Cameron is a super interesting filmmaker. He is one of the most patient out there in that he will wait decades if need be to perfect the technology he requires for his projects. He did this with Avatar and the sequels yes, but he did this with other movies too. The Abyss was his first run at filming underwater, and he had to invent new tech to do that and some of the special effects which led to the liquid metal T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Cameron had waited over a decade to bring the liquid metal Terminator to life (he had wanted to do it in The Terminator originally but the technology and the funds weren’t there) and he finally got to it. But yeah, James Cameron has a pretty amazing filmography. Avatar and Titanic have both been highest grossing films (though Avengers: Endgame briefly beat Avatar before Avatar’s re-release), Terminator 2 is the greatest action movie of all time (not up for debate, I host the only active Terminator podcast haha), made the best Alien sequel in Aliens, and his other movies such as The Terminator, The Abyss, True Lies, etc. are all pretty great too. Also, Cameron stopped working on the Terminator franchise after T2, so none of the sequels post-Judgment Day are his with the exception of the most recent Terminator: Dark Fate which he produced (sadly, it’s not that great). That said, while I’m interesting in Avatar: The Way of Water, I’m with Andy. There’s no way this film succeeds. Cameron himself stated that it needs to make $2 billion just to make a profit on the film due to the high budget and production expenses. People don’t love the original Avatar enough to make that happen. I could be wrong, but given the poor marketing, the lackluster characters from the original, and the lack of nostalgia surrounding the Avatar franchise, I just don’t see it happening.
