I agree mine has been pretty good use mine as a daily. These cars get a very bad rep. I did alot of preventive maintenance and few things that failed were expensive BUT when your a mechanic like myself its SO worth it! Even a decent diyer that's willing to learn and have another car as a back up your good.

@danny_r27

How’s the reliability been? Assuming you have the smg transmission, how has it been? The E60 M5 is my attainable dream car but reliability issues is what scare me away. The E92 M3 isn’t as bad and easier to find in a manual transmission than the M5 but the DCT in the M3 is just smoother and faster. I’m having a hard time choosing which will be my next car, a space gray metallic E92 M3 or a E60 M5. Both great cars but one is more reliable after the rod bearing issue has been addressed as they do share that same issue.
@richwvu
@richwvu 3 жыл бұрын
@@danny_r27 It is an SMG car, and the car has had some issues, but nothing I would consider catastrophic. Slave cylinder and starter motor went out between 75k and 80k miles, both required trans removal to replace. The the SMG computer fried itself and took my clutch and flywheel with it at about 97k miles. Honestly the biggest issue I've had is finding a competent mechanic to handle some of the repairs that I'm not willing to tackle in my driveway.

@RichWVU Cool! Take care of it, it’s a car many enthusiasts really love! I personally love the F10 and the latest F90, but this gets more love than all of them combined. Hope it doesn’t eat your wallet, cause I’ve heard that it is very expensive to maintain.
@danny_r27
@danny_r27 3 жыл бұрын
RichWVU luckily I have a garage that specializes in only German cars. They did a transmission fluid change on my 2011 N52 E90 because I wasn’t confident enough to do the fill it up properly. It takes 2 people to be able to fill up all 9 liters of fluid. If not done properly it could result in premature transmission wear and eventually failure. So I decided to let them do it. So I do have a competent shop that’s 3 miles away. If I do find a E60 M5 in space gray metallic that passes a mechanics inspection then I’ll go for it. But the E92 M3 still has it beat in my mind just because it’s a DCT if I can only find in that transmission and unable to find a manual. But the M3 can’t beat the sound of that V10. But I do hope I can find a manual, experts say if you can find a manual E60 M5 then it’s a no brainer. Sucks that most of it’s problems come from the smg transmission. Then the F10 M5 and F12 M6 have been catching my eye but they’re out of my budget lol

nice to see another long term user! I've had my e60 for 12 years 150K miles on it still running strong - it's actual my main daily. Replaced SMG at 75K, did actuators at 125k, just did ignition coils last month - So far I would say its not that different than other expensive cars I've owned for out of warranty maintenance. The only recent thing has been AC compressor got a puncture so that will be the next thing but in terms of engine its been rocking and most issue were repaired under my 100k warranty period.... but ymmv
@groupb5420
@groupb5420 3 жыл бұрын
3 years of ownership with no major issues , I had the throttle actuators changed when I first bought it as these are going to fail if you purchase one of these ( preventive maintenance) the only problem so far was oil cooler under the bumper that was leaking ( £300 fitted genuine part ) and an oil seal in the rear diff ( included with the oil cooler replacement around £30 ) that’s it ... PS: don’t believe the forum scaremongers as most have never owned one or even driven one and the ones that have slated this car didn’t know how to drive this car and didn’t have it serviced properly... the most important thing to remember when owning this car is warm the engine and gearbox to temperature before thrashing the engine the revs must be kept below 3k until warmed up plus let the gearbox cool when the throttle is floored in other words the M button doesn’t need to be pressed 24/7 😉 this prolongs the life of the gearbox and clutch , another point to make is when this car needs to be worked on mechanically etc it must go to someone that knows what their doing not dodgy Dave’s back street garage for a favour , basically if a warning light comes on it needs to be addressed ASAP ....all in all it’s a fantastic car that’s very reliable if it’s looked after and driven properly , it’s the only car I’ve ever owned alongside the E46 M3 that I look forward to getting in on a Sunday morning and just driving for hours on end it’s that good ..... these cars are a bargain atm if you have been thinking of buying one do it now as there is a lot of good ones with FBMW service history and lowish mileage it won’t be long before these cars start going up in price 😎👍🇬🇧

Best M5 ever made. The only people who disagree are those who a) never owned one b) can't afford to own one or c) bought a lemon 😅 I genuinely prefer driving it over my M5 Competition and M4 Competition including the gearbox. Full carbon intakes and plenum + modified exhaust in S6 shift setting going through the gears over 8K RPM each time is one of the greatest things ever for a true petrolhead. I share my experiences on Instagram via @blackbmwlife including having the world's first all carbon fibre plenum from Eventuri. An absolutely amazing car but I will not lie if you don't have deep pockets avoid it. Want reliability? Get a Toyota...it's an F1 derived V10 that revs past 8K what do you expect??

It's so weird, I never thought I would get all nostalgic about 2005 and yet... here I am! We had no idea just how good we had it back then with all these fantastic exotic engines on offer from so many different manufacturers. This was arguably the final decade where car makers could make the engines they WANTED to make rather than being forced to make smaller capacity heavily turbocharged engines like they do now. Sure these modern turbo cars are quick but in terms of character and sound, not even close.

I have entitled Mercedes-Benz W124 the best car of the last century. Why ? Because it´s super reliable, nice car to drive, well equipped for it´s time, there is still plenty of those available and on the road, and it´s very affordable nowadays, you can get really good one for 3000€, it´s cheap to run, insure and keep on the road. + Mercedes still offers services and spares for those. And if you look after it, that engine will not go wrong. It´s really a car for the people.

Andrew Ball you kind of lost your credibility when mentioning the navigation screen and rust. Who the hell uses the navigation in a 20 year old car? And how does that affect the driving experience? And rust dude? Really? You live in the wrong place to take your rear wheel drive sports sedan out in the snow. Every car will rust where they salt the roads. I never hurt my wrist shifting from 1st to 2nd, so I think that’s a you thing. And the only reason they Use recirculating ball is that they couldn’t fit a rack and pinion system in with the nearly 5 liter V8. They could in smaller engine e39s. Car was kickass at the time and considered by many driving enthusiasts and journalists, to be the best BMW ever. It’s why one with shit ton of miles commands $25k right now.
@Barfly76
@Barfly76 3 жыл бұрын
Andrew Ball I think you lost credibility because I don’t believe any serious driving enthusiast would entertain 20 year old navigation technology as part of the equation for a great car. And rust is simply a part of your environment and choosing when to drive the car. Never heard any of the many owners I know mention this as a thing with their cars. And they live all over the world. Has nothing to do with the driving experience either. Seems silly to me. And I know more people than I can count who have owned these cars for years, and you’re the first person to mention wrenching their wrist. You’d think I’d have heard of that before if it’s a true issues and not isolated to your particular driving style.
