The 2013 Mitsubishi Pajero (Diesel) is Ksh.2,000,000 cheaper compared to the 2013 Toyota Prado KDJ150 ( Diesel)..but is the bargain worth it?

Roadwise, the pajero is peak, itz 3200cc meaning more cc than the j150, its diesel turbo works quite well and the models between 2010 and 2013 have no impeccable issues, if well maintained then the car shouldn't be a bother. Uphill, a pajero is more powerful than the prado and dont forget prados have a loose chasis. Like with the pajero, you can maneuver corners at 100km+ with no fear but with a prado its the opposite, that car swings alot. I mean with the tx, you get it for 5 million and get 2700cc, where a lexus rx 270 of even 350 can do you justice. Like the models of prado below 3000cc are all weak and don't have the torque, and you can confirm this by having a drag race with a pajero. The 3000cc 1kd prado is better because the seats ate comfortable but stability it isnt the best, so to me the pajero is a big bargain

the 4m41 engine is great. the only pain is replacing a faulty diesel pump fails..it is very costly. Other engine stuff are pretty normal and durable just like the J150. remember the pajero is 12 time Dakar rally winner of course due to its reliability and capability.

Toyota is NOT durable. 3.0 D4D has problems with cracking pistons ! I had old 4.2td and i was thinking about new J120 or J150.. but i discovered it has problems with pistons, and sometimes with injectors too. The only option for me is Pajero.

I wouldn't say the Prado engine is more reliable than the Pajero. The 3.2 DiD is pretty much bullet proof and I couldn't say that in confidence about the D4D engine on the Prado which smashes injectors and pistons shattering the motor. Only the V6 petrol Prado is bullet proof. I feel like Toyota is riding on to their name and reputation now as pretty much every other manufacturer has caught up with reliability. I would trust the Kia Sorento more than the new diesel engines from Toyota with constant DPF issues.

True, i don't dispute the Toyota reputation. I once bought a Mitsubishi L200, and at the same market there was also a Toyota Hilux of the same year, mileage and spec. The price was double. For that L200 twincab price range there were older Hilux's, no leather seats, no air con, no tinted glasses etc. So it comes down to choice and use. I needed transportation as i was visiting Africa every 4 months at that time. And that meant travelling distances. Not forgetting i grew up in rural mountainous Zimbabwe- Eastern Highlands, and the majority of our cars were mazda B1600(not even 4WD) and Nissan PG720.

The Pajero is more stable and handles better on higher speeds and power delivery is awesome for the petrol variants. The Independent suspension and the locking center on these further solidify that argument but personally, for hardcore offroad purposes, I don't prefer independent suspension. The Pajero beats the Prado in many aspects, however mistibishi failed in marketing its products and thought the Darka rally and WRC pedigrees would actually work for it, which didn't work out...... Otherwise i would go with a pajero, its 4WD super select system is by far better than what the Prado presents, space, engine wise name it (oh and the 2000-2005 model was the first in many aspects, unibody system, extension on the body near the rear tyres, something that the prado just adopted in 2006)..... if only they could have marketed it well like the Toyota Prado and VX did with the UN guys, then we would be seeing this iconic SUV in the far future, sad that it will no longer be produced......

Interesting show. It's my first time here and will make a point to follow. I think the torque figure were short of the actual output. The other thing is I would not recommend anyone to buy either of the two vehicles with a diesel engine. Reason being is that they won't lasy long without giving you guys headache. The quality of diesel fuel in the local market does not suit the engines and will definitely destroy the fuel system within a short time of owning it. Its not that the cars are wrong, there's just poor quality of fuel in the market. Secondly thesd are workhorses to be used to their full potential hence why they are owned by contractors and farmers the most. People who cover high mileages on a weekly basis and have to go through rough terrain. So if you're going to buy such cars for school run and shopping, they will definitely give you problems. Just buy a V6 petrol instead. If not, be ready to thrush it on the highway every fortnight to clear the engine. If you are running it on genuine diesel fuel not diluted ones.

@@dipsy405 I would not recommend it. Its like saying the engineers at these companies were not smart enough. I would never buy a vehicle that has been remapped. Just a personal opinion cause if things go wrong your chances of reverting the changes might be very costly and at times impossible. Just a personal opinion. The diesel fuel system is manufactured by outside contractors not the vehicle manufacturer. Bosch, continental, delphi... Are all outsiders that offer these service. They design the whole fuel system and test them to meet the required legal limits accepted for road use. I don't know whether the after market remap industry can compare in terms of capability and capacity. Best advise is buy what suits your needs and pocket. If you want a fast car buy a fast car. If you want to go off roading get a 4wd car and if you want fuel efficiency get a small car...

Well Prado is a Toyota what's the need of buying a car that won't last . The land cruiser Prado will last forever giving you Also good four wheel drive experience....the Pajero also doesn't have a rear diff this reducing it's capability off-road but look at the Prado it's tiptop 👌👌👌👌

I used to think pajero was a bad bargain until I experienced using it. Yes pajeros haven't had the best engines but I'd choose pajero anytime

i seriously beg to differ, if you must buy a diesel suv, the ford everest is the best choice in our market, however id personally always choose a petrol suv because what you save on a diesel engine in regards to fuel, you more than pay for in service since diesel engines require service more frequently than petrol engines, my take on it all, unless you constantly do long distances and you tow alot, always go for a petrol if you must have an suv.

In my experience, Diesels last longer without issues ... And they consume alot less fuel, even if you forget to turn off you car and leave it idling, the fuel barely moves. And Diesel with Turbo feel as quick as petrol.

@@wayando i agree with you in regards to consumption, however with respect diesels are work engines and they have a life span, meaning at a certain point they are designed to reach the end of their circle and to be replaced, petrol engines last longer, are easier to work on and easier to maintain, they require much less service and are designed to last much longer, for example, have you ever seen any classic car that is a diesel? but you see many petrol ones still running. diesel engines have more parts that require to be worked on or replaced if not they can go bad, the egr valves, dpf filter, glow plugs, fuel filters, btw they are even more sensitive to fuel than petrol engine. all in all im talking from my own experience, iv owned both a petrol and diesel toyota vx 100 series and i got rid of the diesel due to those issues. my experience could be different from yours. anyway thanks for your point of view.

@@johnjoel8204 ... Since Diesels are work engines how you mentioned, they would likely he designed to take much more strain. Now imagine using it for regular things. It would barely be feeling anything ... Plus when it comes time to resell it, business people would want it - and they are alot easier to sell to. Also, by design Diesels are built stronger because of the high compression during the burning of diesel fuel. Given similar treatment am betting that diesel outlasts petrol. Heavier metal, stronger engine components .... And they run at lower RPM.

I currently have the same body Pajero but with a petrol 3.8 V6 and trust me petrol is the way to go. The 4m41 is noisy and with our poor Diesel quality maintenance will be costly in the long run plus when the EGR clogs up more $$ while the petrol is soo quet and smooth and quick

@@wayando consider high performance vehicles, they are designed to be driven hard, work under certain temps, that way you get the best performance out of that engine, the same applies to the diesel engines, they are designed to work under certain conditions, for example, the dpf only works under certain temps, if not it starts to clog because its not burning the exhaust efficiently, the same applies with other components. and like i said earlier, diesel engines are more sensitive to fuel quality, given our market we dont get the best and as for life span, they work up to a certain point then they need to be replaced, all in all im speaking from my own personal experience and i know my opinion may be different from other peoples opinion. anyways. thanks for the chat.

Prado is overrated. Lacks independent suspension on the rare wheels this explains it's instability. If you can't afford an L200 buy a Pajero

To me wokabi, toyota has highly been over rated, the biggest problem with this specific Prados' is stability and the high cost of maintainace, the price tag is way to expensive, which i don't see the value of it having that price tag.to me,i prefer a pajero,an oldee isuzu trooper big horn,a patrol or the 1993 range rover house SE which is my dream car to date.so for the toyota,it has never been even a dream car or wish to see it on my packing space.

The Pajero is a better SUV hands down against the Prado. Reliability is relative for the two. Performance and Safety in Pajero outmatched the Prado. Prado beats it in popularity and Pajero is more value for money.

For 2m difference, I'd get the pajero and another car. I dont think the Prado is 2m 'better'. Suffer less depreciation and satiate Thatcher in the house as well.
