In recent years, anyone who has been informed about nutrition issues through the internet will have noticed that many experts talk persistently about the issue of sugar. They emphasize again and again that sugar is to blame for the obesity epidemic in the Western world. This came as a reaction to the hysteria of the 70's where everyone was screaming in the same way that it's all fat, all fat, which is obviously wrong. And on top of that, it led to an oversupply of junk food that instead of being high in fat, was high in sugar. This, to some extent, has led to the obesity epidemic we are currently experiencing in the western world. In the 1970s in the western world, people who suffered from obesity were around 5%, while today in most countries of the western world it reaches 40%. It is certain that the replacement of fat in processed foods with sugar is to blame for this. But that's not all.
Anyway, in my practice I am often consulted by people who have increased weight and tell me that they do not consume sugar. Obesity and increased weight are the result of poor nutrition. It's not just a result of sugar consumption. Most people can consume sugar in small amounts without any problems and in this video I want to tell you why I believe that.
First, I want to show you a table that shows the sugar consumption per kilogram per inhabitant in various European countries, and next to it the percentage of overweight and obese people in that country. If sugar were the only, or at least the main, cause of people becoming overweight and obese, then we would expect a correlation to exist. On the contrary, we see that this is not the case. For example, Portugal which consumes less than half as much sugar as Belgium has more overweight and obese people. Or in Norway where sugar consumption is 26.6 kg per inhabitant per year shows an overweight and obese rate of 50%, which is the same as the Netherlands which consumes 13 kg more sugar. In fact, it is striking that Estonia, the country with the least sugar consumption in the European Union, has one of the highest rates of overweight and obese people.
Beyond that, we also know that the people who consume perhaps the most sugar in the world also happen to be among the people who are metabolically healthier than the rest of us. In particular, according to studies, the famous Kenyan marathon runners consume 20% of their energy needs from sugar and I don't think you doubt that they have the best metabolism in the world! To give you an idea of what 20% of their energy needs means, it's estimated that these people get almost 200 grams of granulated sugar like the one sold in the supermarket a day! Like taking a kilo packet of sugar and finishing it yourself in 5 days!
I don't want to leave the impression from this video that I don't believe that sugar is a major cause of the obesity epidemic in the West, but also around the world. I just want you to realize that eating right isn't just about cutting out sugar. Proper nutrition is something special for everyone and must be adapted to their needs. In order for someone to follow a proper diet, it is not enough just to cut out sugar. He must eat properly according to his needs. Which are different for everyone. In my practice I can help you find your own needs and achieve the ideal weight for your health.
