In this video, I talk about how Springtrap from the FNaF series replicates so many of the slasher genre's best villains, including Ghostface, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and many others!

The mystery tied to Springtrap's initial appearance is what made me intrigued with the character. Things have certainly gone in weird directions for him afterwards, but I'll never forget those secret screens from FNAF 3 and the closing minigame cutscene showcasing his origin.

i’ve thought this for years, his” i always come back” line reminds me of the increasingly insane ways other slasher villains get revived. Freddy won’t stay dead, Jason won’t stay dead, Mike Myers won’t stay dead, William Afton won’t stay dead.

William also has things in common wirh Jigsaw: Both are inventors specializing in machines, but more specifically, springlock suits are similar to some of Kramers inventions, most obviously the reverse bear trap, and Afton also made other contraptioks that could be compared to saw death traps such as the Funtimes and the Scooper. Billy is similar to the Fredbear plush Both are intelligent men who use their own buildings for their killings and have lots of industrial and mechanical resources, including underground conplexes in said buildings that they use to put people through tests (Jigsaws games, and Aftons experiments including fnaf 4), and store many of their death traps. Both have an animal association (Jigsaw has a fixation on pigs) Both take on apprentices, most notably a woman they had previously tormented in some way.

Vanny also has a lot in common with Amanda Young from the Saw movies (spoilers for those ahead) Both were essentially victims manipulated into serving for infamous criminals, who were either dying (like John Kramer) or already mostly dead (like Afton). You could even go as far as to say that Vanny has a bit in common with Mark Hoffman as they both work in positions of power (which might be a bit of a stretch) and continue on the work of the original killers after they have passed.

Springtrap is my fave as well. And he could easily fit with the rest of the horror/slasher characters. His origin and design are top tier, and his backstory is dark enough; he'd fit quite well. I hope and pray that the movie doesn't end up being too goofy and actually shows us what Springtrap/William is capable of doing; and how dark FNaF can be. Is William going to kill someone on screen in a gruesome way? Hell no, If someone gets killed in the movie, it's going to be more implied than shown; because of the 13 rating, but I hope they show him actually doing something, and not just "standing there menacingly." I just hope they don't make a joke out of him nor be "wasted potential." I never noticed how similar William and Chucky were, it's surprising lol. Love this analysis!

In terms of Burntrap, I also find him to be pretty similar to Chop Top from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 as well, being that they are both characters that wear the corpse of a previous killer around their bodies while inherenting their entire personality. Also Chucky is pretty much the ORIGIN of Afton's "I always come back" line. He straight up says it in Bride of Chucky.

I like to believe that William Afton modified his suit to work like a power armor, making him stronger and more resilient. In the film (Which was pretty good btw) he tackled Mike like a professional football player and shrugged off tasers. All of these pros likely being weighed down by slower and limited movement…And the possibility of springlock failure.

it's cool to see how different ideas are spinned into a different take. and the fact that the xenomorph and springtrap have that much in common is very cursed. on the note of "burntrap not being afton", I feel like that while it is true now, it feel 100% intended that burntrap and glitchtrap where afton back when security breach release. that it change is read to me like a conscious effort to retcon because of the backlash (which is a very common occurence for fnaf). in the end, it don't matter: burn trap and glitchtrap are the mimic now, until they are changed again based on the whim of scott and/or steelwool. it's fun to see how they try to make those change believable at least. sometime they really make something compelling with those change.

I've always noted similarities between Springtrap and Vecna from Stranger Things. I feel like the horror elements and backstory of Vecna in season four of Stranger Things are very similar to Springtrap/William Afton. Both worked with children and eventually murdered them in the past, using the trust they got as a weapon against them, both make notes about how their child victims are still "with them," Vecna says his victims are still with him in his head, and William Afton makes similar comments in TSE, saying that his victims are like a family and that he's "one of them." Additionally both Vecna and William were killed by people they harmed, (Eleven and the five kids respectively) and both went on to suffer as a result; Both inevitably use this to their advantage and use it as a means to continue living/killing. Their appearances also both stand out to me, Vecna is a really disfigured/mutilated/and burned corpse similar to William. Might also be worth noting that they both seem to taunt their victims with fear in a way, although like you said it's a bit speculative on William's part. I've also kinda related Springtrap to The Mummy story quite a bit, both are reanimated killers obsessed with the idea and goal of resurrection and immortality through their own means, but this one is less similar in story. (obviously without the romance in Springtraps case lmao)

You could make the argument that characters like the mimic and glitchtrap are also a weird nod to Chucky. I'm referring to the cult of Chucky, where Chucky places his soul within many more Chucky dolls making him a weirder yet more powerful force than he ever was. This would fit what we speculate the mimic and glitchtrap to be. Parts of Afton's soul/objects that take inspiration from Afton going out and continuing his work whilst (seemingly) also multiplying their numbers by creating killers like vanny. Affectively giving Afton an army and being a weird yet more powerful force to be reckoned with just like Chucky. This might sound like a stretch but that's how I've seen it for a good while.

I'd also connect Albert Wesker (The original), with William Afton as a character, given that they both experimented on ways to keep themselves alive/ enhance themselves so they can keep on killing. William experimented with Remnant, which led to his demise and rebirth, enhancing himself with the springlock suit. Wesker experimented with virology, and several of the viruses in the resident evil games and movies, and enhanced himself that way. Wesker's not a slasher, but he, like William, is a villainous mastermind. Another thing they both have in common is that they will both do whatever it takes to achieve their end goals, no matter who they have to eliminate or whoever stands in their way.

Afton is interesting because he has all the makings of a slasher villain, but doesn't actually have much going for him during the point where he crosses that threshold. He is at his core, like most slasher villains, a personification of a societal fear or concern sweeping the nation for the time. It's easy to say he's just "Child endangerment" as a whole, but he is very specifically a case of what could happen if you trust the well-being of your children to a corporate entity; That entity doesn't want your children safe simply to see them safe. They want the children safe because they want you to give them money. Afton Robotics and Fazbear Entertainment are the extreme of that; They only care about your children because they want your money _and the child_ He's the FIGUREHEAD of one of the companies involved. He made the animatronics for his own selfish gain. He's literally THE guy who made Afton Robotics, who helped make Fazbear Entertainment what it is, and he's the one personally responsible for killing the children. And thus, as Springtrap, he becomes what he's always been; A husk of a man wearing the tainted facade of a child-friendly character. But he co-opted it. As he does many things over the course of the series, and as many slashers tend to do. He takes the pain and makes it his signature. Like the villain of Child's Play, he just stops being William Afton, child murderer. He is Springtrap, the everliving man. The problem, however, is that by targeting almost exclusively children, the only real strengths he has going for him is what he can muster of his mind through the agony of what he's enduring, and whatever strength the springlock suit gives him. Good enough if he wants to track down children, but against an adult, he's constantly, CONSTANTLY on his toes. And so, after becoming Springtrap, he rarely, if ever, gets a chance to bloody his hands... which i've actually noticed seems to be a hallmark of more independent, low-budget films. a killer will have an enormous history, and pose a great threat, but have a small on-screen body count because, well, you don't have many actors to work with and the suit was probably the most expensive thing. All the fear is in what he HAS done and CAN do, rather than what he IS doing. So in the end, intentional or not, he does actually represent a particular genre of slasher; A cerebral kind that's born of necessity and able to sustain a shortform piece... but not particularly stable enough to build a franchise off of that alone.

My favorite part of springtrap is the way fnaf 3 works. Like he’s *always* coming, and the most you can do is slow him down. He may be the only lethal threat in the game, but the amount of options he has to get to you makes up for it.

I kind wish that in a possible FNAF movie sequel that Vanny appears as a surprise killer. I hope that Vanessa in good movie is good but like in the games is slowly corrupted in one of the future movies. I personally love SiFi horror, when it's done correctly. I would make it where Afton geniusness is unknown. If I was making the movie I would have it where Springtrap in the suit cannot physically talk (after being springlocked), but can use radios around him to speak. The reason why Springtrap was so terrifying in the games was because you did not know what he was, what he was capable of, where he is, and what his next move is. Idk, I'm just a huge FNAF fan that happens to like horror movies and to play horrifying games.

@@rad1165 Yeah. My current theories are that either: 1) Stitchlinegames is canon, UCN is explained by _The Man in Room 1280,_ and William eventually becomes a giant robot bunny made of trash before exploding. OR 2) William is still alive, and is physically Burntrap. The Mimic epilogues in _Tales_ end without the Mimic turning into Burntrap, and when it appears in _Ruin_ it has very little in common with Burntrap, physically. At the same time, the corpse inside Burntrap is in physically better condition than the corpse inside Scraptrap, and Remnant heals, so presumably there's still some soul-goo in it, slowly regenerating William's toasted remains. However, the Mimic is still the one in control in the Burntrap fight. William's mind is still trapped in UCN, leaving him in a vegetative state, while his mechanical parts were infected with Mimic01 by Vanny, as she assumed Glitchtrap _was_ William and thought she was reuniting his mind with his body. Hence why Burntrap adopts the Mimic's physical mannerisms, despite them not sharing any traits except the left hand. The Mimic was controlling the Burntrap body and Afton's remains with it.

I noticed that while William shares similarities with the original Chucky, Mimic seems to resemble Chucky from the 2019 reboot. Both Mimic and Reboot Chucky were initially harmless AI that were mistreated by disgruntled employees of their company, turning them into the violent monsters they are now, and they can control or mess with electronic appliances to help with their brutal murders, and are particularly attached to a certain kid (David and Andy).

Not a movie connection, and i doubt it was on purpose but Dio from JoJo's has a ton of connection to William. Both reject their humanity at some point, both strive for immortality, enjoy major fanfare and theatrics in their killing, see themselves as higher than others, have familial connections to the protagonists, are so cocky that it is their downfall, love to pose (William in the novel trilogy), leave many ramifications after their death and a person to carry out their will after they die. They alsi both have a lot of children, and some of them following him while some not.

I hope we get the aspect of William we didn't see. As in him active when alive. I see Springbonnie being predatory. Playing with his prey. He gets a sick delight out of luring them in before the blade comes out. Similar to Pennywise. (I picture the 'pop pop pop' scene from the remake) He can be active and lumbering but also feel unearthly. Later he can die in the springlock incident and later we get Springtrap proper. Rotten and decayed. Then I think he'll be more like his game counterpart. If we get FNAF 2 as a prequel would be great yo see him in his prime. How he goes about his initial killings. The idea of a child targeting killer is vile. It's twisted as he targets the most vulnerable. And it's amazing to watch. Super excited to see our man brought to life (also Steve Raglin is surely a cover name. I'm willing to bet)

So I guess Vanny could be considered a copycat killer, like in Scream, but in FNAF, Vanny is doing it against her will, but in Scream, the copycat killers are CHOOSING to do this.
