How does the sugar in fruit compare to the sugar in processed foods like soda or cookies?
Everyone loves a sweet treat, but on average, Americans eat nearly 66 pounds of added sugar per person per year. It's easy to exceed the daily recommended sugar intake when a 12 oz soda has about 11 teaspoons of added sugar. But what about the sugar in fruit? Should people be worried about how much fruit they're eating? Dr. Kimber Stanhope, a Nutritional biologist at UC Davis, walks us through the science.

Okay so there's less sugar in fruit and fruit has other qualities.. as we all know.. but the title leads me to think you were going to say why the sugar in fruit is different to the sugar in "soda". Just the sugar aspect alone. Since the title was "Is Sugar in Fruit Different Than Sugar in Soda?".

The sugar in fruit is different than the sugar in soda, for all intents and purposes. Fruit sugar is lower on the glycemic index and has a MUCH lower glyemic load. Meaning it produces less insulin in your body. Increased insulin increases fat storage in the body. High amounts of glucose can also increase chances of developing type 2 diabetes This is also in conjunction with how much more nutritional values fruit has: cancer preventing antioxidants, huge source of daily fiber, and vitamins. Soda obviously have absolutely none of that

@@leftyfourguns I am by no means an expert, but from what I read, it's not that it produces less insulin in your body. The difference is that sugar from a chocolate bar or something makes your body produce a lot more insulin at one time. Sugar from fruit is absorbed by your body at a slower rate and so your body produces insulin over time.

If you processed the fruit you would be correct, but whole fruit does not work the same in your body. Pectin/fiber is the essential carbohydrate that helps protect the body from unwanted insulin spikes.

James M [If you processed the fruit] Do you consider freshly squeezed orange juice processed? [Pectin/fiber is the essential carbohydrate that helps protect the body from unwanted insulin spikes.] Not really. More a case of you can't each 5 or 6 oranges used to make a big glass of freshly squeezed OJ. Eat a papaya, same sugar, same BG spike, same insulin spike. Eat a banana, same spikes.
@Square60

Yes, I would consider fresh squeezed juice processed. Not overeating is the name of the game. Due to highly processed foods people have become addicted to foods and over eat. Papaya and banana are not the sole caue of diabetes, therefore if I am seeing a diabetic patient, my concern is not how much papaya or banana they are eating, it is usually other foods (processed foods). Pre- industrial rev there was fruit (although less hybridized) but the diabetes prevalence was drastically low if any. Point being that whole fruit is not bad, it should not be the focus of nutrition therapy, unless someone is overeating it, which is unlikely. Focus on processed foods, high fat foods and animal products before telling someon to limit banana or papaya.

James M Okay. No argument with anything you have said about most people. [it should not be the focus of nutrition therapy, unless someone is overeating it, which is unlikely.] Who's talking about nutrition therapy? I'm focused on the science of sugar which is what this video is supposed to be about based on the title. This is actually very likely for many vegans -- especially raw vegans. There are many teenage girls juicing tremendous amounts of citrus fruits in the belief that it is healthy. They might as well be having 7-11 Big Gulps for breakfast. My objection with this video is that it is factual incorrect about sugar. Glucose and fructose is metabolized exactly the same way in the body regardless of where it is coming from. Fiber merely locks it in a little longer. Pectin doesn't protect you from a food processor. [Focus on processed foods, high fat foods and animal products before telling someon to limit banana or papaya.] I'm on a LCHF diet with plenty of healthy fats and animal products. My health has never been better as indicated by my blood lipids and BG control as a diabetic. The demonization of animal fat is why people are fat and obese. If you are a medical professional, you need to look at the science and not just your professional association guidelines.

sooooo is the sugar in fruit different than the sugar in soda? Or is it chemically the same?
@groenpaardje
@groenpaardje 9 жыл бұрын
On the molecular level they differ a little bit. Sugar filled beverages have mostly sucrose in them, which is a disaccharide (two bonded sugar molecules) and fruit mostly has fructose, which is a monosaccharide (single molecule). The problem arises because sugar filled beverages only consist of mostly empty calories and do not have any fiber or any helpful micro nutrients. Generally (unless you're an athlete) your body does not need (and is not capable of) storing a whole bunch of sugar (glycogen in liver and muscles) so when the limit is reached it just converts the left over to body fats.
@trotskyite1
@trotskyite1 9 жыл бұрын
SeanJean187 "The ratios of fructose and glucose are pretty much the same in both fruit and table sugar. Most fruits are 40 to 55 percent fructose (there's some variation: 65 percent in apples and pears; 20 percent in cranberries), and table sugar (aka sucrose) is 50/50. Neither type of sugar is better or worse for you, but your body processes them differently. Fructose breaks down in your liver and doesn’t provoke an insulin response. Glucose starts to break down in the stomach and requires the release of insulin into the bloodstream to be metabolized completely." There is growing evidence that fructose from added sugar is a major driver of metabolic syndrome/fatty liver via excess consumption usually in the form of sodas and processed foods.

This, I'm worried about my apple and orange consumption now because apparently they ARE the same sugar as in soda... just with some more fiber and vitamins and stuff. But when you're eating 5 apples and 3-4 oranges a day I'm not sure if that's very healthy anyway lol

Why not producing fruit juices that can last longer. So we can forget about sodas.
@Jembii

I think soda is cheaper to make than fruit juice, so businesses go for what is more economically viable. There are also thinks like preservatives and other artificial chemicals to make things look nicer and last longer. Not really sure Water has the least stuff though!

Abdullah your body needs the fiber in the fruit. Fruit juice also have too much fructose and you need to avoid. Only one way the get fruit in your body and that is to eat it. Companies also add allot of added sugar and chemicals to keep the juice from going rotten. these chemicals and sugars is the items that make us sick and over weight
