You know what? Being in my 50's I wish this would have been known or at least discussed more when I was growing up. It was common for us to burn, tan and soak up the sun. It was called looking and being healthy. Everyone wanted a good tan and went to crazy measures to get one. Looking back I cringe at some of the things I did. I'm thankful I started taking care of my skin in my 30's and feel it may have reversed some of the damage I'd otherwise have at this point. All your younger viewers (well all of us) are so blessed to have someone like you to EDUCATE them on this. It's so important and I wish this was told to me sooner in life. Thanks for all you do!! XO

Thank you for sharing! Yes I can relate. I grew up in Australia and even though we were taught to ‘slip, slop, slap’ from a young age, it was still considered “weird” to cover up and wear sunscreen on a daily basis. The only time I wore sunscreen was at the beach. I am now in my 30s and suffer from lots of pigment on my face, neck and chest. I would regularly sun bake and went out of my way to get tanned. I now use aggressive sun protection measures and no longer care what others think. I am teaching my children about the importance of caring for your skin. Hopefully it will help them in their adult years. Overall I would say most Australians do not either know or care about accumulative sun damage. Most people from what I see sun bathe and a burn/tan is is considered healthy.

Ha - I am in my 50’s and this is the best thing my mother did for me! Unfortunately I have sons (I mean, it’s not unfortunate that I have sons, but) and when they were little I slathered them with sunscreen but you know, now they are “men” and especially one of them burns easily and hates to wear sunscreen. Or a helmet when he rides a bike. What can I do? I raised him right but he is now an adult.

@@nicoledburns82 How do you make 28, 24, and 20 year olds do anything? All I could do was teach them stuff when they were little. The older and younger one usually wear sunscreen, and the funny part is that they really don’t burn (dark olive skin). Only the middle child burns like me and “forgets.”

@@nicoledburns82 I’m in my 50’s, and spent most of my teen years (and well into my 20’s) purposely getting a tan (more like burn -> tan). I quit doing that when I had my first child at age 30, because I would be more careful while outside with my child(ren), for their skin’s sake. At age 40 I noticed more “freckles” (sun damage), and started wearing sunscreen and/or a hat. Nevertheless, my skin doesn’t look like wrinkly leather! So it’s not automatic doom! It does take more effort to spend time outdoors when you have to apply sunscreen effectively, but I care more now and have always had our kids put sunscreen on before spending time outside in summer -and now, encourage it for every day on the face, neck and hands. You only have so much control once they become “adults”😅

As someone who is suffering from extreme vitamin D deficiency, it is not *easier* to fix vitamin D deficiency. Obviously it is so much better than fixing cancer. But still... I suffer from morning stiffness, pins and needles, joint pain, pain all over my body, pain during my periods, crazy hairfall, extreme mood swings and what not🥲 It took me months to diagnose what is causing me pain and now I'm eating my meds everyday. It's a lot better but I still have my stiffness and mild pain. Vitamin D is very very essential to the point where prolonged deficiency can cause fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, hormonal diseases like thyroid etc etc. Don't take vitamin D lightly!!!

This was so educational and interesting! I've been wearing sunscreen my entire life and I'm a lot older than you. And I've never been vitamin D deficient. People don't factor in the plethora of medications that can deplete vitamin D in the body, even OTC medications like long-term use of heartburn medications. I knew someone who had breast cancer and would sit on the beach out in the hot sun tanning and drinking an alcoholic beverage (both huge no-no's!). Unfortunately, she passed away. Anyway, thank you for covering this topic. I'm so sick of hearing people say we shouldn't wear sunscreen because it leads to vitamin D deficiency. I get the sense that these people want to both be tanned and not be bothered to keep applying sunscreen .....and don't want to feel guilty about it. "It's like putting vitamin D in cigarettes". Excellent analogy! Oh, well....their loss. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I'm saving this video ♥

It would be highly helpful if the whole scaremongering of sunlight actually concentrate on the AMOUNT of sun exposure which leads to UNCORRECTED DNA mutations as people do not realize that DNA mutations happen every second in their body in every organ and every tissue - and it is normal, and is cause by being alive. All those mutations are being taken care of by our own body’s defense systems ( and there are several). So this constant scaring the public to the point that some think that is they walk 3 minutes from the parking lot to their work without a sunscreen, they are getting skin damage and cancer, and that is actually absolutely not true. The amount of UVA and UVB exposure to actually cause irreversible damage, is extremely high , at certain day time at certain situations. But the push by pharmaceutical companies to bathe you in a sunscreen 24/7 hides that information from the uneducated consumer. You do not need sunscreen if you are not going to be outside in direct sun for a longer period of time ( beach, hiking, biking and other outside activities). Just going to work and back home and even going to your garden for watering the plants ( which you never do in a 2 pm sun) is not the situation when you need a sunscreen. And no, it does not matter if you use actives or not, that amount of time you are exposed to the sun is not going to cause any damage. Putting sunscreen inside the house is totally laughable, when one actually looks into the amount of uV exposure one can get at inside the house, even with windows facing east or south.

@@nomisrennarb2150 what I said is totally true. Those UVA are scattered 25 cm after the window, did you even know that? They NEVER reach you, even in the driver's seat and if you put a protective film over the windows even less will get through

Thank you for this video! I personally really love spending time outdoors and I am happy to get sun whenever I can. I live in central europe so the sun is almost never that extreme which helps, but I just love the warm feeling of good air outside plus the sun shining down on you. Without that I am sure I would be less happy and energetic overall. Which is exactly why its so important to me to protect my skin. I started wearing sunscreen in summer a few years ago and have now switched to using it daily no matter the weather thanks to channels like yours convincing me of how important it is! I am looking forward to seeing less sun damage when I am older and i‘m happy to protect my skin :) 🎉

I've been super deficient in vitamin D for years, live in Florida, and just started wearing sunscreen. My body just doesn't process it properly, so I have to take a super high weekly supplement prescribed by my doctor. So like Dr. Dray said, it's more complicated than getting sun. PS check your vitamin D levels lol

Yep, like where I live vit D supplements are recommended for literally everyone cause we get very little sun, when during the summer someone asks me how am I gonna get my vit d if I ise so much sunscreen I answer "the same as the rest of the year" lol.

Yes! Supplements don't work for everyone and many don't tolerate supplements. Some people just don't absorb vitamin D3 like they should and they them it's a lose/lose situation. I ended up purchasing a Sperti vitamin D3 lamp. You just expose yourself to 5 minutes on each side in every other day. I stated sleeping like a baby a week later. I wondered why my insomnia was so bad in the winter and pretty good i the summer. Our summers are short in WA. I believe these lamps will be the wave of the future.

I started cycling a couple years ago in CA. Its hot in the summer so i wore short sleeve with alot of sunscreen. After that summer of riding my arms were so dark and damaged from the sun. I did several treatments of intense pulse light and now if i go out for a walk i just wear a long sleeve. So it goes to say that just applying sunscreen alone you are still going to get the damage from the sun. Cover up gals.

What we need, I think, is a high UVA-blocking sunscreen (for daily use, not holidays) rather than focusing on the SPF, No point in slathering on UVB absorbers (esp. reactive organic sunscreens) when that's not even the main issue and is in fact beneficial in healthy doses. (unless you want to stay in the sun longer and need to avoid burning). That way we can control the UVB amount we get (like for fair people just get

Very confusing: yesterday I heard Professor Susan Lanham-New in a webinar about vitamin d saying that sunscreen use definitely gets in the way of absorbing vit d in the skin and that it's important to get daily skin exposure without spf in spring and summer for ten tot fifteen minutes a day.

My dad died of skin cancer at age 55. I wear spf+++ whatever highest spf I can find and I wear spf clothing. I get some criticism about it from other people because you HAVE to have sunlight, according to them. I get my vitamins through food. Everyone should. I was actually watching this video because I’m curious how I can up my vitamin D1, 2, & 3 intake as a mostly raw vegan. I’m a little low on iron according to my last blood test. My RBC was 4.06 and my HGB was 11.60. I’m 44. I’ve had anemia throughout my teens. Had a couple blood transfusions in my early 20’s. The doctor hasn’t mentioned anything to me about this recently. I read it on my test results yesterday when I had an unexpected call from my doctor office setting up a time for telephone call. Should I worry? Is that low? Other than that, everything is normal for me. I have had a high epi cell count, but next to those results, it says “few.” I also have low glucose level. 69. I must’ve been hungry when they took my blood. So I’m exploring ways through diet to help myself raise those things. I figured, “why not find out if sunlight would do me any good?!” Thanks for your video and information. 🖤

I live in Michigan .... the long gloomy winters here definitely cause a lack of Vitamin D. And then when the sun graces us for a few months and we wear spf... well.. you get the picture! Many years ago a fellow hockey mom, whose husband is an oncologist, asked me (when I had a cold virus) if I took Vitamin D. I did not. She recommended I start. She explained that her husband gave her (and assume the family) mega Vitamin D injections every so-many months (I can’t recall that part). I took that as a “good tip” coming from an oncologist. It actually perturbs me that we weren’t being told about taking D for antioxidant and [possible] anti cancer reasons. Long story short .... once I began taking D daily I contracted way fewer viruses over the last 15+ years. There is also info regarding severity of Covid illness sometimes being related to low levels of D. I’m glad you are bringing some light to this issue! Thanks.

Its a big problem here in Australia - most adults work indoors & follow the Australian "Slip" on a shirt, "Slop" on sunscreen and "Slap" on a hat campaign thats been run by the anti Cancer Councils since my childhood in the 70s. We also get more UV exposure due to the hole in the ozone layer over our eastern coast. It's essential to wear sunblock 365 days a year & take Vit D supplements here.
